Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Should the KHSAA be forced to investigate?

Should the newspaper be held liable for slander by the Bell staff?

Pretty bold article! If true Bell's coaches should face the harshest of punishments...if this is all just "sour grapes" and hearsay the writer should face the harshest of punishments.

Can we get a link?

There is none right now.

They don't have the article online...the above image is all we have until they upload it. It may not work for you, but when I click the image it blows it up to where you can read the whole thing.

Brady Smiley , author, is a Conner grad who plays baseball at Union. Shocking that a Conner grad would rile people up.

We'd need to see film before we are able to agree or disagree with his conclusions.

I find "targeting" to be more of a myth than reality. Of course, a star player is going to get extra attention and some extra juice on a hit. That's human nature. If there was any issue on the part of the KCC staff it should be with the officials. They obviously didn't see a late hit.

I would also say that I do not share Brady's disdain for the BC staff for not having their players take a knee. Some on BGP know my stance on that youth soccer type mentality.

I would say the coaches should have stayed to shake hands. No issue with sending the players right to the bus in a hostile environment.

I guess my first question is a good place to begin.

A member of the media has made a very serious public accusation about a very hot button issue.

Should the KHSAA take this seriously and investigate further?

From the game thread:

A few quotes from Knox Central Head Coach Scott Russell that were in today's Times Tribune. "It was a cheap shot on Matthew Barger. He was a defenseless player 20 yards from the ball. Some teams try to do stuff like that." He had this to say about the penalty differential, "I'm not one to make excuses for my team, but when the penalties are that one sided, it's hard to believe. I know they did not play that perfect of a game and that we did not play that unsound of a game."

I'd need to see the film as well. No way to know if the play(s) were dirty without seeing some evidence. All schools teach kids to play till the whistle stops blowing....could be one of those situations here.

Didn't Wayne Mills coach at Knox Central at one time?

Yes.. he was the KC Head Coach prior to taking the Bell gig.

My very first response to this is that the author should never have used the term "Bounty" without giving more evidence.

"Targeting" and "Bounty" are not the same... you can have targeting without a bounty...but cannot have a bounty without targeting. A bounty would mean it was a pre-conceived act that was encouraged by some type of reward.

Targeting could be misinterpreted, a bounty OTOH is very cut and dry.

So a newspaper writer writes an article that jeopardizes the reputation and job security of a coach based on his opinion that a bounty was placed in a game in which Team A knocked Team B's player out of the game...without ever getting a penalty for doing so...and an editor lets it go to print...

...I think a few people are going to lose their jobs over this one, but I HIGHLY doubt it's going to be a football coach of any kind.

I can't see the Bell Coaching Staff having their players targeting another player. Now I could see a player doing something like that on his own, although I'm not saying that is what happened in this case because I have not a shred of evidence to back that up.

I think that the Editor of The Mountain Advocate made a big mistake by allowing the article to appear in the paper as written.
