When was the last defending State Champ to begin the next season 0-3?

In leu of the high possibility that Collins can be 0-3 after Friday night, I was wondering when was the last time this happened?

That is a good question.

Danville in 1988 is the only one that rings a bell. Won it all in 87. Harp takes over in 88, and loses the first three games out of the gate to St. X, Henry Clay and Somerset I believe?

Trinity was 0-4 in '03

No, they beat Somerset in the regular season in 1988. Somerset beat the Admirals in the state semi-finals and then lost to Fort Knox in the finals.

Danville might have been 0-3 but Somerset wasn't one of the losses.

Trinity went 1-3 in their first 4 games last year. I can't remember if they lost the first 3 or not. I think they won their 2nd but lost 1st, 3rd and 4th if I'm not mistaken.

I think Shelby Co was 5-5 when the playoffs started but don't know how they started out.

Caldwell County won the 1998 Class 2A title, lost their first five in 1999 and finished 2-8.

I thought perhaps Covington Holy Cross might be the last one, but they won their first game in 2012 and then lost 5 in a row.

That's it. Yeah, they were 0-3..was thinking Somerset got them twice that year. Thanks!

The third loss was to unbeaten Lincoln County. (Pats lost in the AAA state semi-final)

I didn't realize defending champs came out with bad records this many times........

I'm not surprised as particularly in high school a team can jump up with an outstanding class then fall on hard times when they leave.

I'm not surprised as particularly in high school a team can jump up with an outstanding class then fall on hard times when they leave.

This is particularly true in two cases:

1) Smaller schools - as 75 said, they can make a run with a great class and then discover there is not much behind them, The big schools can often weather the storm a little better as the drop off is not normally as steep from one class to the next.

2) A school wins it all in the last year of the 2-year contract cycles. Often when a team wins it all, it was pretty good the year before too. That's two solid years which will result in a lot of what might have been winnable non-district opponents opting to not re-up their contracts. Hence, you get tougher opponents the year following winning it all.

...and then the killer, when #1 happens and so does #2...then you see quite the nasty post-championship year.

In Danville's case it was the perfect storm.

The team lost its QB, FB, most of the line and Wideouts from the '87 Title Squad.

Add to that the fact that Tom Duffy took his trade to HHS and Sam Harp was the new coach.

Add to the schedule the first three games were against some powerful teams: St Xavier, Henry Clay, and Lincoln County and it was the perfect storm.

Still, the Ads only lost one other regular season game, won their District, advanced to the State Semi-Finals and lost to a good Somerset squad.

The next season, 1989, Danville would win another AA State Title.
