Reds simply don't have very smart baseball players. Unbelievably bad base running on two occasions today.

And the franchise has left the game due to an injury.

Uh oh. Votto out of the game with an injury...

Plan is the same with Rolen

Scott Rolen was out of the lineup today. It was just a normal day off, i.e., the plan is to use him the same as he was used before going on to the disabled list.

“We rest day after night,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “We’re hoping he gets his stroke here. He’s hit some balls good. His average isn’t indicative of that. Every year, you’ve got a tough-luck guy. He’s it. All everyone sees is the end result. Some guys get every blooper and chop through the infield you can get.

“We’re hoping before he gets down about it — which I don’t feel he will — that he gets some breaks.”

Rolen is hitting .184 overall. He’s hitting .212 (7-for-33) since returning from the disabled list. He’s 0-for-his-last-16 with eight strikeouts.

Baker doesn’t think Rolen will hit if he plays less.

“This is to preserve him for the end, so he’s strong,” Baker said. “Rarely is less more, especially when you’re trying to get your stroke. You can’t just look at now. You’ve got to look at his career. I’m into the big picture. Sometimes I’m into the small picture. But sooner or later, water seeks its own level. They get back to where they’re supposed to be — or at least pretty close.”

Todd Frazier, who started at third base today, has cooled considerably as well. Frazier was 4-for-for-his-last-25 (.160) with 10 strikeouts entering today’s game.

This was from Fay's Blog...I love the Comments section  and I must say I couldn't have said much of it any better myself...

*Looking at the "big picture" with Rolen is idiotic -- plain and simple. He's an oft-injured 37 year old. His career numbers aren't very helpful anymore. He's not the player he once was. He's barely half the player he once was. His BABIP is low, which does suggest *some* bad luck. But his BB% is down and his K% is up. Also, I'm no scout, but he doesn't seem to be hitting balls as hard as used to, which would lead to a low BABIP. It's probably not bad luck; it's diminished skill level. His slash line since the 2010 All-Star break is more indicative of where he's at than his career numbers. It's that simple. He's not going to be a productive "regular" ever again.

*If anybody was noticing - when ROLEN was out, Frazier was getting into a pretty solid groove - his defense was improving, his hitting was not great but still better than ROLENs production. Yes the team could do better but wheres Jockety ???? As soon as Rolen came off DL and started - he's lost some ground and been inconsistant. It's time to put him out there and let him play for 45 days. sub in Rolen in late inning games with a lead. give a rest by letting ROLEN start every 7-10 days. If he doesn't work out - trade or acquire a third baseman. Its been way to many years now that the 'holes' in this lineup were supposed to be addressed but turn out to be 'we'll address it next year' l

*Maybe you ought to go see him in action - he doesn't have the jump or the quickness in range to get balls anymore. He's useful as a backup - nothing else. If management doesn't wake up soon - the REDS will be trying to chase first place. On another note - REDS would be better off putting the 'good' hitting pitchers in the 2 hole and let the other regular players start thinking about their future as a RED MLB player.

*Scott Rolen hasn't hit since June of 2010. That isn't bad luck. That is old age and a bum shoulder catching up to him.

Looks liked a potential Day to Day thing hopefully with Votto...It didn't look to serious, maybe similar to what BP went through earlier in the year...Looked like a groin to me, I wouldn't be surprised if they put him on the 15 Day DL to be extra careful and tried bringing him back after the All Star Break...Hopefully it's not very serious...

Knee inflammation for Votto...

Knee inflammation for Votto...

I'll take that...

Knee inflammation for Votto...

I would have to think that must have been something that's been bothering him for a bit.

Just started reading. Almost threw the phone when I read Votto was injured.

Knee inflammation for Votto...

I was honestly affraid of something like that, when he rounded second last night on his way to 3rd he just didn't look quite right. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Why should he have gotten tossed again?

LRCW is correct.

Might explain why it took him so long to get to 3rd too. Not that he has blazing speed but he's not slow.

Even with knee inflammation I think it would be smart to 15 day DL Votto...Have him sit out the All-Star festivities and bring him back afterwards, they need him at full strength in the Second Half...The Reds can let Frazier play 1B the majority of the time (although they won't) or Costanzo, Lutz and Soto are all 1st Baseman that are on the 40 man that they can choose from to bring up...

Even though it was a knee instead of a groin that would probably be a good idea. With the All Star break coming up he could rest it for a couple of weeks and not miss too many games. I don't think they can win the division if Votto is out for an extended time but given the division I think it would be better to get by for a couple of weeks and have him back at 100% the rest of the season.
