I'm an Obama guy but I do truly wish both parties had guys the entire nation could get behind and proud to have one of them leading our country. I'd love to have an election where even if your guy lost you still felt like we win as a country for having him. It's a 'lesser of two evils' climate now. We need to get to the 'everybody wins regardless of who loses' climate. Has there ever been an election where both candidates were awesome?

I honestly don't think Romney was doing anything but figuring out his voting base. Come on people, he only stated facts. Get over it. It's part of what you do when you are trying to become president. Anyone out there that doesn't think Obama has not had this same conversation, if not more indepth, is just absolutely cluless.

 

I do believe he was talking about a block of voters that he can't win. I don't think he was saying they're not important or that he doesnt' care about them as people.

 

However, where he was 100% wrong was lumping them in a group and saying that they are all looking for handouts. That is not the case. You can't say he's right in that regard. It's insulting to the working mom or the Army vet who collects from the govt.

I will admit that I have not watched the whole video, which went up on the Mother Jones site in its entireity yesterday. But the more I hear, the more it becomes apparrent that Candidate Romney is WOEFULLY unprepared to become the "leader of the free world". The whole 47% thing, which should be patently offensive to a huge percentage of that 47% (retirees, college students, people working low-income jobs, people receiving SSDI benefits, and really rich folks who take legal advantage of loopholes) is only one issue. To say that these people don't take personal responsibility or care for their lives is totally out of touch. And I will say that the notion that poor people have too much money has always struck me as odd.

 

Some Republican candidates are running from this faster than ol' papa from a steaming plate of stewed tomatoes and okra.

 

Punting the ball down the field and hoping for the best with respect to Israeli-Palestinian relations - particularly in light of recent criticism of the President's leadership in foreign affairs - is comical and spineless. Terrorism advice to Iran is either frightening or extraordinarily naive at best.

As a staunch Republican, I have to admit I am dismayed by these comments.

We have heard this statement in Kentucky politics for many years: "Don't vote for those evil Republicans because they will take away your government checks." Now it's a statement that has gone nationwide... Sad but true..

The more I hear, the worse I feel about Gov Romney's comments. After viewing the video, I feel that he wasn't "misspeaking" as much as he was unguarded in expressing his sentiments. Yeah...I believe he believes that the true victims are the really rich.

 

I still can't figure out how he plans to deal with those 47%. Near as I can tell, he's inclined to throw them overboard and let them sink or swim.

As to the thinking by some on the left that this election is over Chuck Todd gave a great insight this morning. He said that President Obama's numbers (likability, handling the economy, etc) are almost exactly what President Bush's numbers were in Sep 2004. Despite those positive numbers it was not a shoo-in for him to capture the election.

What's wrong with it? I happen to agree with him. The Republican party would be dead and this nation would end up in trouble. One party rule is never good for a nation.

Given the electoral map your job may already be done. However this wouldn't make your job any easier because there's just as many people who agree with him as disagree. You might strengthen his conservative base. The problem in this election is it is going to be won by the true independants and neither side really knows what's going to sway them.

He said 47% are not making enough salary and not paying into the government tax.

 

Almost half this country pays into the government tax and almost half does not. Do the math. If you have half or less then half of the people working and supporting the ones that can't find a job, or don't want to find a job, (and they are out there) these United States are not going to be.

 

Obama is increasing unemployment, medicare, and fewer jobs are being created. We have more people on welfare today than 3 years ago. Fifteen million to be exact. Who do you think is paying for that?

 

 

I don't want the Government to take care of me. I can't imagine anyone that would. Yet, there are people and the number is growing that want to be taken care of instead of building on their own.

I would like to add:

1. Welfare is one of the easiest vote buying methods around.

2. This nation cannot continue to spend more money than it makes.

3. The 47% quote was not well worded, but then again, he wasn't talking to the world when he said it. I wonder how many times Obama has said inflamatory comments to his donors at functions but there wasn't a camera or mic around to pick it up. And imo, Romney is right about the majority of the 47% being perfectly satisfied right where they are, I would estimate about 30%. Someone posted in one of the various threads we have going that he had offered jobs paying over $15 per hour to people and they had turned him down because they were on government assistance. This happens far more than the Democrats would like to admit. Some people don't look at it as being all that bad to draw unemployment, SSI, food stamps, medical card, heating fuel vouchers, electricity vouchers, etc. They can lay in bed until noon and ramble around the rest of the day and night while John P. Taxpayer is out busting his hump paying for their assistance.

I'm not staunch anything and I couldn't care less about his comments. He was playing to the room when he thought he wasn't being recorded. We've always heard actions speak louder then words. Look at Romney's track record for helping people. Why don't we hear more about that from Mother Jones?

You hit on an interesting point (at least to me).

 

I contend Mr Romney is taking the same (failed) path as Sen McCain. He is not being his true self. He's trying to appeal to the far right of the party when, in reality, that's not him or his policies.
