  1. You know one that is a great one that seldom gets mentioned is John D Wilson at tiny tiny Red Bird Mission school. James A Cawood was pretty much at the bottom of the 13th region. JD took them from that to a 13th region finalist in a very short time. He took Red Bird to the region finals even though a couple of his best players had transferred to Clay Co.
  2. It depends on the deffinition of a top coach. Below are some criteria that may be considered. Overall record Longevity (great coaches build great programs not just great teams) State Tournament record Regional Championships Respected by former players Plays tough schedule year in and year out Kids improve throughout career Cares less about his popularity and does not kowtow to boosters etc. Everyone on this board is going to say his or her favorite coach is one of the states best and the coach he or she does not like is overrated. But sports is largely a numbers game, otherwise we wouldn't have scoreboards and every team would get a championship trouphy at the end of each year. Coaches should be rated by the numbers.
  3. I think a lot will depend on the results of the federal investigation of the GC school system. The investigation centers on if Hicks mid-year dismissal was in retaliation for Hicks testifying against the former principal in a civil rights investigation.
  4. Hatcher is one of Kentucky's top 8 or 10 coaches IMO. However, personally I have never enjoyed watching his teams play. They play a very deliberate style of play.
  5. Of course it is an advantage to play on your home court. How could it not be?
  6. I only watched Knowles play 4 times against North Laurel, Scott County, Lexington Catholic, and Ballard. From those 4 games I would take Knowles above all the guards except Walls and possibly Beckham.
  7. It may depend on the outcome of the federal civil rights investigation.
  8. Please reread my post. It says exactly what I am trying to say.
  9. I think Billy Hicks only had one technical foul all year. He must know just how far he can go.
  10. Is part of your post to point out that Scott County's schedule wasn't as tough as I think it was? You have downplayed their out of state wins. Is that the point?
  11. Galena finished as 4A State Champions in Nevada. There losses were to teams like Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, California), Weschester (LA), Domenques (Compton, California), Artesia (California) twice, St Johns (DC), amd Scott Co (Kentucky). Going 24-8 and being 4A state champions with this schedule is not too shabby wouldn't you say.
  12. Les Dixon of the Corbin Times Tribune predicted Ballard would win the Sweet 16. The writer that covers the 11th region for the Catspause Yearbook predicted Madison Central would win the 11th. These are two. I am sure there were others.
  13. I think where Log Mountain and I get this from is: 1. Your comment that Billy Hicks ONLY did what was expected of him. As if beating Reno Galena with the great Luke Babbitt (Ohio State), and Baltimore Mount Saint Josephs with Dino Gregory (Maryland) and Henry Sims was expected. 2. You have downplayed Scott County's once in a lifetime win over the #1 team in the nation because (a) in one poll they were only #2 and (b) Huntington was "disfunctional". 3. You seem to feel going undefeated against BY FAR the strongest schedule in the state was expected even though several writers did not predict SC to win the Sweet 16. A few predicted they would not make it out of the tough 11th region. Going undefeated in only happens about once every 60 years. 4. You are quick to point out one of their only two loses of the year. To say Scott County and Hicks did ONLY what was expected of them is absolutly ridiculous. One other thing I want to point out is Log Mountain is a Bell County High School fan and I myself live about 100 miles from Georgetown. But we both recognize the historic accomplishments of this basketball team. To not give this team and coaching staff the credit they deserve is nuts.
  14. From looking at a lot of previous post Westsider has a little problem giving any credit to anything associated with Scott Co.
  15. You are correct. Huntington was #2 in USA Today and was #1 in the other 6 high school polls.
  16. Wait a minute. Darius Miller was not voted one of the top 5 high school players in Kentucky by the AP voters? Come on. There is not a chance in the world Miller was not a top 5 player in Kentucky this year.
  17. Do the same journalist vote on the all state team that vote on the weakly AP top 10? If so there are only a handfull of voters, from mostly small-town papers. I would think the Lex Herald Leader and Louisville Courier Journal all state team would be more representive of the state. I think those are voted on by the head coaches of the state.
  18. According to the KHSAA web site, at the start of the 06/07 season there were only 3 active coaches with over 500 wins. The updated numbers for those 3 are: Billy Hicks 683 wins (26 seasons) Evarts (3), Harlan (3), Corbin (8), Scott County (12) Ron Beavers 682 wins (32 seasons) North Hardin Dale Mabry 676 wins (26 seasons) Pleasure Ridge Park Hatcher may be in the top 5 or 6 since he is now over 500. There are only 4 retired coaches that have won more games than the 3 coaches listed above.
  19. Do you know what Hatcher's record as a high school coach in Kentucky is? I am not really interested in the girls record or out of state record. The reason I ask is he may be the 4th or 5th winningest active coach.
  20. I would guess this gesture was just showing support and gratitude for UT for taking a chance on their hometown hero when UK and U of L would not. I would guess after Lofton graduates the Maysville crowd will be UK fans again,,,,,,,,, unless Miller goes to UT.
  21. Hatcher's record last 10 years. 2007 18-11 lost in first round of district 2006 29-6 dist champion, regional champion, Sweet 16 final-4 2005 18-10 district runner-up, lost in first game of region 2004 23-6 district champion, lost in first game of region 2003 17-11 lost in first game of district 2002 16-14 district champion, lost in regional semi-finals 2001 24-5 district champion, lost in regional semi-finals 2000 27-4 dist champion, regional champion, lost in first round of Sweet 16 1999 24-4 dist champion, lost in regional championship game 1998 26-3 dist champion, regional champion, lost in first game of Sweet 16 Total 202-74 (.732) district tournaments 15-3 (.833) 7 championships regional tournaments 13-5 (.722) 3 championships Sweet 16 2-3 (.400) 0 championships
