  1. They petitioned the KHSAA to move two years ago and again last year. Were denied both times, even though the school's enrollment had dipped pretty close to the cutoff in 2012 and below it the next year.
  2. If Fort Knox was a top 10 team, then that means numbers absolutely are not an issue. If Fort Knox had even the slightest bit of success this year or last, I'd be willing to bet more kids would be willing to give football a chance. But the Eagles aren't, and the kids don't give a crap about football. Here's what I don't really get, either: The numbers on both soccer teams are up this season. Not sure if that's in correlation with it being a World Cup year, but the boys' team had over 30 players at the start of the year -- after only having 15-20 last year -- and the girls' team had over 35 -- after only having 12-15 last year. But football took a hit. They had 40-some players at the beginning of last year, but injuries took their toll. They were expecting to have a good chunk of those kids back for this season, but wound up with only two kids -- Escoffery and Irving, who had a lot of playing experience coming back -- after the 3/1 deactivation. It's a sad situation on post. And I'm not sure how it can be fixed, short of shutting it down.
  3. Once again: It is a district game. There are no contracts for those games. They couldn't schedule it any other time. Yeah, because that'll be a good thing.
  4. Because they, IMHO, don't give a crap about the team. If they did, they would have waited to leave -- but they didn't. And just spit-balling here, but I'm guessing they couldn't move the game to Thursday since it was played at a JCPS school. Does JCPS still have the rule that teams can't play on the Friday of fall break?
  5. Coach Combs is a class act, plain and simple. Tonight would have been his first game back since the Fort Campbell game on Sept. 5. Not going into details, either, but his family's been through hell the last few weeks.
  6. Coach Combs knew, and so did Coach Davis. The two had talked earlier in the week, when Combs was sure they'd have at least 17 or 18 kids to play. That number obviously changed. Combs said he tried to get in touch with Davis sooner today, but they were in a pep rally at the school and weren't reached for about 30 minutes after Combs found out.
  7. That 33 is a big misnomer. Some kids have quit and others are injured. On Thursday, they were down to 15 players who would've played tonight at DeSales. Not great, but it's better than 12. However, one of the parents took two more players and one of their friends -- who is on the team -- on vacation, and didn't tell Coach Combs or the administration until very late this afternoon that they weren't going to be in town for the game. It sucks for DeSales that the game got cancelled, but it was in the best interests of Fort Knox to not play tonight.
  8. His facemask didn't hit Roethlisberger's chest. You can clearly see the Ravens' guy lower his head and the crown of his helmet is planted in Roethlisberger's chest -- which is why the ref threw the flag. He led with his head, which is a big no-no nowadays.
  9. Yes, but KHSAA wasn't going to move SW this season when realignment is set for next season. Makes absolutely no sense.
  10. Not defending what was written, but ... I'm guessing the newspaper doesn't have "three sets of eyes" to look over everything. Newspaper staffs across the country are shrinking, and it wouldn't surprise me to know this paper only has a handful of people on staff -- total. Without seeing the rest of the clipping, I can't tell if it's in sports or an opinion page.
  11. Before anyone thinks I'm implying something with this thread, I'm not. Combs is one of the good guys out there, and his staff is solid. I was just curious as to what folks thought about Fort Knox's situation which, as gchs pointed out, changes from year to year. I don't think that's something I could deal with as a head coach. It's hard to build anything when you don't know who's going to return and who you'll be missing every year. I know they had one player whose dad got PCS'd a few years ago before the season even ended -- and he was a senior. So please, don't make this into anything it's not.
  12. Something I want to try with y'all: a what-if game, where I list a scenario and you tell me how you would handle things. Up first: Fort Knox. The Eagles are 0-5 and have only been competitive in one game (not counting the weather-shortened game against Elizabethtown). They've been held to one touchdown or less in their other four games and their single wing attack isn't moving the ball very well. They've got a couple of good players in Escoffery and Irving, the only two kids back from last season, but had to start five freshmen on defense against Bardstown last week. Fort Knox is dropping to 1A next year, which should help some. They'll be in a district with Berea, Bethlehem, Campbellsville and Caverna. What if you were in charge? What things would you want to change and what things would you want to keep? How would you get kids to come out for the team and keep them on the team?
  13. The game will be much closer than last season, I think, but DeSales wins by 21.
  14. The Brewer kid is pretty dang good. I don't think he's near Jaggers' level, but he's good for a sophomore.
  15. LaRue looked much better than last week. Green had a rough first half, but turned it on in the second half. Glad I got to see Coach Engstrand again. It had been several years since we saw each other.
  16. If it truly is about wins and losses, why fire him two games into the season -- and especially coming off a victory? Doesn't add up.
  17. The KHSAA pushed the season back a week in, IIRC, 2005 or 2006 in response to the heat. I remember the heat being really bad those years, when it seemed like it was pushing 100 just about every day -- and even higher when the heat index was factored in -- and KHSAA responded by moving the start of the regular season back a week. I don't see why they can't do that again, unless it has to do with scheduling conflicts with Western. Then, I could see them not being willing or even able to move the start back another week.
  18. I love watching a Wing-T team. If your defense isn't prepared for it, good luck keeping the backs from ripping off long runs time and time again.
  19. I can't stand reading Retro's post because of that font. Holy crap.
  20. Do you have nothing better to do than to pick on teenage kids?
  21. If we're going based on individual seasons, I've got to throw LaRue County's 2002 squad in there. Went undefeated until meeting Corbin in the quarterfinals, and should've won that game -- IMHO.
