With the win St.Henry wraps up the 2 seed in the district and gets Lloyd the 3 seed in the districts (which are at Lloyd).

Lloyd has a chance to tie it on a 3 at the end but just misses. St.Henry was up by 12 or so late in the 4th but couldn't put them away.

Hanover and Mt.St. Joe there checking out Goetz who had another good game.

He has Alex Poythress like traits, a physical specimen that settles for too many jump shots. I don't think Paul realizes how good he can be. If he could go to his right and attack the basket more, it would really elevate his game.

Does any one know if Townsend is still on the team? A 2 year starter for the Juggs and I didn't see him in the building. Lloyd has to get Hamilton the ball more, he scored 20 on very few touches.

A competitive fun played game in E-town last night.

St. Henry hangs on against Lloyd

St. Henry pulled off its third-straight win over a 34th District opponent Friday night by taking down Lloyd, 69-66, on the road at Scheben Gymnasium.

Senior guard Adam Goetz poured in 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting, and forward Paul Wallenhorst added 19 points and six rebounds for the Crusaders.

After trailing by as many as 15 points early in the fourth quarter, Lloyd rallied by hitting three quick 3-pointers, creating turnovers with its full court pressure defense, to get back within four, 66-62, on a turnaround jumper in the lane by Sterling Hamilton with under two minutes to play. Jamal Neal’s drive to the rim with 40 seconds brought the Juggernauts within two.

After the two teams traded baskets, Goetz made 1 of 2 free throws in the double bonus to put St. Henry up by three with eight seconds to play. Lloyd senior Andrew Kemen had a decent look at a buzzer-beater three in the corner to tie, but it was just off the mark.

“Turnovers, missed layups, and you have to give Lloyd credit,” St. Henry coach Dave Faust said about what went wrong for his team in the fourth quarter. “They turned up the pressure and we didn’t handle it very well, and then we let a couple of their shooters shoot. Fortunately, we did enough in the first 27 or 28 minutes to hang on.”

“I thought our guys really displayed some toughness that we’ve been looking for,” Lloyd coach Mike Key said. “I was really proud of the comeback effort in the fourth quarter. Blake (Donovan) pushed it down the floor, and Andrew (Kemen) got a good look (on the last shot). We didn’t have anymore timeouts, and we got a good look at it… just missed it a little wide right.”

Dixie Heights, which is currently undefeated in district play, deserves to be recognized as the favorite heading into the 34th District tournament, but both coaches agreed after Friday night’s game that the district is deep and competitive this season.

“We’ll probably play Lloyd again in a couple of weeks, and it will be a war,” Faust said. “No matter who we play it’s going to be a war.”

Key agreed: “I really think when we all are playing well, you can throw the top four of us in a hat – and Villa isn’t far behind – and whoever is playing the best is going to come out on top at the end.”

With the win, St. Henry wrapped up district play with a 3-1 record – its only loss coming to Dixie. Dixie, currently 3-0 in the district, will finish up Saturday night at Ludlow (1-2). Lloyd (1-2) will wrap up district play on Feb. 10 against Villa (0-3). The district tournament will be held at Dixie.

After a back-and-forth first quarter in Friday night’s game, a put-back by St. Henry senior Grant Williams at the buzzer pushed the Crusaders’ lead to 17-12.

Logan Beechem’s three to open the second quarter, plus a hanging 10-foot jumper from Goetz a few possessions later, extended that lead to double-digits, 22-12. However, Davonte Williams ended the Crusaders’ run by burying a corner three for the Juggernauts with six minutes to play in the half.

Williams finished with seven points in the quarter to keep Lloyd close, as St. Henry’s lead fluctuated between three and eight points the rest of the half.

Goetz countered with eight points in the period for the Crusaders. His assist to Stephen Maley for a corner three with 10 seconds to play gave his team a 33-25 lead at halftime. Maley finished with four threes in the game.

Lloyd came out of the locker room with some momentum to start the second half. Blake Donovan’s pull-up jumper with 5:15 to play in the third quarter cut the Juggernauts’ deficit to one-point, 35-34, but that’s as close as they’d get. Back-to-back and-one finishes by sophomore Elliott Berling and Wallenhorst pushed the Crusaders’ lead back up to 41-34 less than a minute later.

St. Henry continued on a 15-5 run. Wallenhorst’s jumper pushed the lead over double-digits, 50-39, by the end of the third quarter, and just a few possessions into the fourth, the Crusaders stretched that advantage to 15, setting up the wild finish.

“We knew coming into the game they’d be a good opponent,” Goetz said. “They have good, quick guards. It was a good thing we rebounded and made free throws.”

Lloyd’s leading scorer Sterling Hamilton, who came into the night averaging 14.5 points per game, finished with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with nine rebounds and two blocks. Neal added 11 points, four steals, and three assists for the Juggernauts, and was a huge part of their fourth quarter comeback.

Early in the season you can tell he didn't play Sumer ball. Sounds like he has his game back.
