Highlands is a great team no doubt. But in a prior thread we foreseen this. If Highlands would have won everybody from there would be on top of the world but if they lost the excuse was gonna be they should have blah blah. From what I am reading it's simple don't make excuses make improvements. Highlands finally met a team just as good as them well in this case maybe a little better.
Most of the Highlands fans I know never make lame excuses.

I am not a Highlands fan, but for the size of the School they might me the best in the land.

Guru,

Well, I think your statement implied that all OH schools intentionally program a "soft" OOS schedule. I think the two schools mentioned above (Moe and X) are not properly susceptible to that criticism. They have scheduled some tough OOS competition. But, I acknowledge that if the standard for a non-soft OOS schedule is calendaring games with teams that are likely to beat you, X especially would have a hard time meeting that standard, because there are not many teams in a given year that are likely to beat them. And if you judge the intentional "softness" at the time the games are scheduled (usually a year or two in advance), it would be nigh impossible for Cincy X (and a handful of other national "powers") to meet the standard, because they would need a very reliable crystal ball to identify the (maybe) half dozen teams in the country likely to beat them two years hence.

Then what is your rationale for Elder having played Trinity?

There are some teams at the top of the Ohio food chain that are forced to take some chances on out of state teams because they really struggle to fill up their schedule. But I will add this, if Trinity beat all the Ohio schools 4 out of 5 years or more eventually the Ohio schools would drop them.

And I don't know that it is so much the Ohio schools are looking for a soft opponent but rather a solid opponent that they are a pretty solid favorite against. So when it comes to teams from Ohio the same size as Highlands it makes almost no sense for them to schedule Highlands whereas the GCL schools figure to beat Highlands every year and if Highlands beats them chances are they are going to struggle in the Ohio D1 playoffs.

Finally, most big time Ohio schools can afford to take a chance on one team from out of state that looks like a potential loss but that is it.

Like most things, scheduling is not cut and dry when you are talking Harbin points.

Plenty of smaller schools from Ohio have been beaten by KY schools in the past couple years. Not buying the Ohio schools only schedule KY schools they know they can beat.

Highlands would fit squarely in the middle of DIII with roughly 300 male students in top three grades (252 to 350 is Ohio DIII designation) To put both a local and statewide benchmark out there, Turpin is #2 in state ranking and Cincy Northwest HS is number 5 statewide. Both went into tonight undefeated.

Don't expect that you will see either of those teams looking to come to Ft.Thomas anytime soon.

I think the OHSAA takes 9th, 10th and 11th grade enrollment to determine class. I do not know Highlands enrollment numbers but the OHSAA website has Highlands as a D-II if they were in Ohio.

Highlands Class 4A standing is based on 419 boys in 4 grades average over 2 years. They have around 320 boys in 9 thu 11 based on Ohio ranking. They would fall in DIII Ohio. I believe Elder has 714 boys in the three grades.

Highlands competition is scarce aroundthe NKY area. Why don't they at least move up to 5A where the competition would be better for them?

Just FYI - KY School Ranking for class

6A - 1,453 to 705

5A - 695 to 525

4A - 524 to 419

3A - 417 to 331

2A - 330 to 200

1A - 199 to 65

Largest NKY school is Simon Kenton 792 boys and them Boone County 790 boys - Ryle lists 770 and Campbell Co. at 746

To my understanding a school is allowed to move up one classification to compete if they would like.

Only if approved by the KHSAA.

I would imagine if Highlands presented a well enough case, they could move up for competition if they wanted it. But there's nothing wrong with winning state titles regardless of class.

Only if approved by the KHSAA.

Are you sure about that Clyde? HHS used to be in 5A because they could play up but then the KHSAA changed the rules (I think) so they are stuck in 4A now. I might be wrong - am I missing something? I think HHS would be in 5A right now if they were allowed to be.

Imagine how much fun it would be last year and this year if HHS was in 5A. HHS and Bowling Green could settle it on the field!

NONE of the GCL teams can be accused of scheduling soft. These teams will play anybody they can. They are a lot like Trinity and HHS in that they have a hard time getting other local teams to play them. X has played (or will play) Elder, Lasalle, Mo, Trinity, Cleveland St. Eds, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Indy Cathedral (I think), Pickerington, and Louisville St. X. It is a murderers row of teams. They have lost 3 games this year and all three teams are undefeated (not sure if they beat St I's today). If they lost, then the four teams that have beat them are ALL UNDEFEATED this late in the season.

Elder and Mo play schedules just as tough. They have almost no breathers in their schedules. The worst team Elder has played this year is Winton Woods. That team would be top 3 team in Northern Kentucky.

I am as big a HHS fan as there is. However, I have complete respect for the GCL schools. For anybody to imply any of the GCL schools schedule soft is just unbelievable.
