Didn't see this one coming. I know BB had a player injured a game or two ago; but still unexpected.

Congratulations to the Calvary Christian Cougars who today defeated the Brossart Mustangs for the first time in the history of their program 48-46 in a contest with 37th District implications.

The Silver Grove Big Trains will wake up in the morning to discover that next Monday's play-in game will be against Brossart, and Campbell County will wonder where their district top seed privileges have gone, as the Mustangs, and not the Cougars now loom in their future, and Coach Frommeyer (who was in attendance) and his Scott Eagles will now have to change their prep plans and look towards a re-match with Calvary.

Calvary Junior Mason Rusch, who scored his 2,000th point earlier this week, is the real deal, and was the best player on the floor on this afternoon, scoring 26 points, and serving up the assist that led to the Josh Moran game-winner.

The Mustangs led 12-6 at the first quarter stop, on the merits of a pair of threes, one by Stephen Verst and the other by Carson Schirmer. Rousch scored six points apiece in each of the first two stanzas, and rallied his team to outscore the home team 10-6 and knot things up at halftime 18-18. The Mustangs pushed out to a short-lived five point lead (25-20) in the third quarter, but again it would be Rusch who would score ten in the period while Josh Moran (2) and Cross Dugan, hit 3-pointers, giving the Cougars a 39-31 lead with 8 mintues to go in the game.

The Cougar lead became ten at 43-33 with under five minutes to play, when the Mustangs sensed the urgency and battled back, knotting the score at 46-46 with time running out, appearing to send the game to overtime, when Rusch threw ahead to Josh Moran who hit the left-handed layup ahead of the horn to secure the upset.

Rouch finished the game with 26 points, while J.D. Schumacher led three Brossart double-figure scorers with 14 points. Ethan Eilerman and Carson Schirmer contributed 11 points each.

The Mustangs contributed to our own demise, hitting on only 3 of 8 from the free-throw line, missing an abundance of close-in shots and turning the ball over on 17 occasions.

Life will go on as the Mustangs travel to Mason County for a varsity only contest on Tuesday night, and will return home to host Bellevue on Wednesday night for Senior Night.

Calvary Christian played the better game tonight. Mason Rouch is a fun player to watch play. Congratulations on their victory they deserved it. The pass at the end of game was a bullet right to his teammate under the basket. Best of luck the rest of the season.
