  1. I never seen Pursiful play. I am far far too young. Who would you take off my list to add Pursiful?
  2. 13th region- players in no particular order Wallace Jones - Harlan, UK 3 time All American, Olympic Gold Medal, NBA Bobby Slusher- Lone Jack, UK, Univ Cincinnati, Cumberland Frank Selvey-Corbin, Furman, NBA Jerry Bird- Corbin, NBA Nick Sanford- Cawood, LMU Phil Cox- Cawood, Vanderbilt Richie Farmer- Clay Co, UK Charles Thomas- Harlan, Minnisota, EKU Dickie Parsons-Harlan, UK Rodney Woods- Lone Jack, UT Head Coach- Bobby Keith (state championship, runner up) Assistant- Joe Gilly (state championship) Assistant- Billy Hicks (2 state championships, runner up) Assistant- Bernie Bickerstaff (25-30 year NBA coach and general mgr career) Assistant- Spider Thurman (started the Clay Co tradition)
  3. Coach Hicks told me last year when this came up that the locker room was sacred. Nobody but coaches and team members were coming in the SC locker room during pregame, team meetings, and half time. The MTV crew would have probably tried to create a controversy where none existed.
  4. Your probably right. But you have to remember Jones was All American three times, won an Olympic Gold medal and played in the NBA also.
  5. Your right. Jones would be 80 years old by now. So he may not be the best to come out of Harlan anymore.
  6. Jones made All American three times sharing the ball with Alex Groza (all american 47, 48, 49), Ralph Beard (all american 47, 48, 49), Cliff Barker, Dale Barnstable, Kenny Rollins, Jack Tingle (all american 46), Joe Holland, Jack Parkinson (all american 46), etc.. Somehow, I don't think sharing the ball with Todd Cox, Nathan Blanton, and Casey Lester would have bothered Jones much.
  7. AW was one of my all-time favorite KY high school players. Nobody ever played the game harder than AW. http://www.georgetownnews.com/articles/2007/07/03/sports/sports02.txt
  8. I can't believe I forgot Dickie Parsons. Gosh, I would have to put Rodrick Robinson in the top 15. He everything so well but was overshadowed by Miller's big scoring numbers. He had a very good career at LMU with Sanford and Buell.
  9. Harlan High School 1st 5 Wah Jones Charles Thomas Rodrick Robinson Maurice Byrd Ernie Trosper 2nd 5 Michael Jones Jeff Miller Todd Cox Charles Tabb Charles Rutledge 3rd 5 Clarence Major Bob Muse Johnny Williams Bobby Thompson Ronnie Morgan honorable mention Lawrence Body. Who did I forget HDE? The top 5 player everyone will question is Robinson. He only averaged about 14 points per game but he would always have double digit rebounds, lead the team in assists, and have a bunch of steals.
  10. I think this period extended past 86 through the early 90's. I think in 94 both Harlan and Corbin were rated #1 in the state at different points during the season. From the mid 80s through 94 the 13th was about as tough as any region in the state.
  11. Not even close. Thomas was a good one but Jones: * Set a national high school scoring record, scoring more than 2700 points during a period when teams scored about 40 points a game. * Was selected the "Most Outstanding Player in the NATION". * Lead his Harlan team to two state championship games, winning one. While Thomas was probably the second best at Harlan, his accomplishments don't compare to Jones'.
  12. Mackey could end up at the top of your list after next season.
  13. Cox did not have the physical tools to play in the NBA. He was a fantastic high school and college player. Hubbs was good but Cox and Sanford were light years ahead of Hubbs.
  14. Sanford went to Cumberland College and lasted about a week. He then went to LMU where he played for Phil Cox and scored over 30 points a game night in and night out for 4 years. From there I don't have a clue. I remember Cox's first game at Vandy. He came off the bench and scored 30 points in an upset win over Duke. He left Vandy as their all time leading scorer.
  15. One Cawood player that may have been overlooked by HDE is Allen Vaughn. Allen was a co-star the 76 team that went all the way to the regional finals before losing a close one to Clay Co. Before the 76 team, JACHS was considered a sure win on every team's schedule. I don't think JACHS had ever gotten out of the district until 76. I think Nick's brother Tony Sanford was a pretty good one that deserves to be mentioned. I think Eads as a second teamer may be a bit too high.
  16. And by the time he got to Cumberland his partying problems had caught up with him. I think he still had several games when he scored over 30 points for the Indians. The reason Rupp didn't keep Slusher around had nothing to do with basketball, it was conduct off the court.
  17. He was much better than Dickie Parsons in high school, and Parsons was a star at UK.
  18. Best player in Lone Jack history: Bobby Slusher- Parade All American (1957. Slusher was the only player om the southeast USA selected to the 15 member Parade All American team in 57), UK Scholarship, kicked off team by Adolf Rupp for stealing, transferred to U Cincinnati. got in trouble with alcahol and gambling, moved to Las Vegas. The last I heard he was living at the head of Gabes Branch in Harlan Co. (would make a good news story HDE). Slusher was easily an NBA star quality player but with no disapline. In high school Slusher would regularly score over 50 points in a game. His high game was 83 points. His senor year Lone Jack went 23-1 with their only loss at Lafayette. Slusher could very possibly be the best high school player ever in the 13th region. Other 13th region notables that were seniors in 57 were Dickie Parsons (Harlan, UK) and Carvin Bird (Corbin, UK). Runer-up. Rodney Woods.
  19. Cawood would be my "sentimental" favorite. Of all the great teams and players Cawood had, they never made it to the big show. The Trojans have been to the regional finals several times. This is their last chance. It would be a good way to lock the doors to the Cawood High School gym.
  20. You must have not been around when Phil Cox or Nick Sanford were playing. Hubbs was a good mountain high school player. Cox and Sanford were great players for anywhere. A complete different level.
  21. Cumberland was loaded with talent during the early 70s. Most of those teams were very balanced. Besides Larry Cockrel (73), some others that were stars for the Redskins during those years were: Dennis Griffey (70) Ronnie Alexander (71) Grady Wilson (71) Leon Brown (72) Roger Caudill (73) The best Cumberland team of that era may have been the 1970 team. I remember watching the 1970 team beat the Rodney Woods lead Lone Jack team by 30 in the regional semi-finals at Union College. Harlan was the regional favorite that year. The Dragons were lead by Maurice Bird (or Byrd) and had something like a 19 game winning streak but were upset by Evarts in the district tournament at Cawood.
  22. Gafney was not a great high school player. He was a fairly good high school player. He had two or three teammates on his high school team his junior year at Cumberland that were better. His senior year, Cumberland was terrible. Gregory had an absolutly fantastic career at Cumberland College. He was good enough to go mid level D1 (OVC).
  23. Evarts- Hershal Hicks Harlan- Wallace Jones Cawood- Phil Cox/Nick Sanford Cumberland- Garret Gregory Corbin-Frank Selvey Middlesboro-Lawrance Buell Oneida Baptist- Ben Franklin Clay County-Ritchy Farmer Lynch- Forest Pearson
  24. it looks like eastern Kentucky will own the bottom 8 or 10 spots on the top 25.
