Elder (OH) 38 Highlands 24

There is no doubt in my mind HHS would be one of the top schools year in and year out at the DIII level in Ohio..They definately wouldn't win as many State Championships as they do in Ky, but they would be right there..

I agree with you. No doubt in my mind. The difference is that there are mixed messages on this thread. Early on some posters implied they could be a top 6-7 team in the entire state regardless of size. This isn't going to happen. If you stick to the idea of playing in DIII then it's a whole different story and I agree with you.

Didn't they mean the state of Kentucky? In reality, Highlands (because of school size), should never beat a GCL team. The fact that they do so periodically and they give them all they can handle on other occasions, is amazing. Highlands has proven all they need to prove and can now concentrate on the ultimate goal, a state championship.

Highlands losing is like UK bball losing a lot of over analyzing.

NONE of the GCL teams can be accused of scheduling soft. These teams will play anybody they can. They are a lot like Trinity and HHS in that they have a hard time getting other local teams to play them. X has played (or will play) Elder, Lasalle, Mo, Trinity, Cleveland St. Eds, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Indy Cathedral (I think), Pickerington, and Louisville St. X. It is a murderers row of teams. They have lost 3 games this year and all three teams are undefeated (not sure if they beat St I's today). If they lost, then the four teams that have beat them are ALL UNDEFEATED this late in the season.

Elder and Mo play schedules just as tough. They have almost no breathers in their schedules. The worst team Elder has played this year is Winton Woods. That team would be top 3 team in Northern Kentucky.

I am as big a HHS fan as there is. However, I have complete respect for the GCL schools. For anybody to imply any of the GCL schools schedule soft is just unbelievable.

Did you read what I posted? When questioned I was specific in saying solid and even taking a chance or to the extreme of taking several chances on really good teams because they can't schedule locally. Again, read what I posted, not what you want to see.

You have no clue what you are talking about on this issue. this game meant everything to Elder and nothing to Highlands. If Elder wins they are in the playoffs, if they lose they are out. A one game play off if you will. Must win situation. Highlands wins its another in a long line of victories. It further solidifies what is among the greatest traditions in all of High School football. Does not make or break that tradition. Does not mean a thing to the ultimate outcome of this season. If Highlands loses it means nothing in the big picture. They still hold on to the great tradition. They still hold the number one seed for the playoffs. They are still the favorite to win the state championship for their class, just as they would if they were in Ohio.

I saw some of the players this afternoon. They were disappointed that they lost a game that they felt that they should have won. They did not feel like they had executed their game plan well enough to win the game. They know they have to get better to reach their goals for this season. They are not crushed by the loss. It was just another game on the schedule and they would like to have played a better game.

Funny how just a day after what was a very closely contested game Highlands can't compete with the likes of Elder. Game I saw last night says they most certainly can.

Put me with indy24 and I disagree with you ColdHard. I am not saying I disagree with you totally ColdHard but you are minimizing the importance of the Elder game to say the least.

In short, I have so much respect for the Highlands football program but what turns me off is the quasi-delusional comments by some of their fans after most Highlands losses.

Your reply, obviously shows how much Kool-Aid you have ingested over the years and you have completely missed the point of the statement. Re-read, put the glass down and think. Hanging with the best in the GCL? Beating St. X 3+ years ago at Highlands, (great win BTW) beating Elders JV team last year (half the team suspended on a less than par team) are two entirely different things. Fair share of wins would be a little better than 500. I will give you 6 of 10 or 6 of 11 depending on the number of teams scheduled, but to compete week in and week out? Welcome to BGP Indy. I have no connection to HHS and I would have to disagree with you that HHS could not compete in GCL. The only thing between Highlands and a win over Elder the other night was a lack of big game experience.

KY teams are built with a different philosophy than Ohio teams. On the defensive side of the ball, size is almost universally sacrificed for speed. Even on the defensive line, you wont see a DL much bigger than 220. For the most part, we do not see a lot of big backs here , (but when we do , they tend to be very effective). This is the only adjustment I see HHS having to make, bigger DL.

I apologize, I have my threads confused. In the "Significance of the Highlands/Elder game" thread Sports Fan and Stinkboy both asked if the number two team in the state of KY was as good as the 6-7 in the state of Ohio.

Highlands competition is scarce aroundthe NKY area. Why don't they at least move up to 5A where the competition would be better for them?

They won 5A every year they were in that class.

Yes, winning the game was important to HHS -- all games are important to them and they take any loss hard. But anyone who thinks it's the be all and end all for the players and coaches of this team simply doesn't understand the culture surrounding the program. Important - yes. End of the word? Not at all.

My post that you quoted was in response to Indy's assertion that This was HHS game of the year and just another game to Elder. I pointed out that he was wrong. In fact it was a must win for Elder. If they lose to Highlands Friday they would have been out of he playoffs.

As to,quasi delusional responses after losses, I look back at the response from H fans and I see a lot of folks saying well played game and H did not match Elder's size. I don't see a whole lot of delusional statements. I do see them objecting to the assertion that they were outclassed, can't hang with Ohio teams, under schedule and a host of other shots that have been taken at the program the last two days. I know Highlands does not lose often, and there are many ready to take shots when they do. So maybe I and a few others are a bit defensive at this point.

To the point of my original post, Indy said, "to Highlands this was their mini state championship. To Elder this was just another game." He could not be more wrong. You can take the quasi out of delusional if you cannot see that Elder came into this game in a must win situation. It was a single elimination playoff game to them. No doubt Highlands had this game circled on their schedule, but it was Elder who HAD to win.

??? Is this making exception to T and X?

I think someone forgot this thread was about the Elder/Highlands game on Friday.

Oh, and by the way how about a shout for the Highlands O-line? They have done a great job this season.

I probably should have said NKy instead of KY. I don't see enough of Louisville and Lexington teams to speak with authority.

Listen to the GURU! Quit drinking the Blue Kool Aid and realize these GCL schools should beat Highlands. The fact that you actually gave them a game is Awesome. No one expected it to be this close. To believe that you are something you are not, and can compete on a regular basis with GCL schools is absurd. The pure number of boys enrolled in school is enough to dictate who should win on a regular basis. The other fact is Elder plays Moeller, St. X, etc.....on a weekly basis. Highlands plays Pendleton, Harrison, Mason, no fault of their own, on a weekly basis. One/two big games a year, Cov. Cath, and I will throw in Boyle/Elder/or whatever Cincy team is scheduled. I am sure Highlands was stoked to play Elder, where Elder, although fully prepared, was not as stoked to play Highlands. This was Highlands mini-state championship! To Elder it was just another tough game! I'm sure they did not take Highlands lightly, but I promise you they were not as fired up to play Highlands as they were to play Moeller/St. X/St. I's/Indy Cathedral/Indy Ben Davis/Trinity/etc........... Just be proud of your team and realize Ohio football overall is a few steps ahead of Kentucky football. Whether it is pure numbers, which I believe it is, or talent, which comes with greater numbers! Highlands would be a 500 team if they played the schedule Elder played. Sorry about the reality check.

Wow, it's been brewing 2 years for you hasn't it. Look like the Bird faithful got another one. Enjoy the ride my friend!

I agree. Highlands couldn't play teams like this every week. They simply don't have the size and depth. If the Birds lost McCoy, Harris, or a couple key linemen, this game would've gotten ugly quickly. That's certainly not a knock against the Birds. They are, numbers wise, probably one of the best programs in the country. Hey, just because you won a million in the pick six, doesn't mean you can move to Indian Hill and retire.....
