  1. Since the Laurel Co schools were realigned into the 13th its hard to get very excited about the 12th.
  2. Actually, I think it was three years. I know 71 and 72 and maybe 70. In one of those years Evarts scored on a 50 yard touchdown pass to win the game on the last play of the game. The game was played at Middlesboro. After the game Ken Parsons, an EHS assistant coach was stabbed by a Middlesboro fan. Parsons spent a few days in the Middlesboro hospital. In 72 we beat Middlesboro 8-7 and held Middlesboro star running back Bimbo Fuson to 30 yards rushing, 25 of which was on one touchdown run. The 75 Middlesboro team may have been their best. They were beaten by Scott Co in the AA title game after leading in the 4th quarter by 2 or 3 touchdowns.
  3. The other controversial ending with Corbin came the year before in 1974. We (EHS) had a 14-7 lead with 2:00 to go in the 4th. A Corbin running back went around left end slipped and fell to both knees. Both teams stopped. The whistle never sounded and the kid got up and ran an 80 yard touchdown. The 2 point conversion made it 15-14 Corbin. We had time to move the ball to the 10 where we were held on 4th and inches with about a minute to play.
  4. It was indeed Belfry. Evarts had the game well in hand and had all the momentum when the electricity went out late in the 3rd quarter due to a house fire at Verda. After what seemed like a two hour wait. Everyone traveled to Huff Park to finish the game. At Harlan the momentum turned and it was all Belfry. I think the final score was something like 26-21.
  5. If I am not mistaken, Lynch won the state title in 1969 with star running back Joe Washington. Lynch had only one defeat on the year, to Evarts 31-19. Lynch's last great team was in 1972. Evarts again upset Lynch in a pouring rain 7-0 on a blocked punt by Thomas Fields.
  6. Evarts was AA in 1975 and for a few years after. I don't know what year EHS went down to class A. In 1975 a great Corbin team beat us 12-7 on a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. We had held Corbin at the 1 yard line for 4 plays. On 4th down there was a pass interference penalty on EHS on 4th down that gave Corbin an extra play to win the game. Corbin and Middlesboro were both state powerhouses in those years.
  7. The Evarts-Harlan game was not always a district game. Throughout the 60's and 70s Evarts was a AA school (when there was only A and AA outside of Louisville) and Harlan has been A since classes were formed. Evarts big district rivals in the 60s and 70s was Middlesboro and Corbin.
  8. Tim Browning has done a fantastic job building the Gallatin Co program from scratch. Browning may be one of the better young coaches in the state.
  9. I think every HS radio broadcast crew are homers.
  10. Nor should they. However, its my personal belief that with Johnson and Crawford Corbin has the potential to be a state power again. Its also my opinion that to be a state power you need to have a few state powers sprinkled through your schedule. Maybe they will this year, who knows.
  11. The last couple years Corbin's schedule has been very typical of other 13th region teams. Other than South Laurel they haven't played any of the state's powers. I don't think you would include Adair Co or Shelby Valley as state powers. Its not been a bad schedule, just nothing real special. It would be nice to see them schedule a hand full of games against teams like Madison Central, Henry Clay, Bryan Station, etc.
  12. Dang. Two seperate newspaper's editors print a story about the dead playing football.
  13. According to the Times-Tribune Corbin has a good "corpse" of receivers. To watch a "corpse" catch a football would be worth the drive from Harlan and the price of the ticket. “We had seen them on film last year and they have an excellent quarterback and an excellent corpse of receivers,” said Haywood. “We were well-pleased with our defense.”
  14. I know Scott Co plays Vashon Mo, Chicago Whitney Young, St Anthony NJ, Beach Ball Classic, and City of Palms. Plus they play in the 11th region.
  15. LC will be very good this year. Easily top five IMO.
  16. I still think Cumberland and Corbin are the two favorites.
  17. Morrow is a very good coach who has had a few good teams and one great team. He needs a couple more runs deep into the Sweet 16 to be compared with coaches like Renner, Hicks, Riley, and Mabry.
  18. Too many vacations, baseball games, and football camps will stunt your growth.
  19. South will not be the same team we have known for the past several years.
  20. I really don't see South in the top 25 this year. I hope the surprise me.
  21. Surprised you think South Laurel will be in the top 20 this year.
  22. Other than June Buchanan's game against Henry Clay do any of the 14th region teams play any of the state's top teams? I noticed Buckhorn is playing a couple of the better teams in the 13th region in Clay Co and Corbin.
  23. They had one of the best inside games last year but had a hard time handling the press after Miniefield was injured.
  24. Those are projected figures for the future. The estimated growth figures from the US Census Bureau for the period of 2000-2006 are: Spencer 37.1% Boone 26.5% Scott 24.4% Shelby 18.3% Bullitt 18.2% Gallatin County's growth was way down the list at 3.7%. Below is a link to the complete list. http://www.kentucky.com/news/state/story/144855.html
  25. Officially, the KHSAA commissioner makes the decision. The KHSAA askes the member schools to present a plan on where the tournament is held but the official decision is made by the commissioner.
