TMZ reporting Junior Seau is dead

Featured Replies

North County Times is reporting his death was by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. That's no quick and easy (or for-sure) way to go. Could this be another situation like Dave Duerson's?

Dave Duerson’s son: “He was hoping to be a part of an answer"

Five days after former Bears safety Dave Duerson took his own life, his family is still trying to come to grips with his final message.

“PLEASE, SEE THAT MY BRAIN IS GIVEN TO THE NFL’S BRAIN BANK,” Duerson’s last text message to them read, according to Alan Schwartz of the New York Times.

The message behind the heartbreaking message seems pretty clear.

“He was looking for an answer,” his son Tregg Duerson said. “And he was hoping to be a part of an answer.”

I really hate to hear this. Great player on the field and seemed like a nice guy off the field. They played part of an interview from November where he talked about enjoying his retirement. He talked about surfing and paddleboarding, I wonder what went wrong.

Shouldn't his personal life and finances be looked at before we speculate about a concussion related suicide?

Probably. I wonder what % of suicides by gun shot shoot themselves in the chest.

Schefter reported that Junior was never listed on the injured list with a concussion.

Interesting and probably speaks more to the times than actual head injuries.

While that may be true I do believe Hines Ward is another who hasn't been listed many times on the concussion list but even he has admitted that he has had multiple concussions. Didn't Hines insinuate that guys who admitted they had concussions were soft? It was the culture. Hit, get up, lie to the trainer, get back on the field, keep going. I'd say Junior's brain is full of evidence of concussions in his past.

What a bizzare day in the NFL. The awesome story on the Bucs sigining the paraylized kid from Rutgers. Bountygate seeing Vilma suspended for the year now this. All day long there has been contraversy over Vilma's suspension, player safety etc. Almost ironic that a man who played LBer fearless for TWENTY YEARS takes his own life. I think this just heats up the concussions/post football stuff even more. I'm glad somebody posted the Duerson link.

Don't foregt he drove a jeep off a cliff not long ago. Supposedly he left a note and texted his kids he loved them. Everybody I've heard that played with him rave about how much he loved his kids. How much he loved football. You could almost feel each of them saying he really sturggled to find his place once he walked away from the game. When you've done something for 35 or so years it's hard to go cold turkey. The rush, the friends, the release etc. I think there is a REALLY big lesson to be learned from this. If you EVER hear anybody crying out for help, joking about suicide etc you HAVE to step back and look at it seriously. Most acted like they knew he had dealt with a lot of depression etc.

Sad. He had a motor! All his teammates have raved about what a great guy he was. How much he had done for San Diego etc.

Very sad to hear this news. I had a dear friend of mine that just took her life 5 days ago and I just can't wrap my head around it. Why didn't they reach out to someone for help? I just don't understand how someone can be that sad or that hurt that their only alternative is death. Something I'll never understand but I hope and pray that their families are able to find a way to cope with the situations that they've put them in.

I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Tragedy. Wonder if any of Seau's family and close friends had any idea he was in such pain?

Hearing Marcellus Wiley open up about all of this was tough. But I think his story about how Junior would never let the team doctors/trainers help him out in the training room tells a lot about this. I'm no psychologist but that story falls right in line with this. Sounds like Junior had an extremely strong shell, but was a lot weaker on the inside than anyone knew and he wouldn't ever let anyone seet that.

That was hard to listen to. So much pain and sorrow in his words. I feel terrible for all the family and friends. Could this be the straw that broke the camels back in regards to the NFL and head injuries?

I wouldn't figure so unless there is proof positive that Seau suffered from CTE and that there were no previously undisclosed financial/drug/family issues.

This was sad to hear; Junior Seau is a player that I always liked. Horrible way for his life to end and has to be very hard on his family, friends, and others.
