Elder (OH) 38 Highlands 24

Listen to the GURU! Quit drinking the Blue Kool Aid and realize these GCL schools should beat Highlands. The fact that you actually gave them a game is Awesome. No one expected it to be this close. To believe that you are something you are not, and can compete on a regular basis with GCL schools is absurd. The pure number of boys enrolled in school is enough to dictate who should win on a regular basis. The other fact is Elder plays Moeller, St. X, etc.....on a weekly basis. Highlands plays Pendleton, Harrison, Mason, no fault of their own, on a weekly basis. One/two big games a year, Cov. Cath, and I will throw in Boyle/Elder/or whatever Cincy team is scheduled. I am sure Highlands was stoked to play Elder, where Elder, although fully prepared, was not as stoked to play Highlands. This was Highlands mini-state championship! To Elder it was just another tough game! I'm sure they did not take Highlands lightly, but I promise you they were not as fired up to play Highlands as they were to play Moeller/St. X/St. I's/Indy Cathedral/Indy Ben Davis/Trinity/etc........... Just be proud of your team and realize Ohio football overall is a few steps ahead of Kentucky football. Whether it is pure numbers, which I believe it is, or talent, which comes with greater numbers! Highlands would be a 500 team if they played the schedule Elder played. Sorry about the reality check.

4A - 524 to 419

3A - 417 to 331

1A - 199 to 65

Largest NKY school is Simon Kenton 792 boys and them Boone County 790 boys - Ryle lists 770 and Campbell Co. at 746

This would explain alot of things on this Blog. LOL

The Birds have more than held there own against the best of GCL competiton. They beat Elder last year and Cincinnati St. X. a couple of years ago. Year in, year out Highlands could compete with the best of the GCL. They might not go undefeated, but they would get more than their fair share of W's.

To my understanding a school is allowed to move up one classification to compete if they would like.

Not anymore....

It is not "if they would like". A school can move up in classification if they are geographically challenged. A few years ago when Highlands was in 5 A , that was because they were rated as a 3A team and at that time Cov. Cath. was rated a 4A team. There were very few teams within reasonable traveling distance for either of those teams. They both petitioned the KHSAA to move up a class which was accepted which then made up Cov. Cath., Highlands, Dixie, and Scott in that district.

I think Dale does a great job at scheduling. Not an easy thing to do. Everyone says well "why aren't you playing this team and that team. You just have to remember that everyone has a schedule they are filling in and it isn't just open weeks here and an open week there that matches.

Heck, It's hard enough to just try and get a few couples over for a dinner on a Saturday night. Can't imagine trying to schedule every Friday night from August til November.:D

Your reply, obviously shows how much Kool-Aid you have ingested over the years and you have completely missed the point of the statement. Re-read, put the glass down and think. Hanging with the best in the GCL? Beating St. X 3+ years ago at Highlands, (great win BTW) beating Elders JV team last year (half the team suspended on a less than par team) are two entirely different things. Fair share of wins would be a little better than 500. I will give you 6 of 10 or 6 of 11 depending on the number of teams scheduled, but to compete week in and week out? Most years they would battle La Salle for fourth. They have the talent for sure, but nowhere near the depth required to play those four in one season and get their fair share of wins, unfortunately

You have no clue what you are talking about on this issue. this game meant everything to Elder and nothing to Highlands. If Elder wins they are in the playoffs, if they lose they are out. A one game play off if you will. Must win situation. Highlands wins its another in a long line of victories. It further solidifies what is among the greatest traditions in all of High School football. Does not make or break that tradition. Does not mean a thing to the ultimate outcome of this season. If Highlands loses it means nothing in the big picture. They still hold on to the great tradition. They still hold the number one seed for the playoffs. They are still the favorite to win the state championship for their class, just as they would if they were in Ohio.

I saw some of the players this afternoon. They were disappointed that they lost a game that they felt that they should have won. They did not feel like they had executed their game plan well enough to win the game. They know they have to get better to reach their goals for this season. They are not crushed by the loss. It was just another game on the schedule and they would like to have played a better game.

Funny how just a day after what was a very closely contested game Highlands can't compete with the likes of Elder. Game I saw last night says they most certainly can.

First thing I thought too..........He reminds me alot of our friend from Indypendence. LOL.

Personally I think the birds overachieve given the size of their school. There is no doubt about it. They are one of the top 5 teams in the state regardless of size year in and year out. One of the best traditions in the state and building on it each year. And yes, they have held their own each year against an Cincinnati based team. I don't think this translates to them being able to compete in the GCL or the entire state of OH as some have implied for a full year schedule. At some point the size of the school and the grind of doing it each week will catch up to them. They can however play with them one game at a time here and there and have proven that year in and year out.

There is no doubt in my mind HHS would be one of the top schools year in and year out at the DIII level in Ohio..They definately wouldn't win as many State Championships as they do in Ky, but they would be right there..
