  1. These guys are the worst. I honestly can't believe I wasted as much of my life as I have being a fan.
  2. Mason County again had a big second half. At one point in the third, X went up by six and Stenger was having his way at the time. Pawsat hits a 3 and turns it into a 4-point play, mason gets a turnover on the other end and Middleton knocks down another 3. Turned into a 16-1 Mason County run. Stenger had 24, Middleton had 22 and both were their teams MVPs.
  3. They pretty much all play 20 regular season games. Last year Georgetown went 17-2 (I think one was cancelled due to weather) and won their division of their league (based on a 12-1 league record) during the regular season, then got upset in their second tournament game. I'd have to look it up, but I'm fairly certain in 2007 it went: 20-0 regular season (with 13-0 league record), 2 sectional wins, 2 district wins, 2 region wins, 2 state wins. Ohio's postseason is a mess to try to explain, but I grew up and played my HS sports there and covered most of Georgetown's run for the Ledger two years ago so I'll give it a shot. It goes sectional, district, region, state. Depending on how many teams are in your sectional or how the draw goes, you could have to play 3 games to get through, or your first tournament game could be a sectional final. When you get to the district it's basically the round of 64 and you play two games there, region is the round of 16 and you play two games there. When you get to state there are only four teams left. Of course they do this across four divisions and have four champions, kind of like how Kentucky has six classes in football. That's probably more than you were looking for but hopefully it helps out.
  4. He was all over the place tonight. Deflected at least 3 passes, one of which ended up getting picked off. Had the 90 yard kick return that got called back, then a 50 yard return on the next one to set up MC's first score.
  5. As a poll voter who puts far more time and effort than I probably should into making sure I make informed selections, I'll honestly say I don't have a clue what some of the others are thinking. Every week, I make a spreadsheet with every team ranked or getting votes in the AP Poll in each class and input records, where I voted them, Cantrall, Litkenhous, BGP rankings, their last game and next game among other things. I know that's probably a bit extreme, but I take my vote seriously and enjoy that kind of stuff anyway so it's no big deal. I don't expect everybody to go to the measures I do, but the results I see each week lead me to believe some voters aren't even trying. Every week, there are a handful of things that just jump off the page at me. The fact that Reidland gets beat by 70 and goes from unranked to receiving votes makes no sense to me. For whatever reason, the 2A poll seems to have more weird stuff going on than others, as last week Morgan County (at that point 0-5 and dead last in both the Cantrall and Litkenhous) was getting votes.
  6. Old record was 74, which he tied on the first touchdown of the game. He ended up missing one in the third quarter, so his record will stand at 76. Not sure how long the previous record stood.
  7. Let's give the guy a break. As a sportswriter, you couldn't pay me enough to write one of these things with the list format because you're never going to please anybody. Sure, you can load the list up with players from Mason and Clark and just as many people would be on here killing the guy for ignoring the small schools. Sure, he could have put Clark #1 and just as many people would be hammering him for putting the defending state champs second in their own region behind a team they beat by 17 and 23 last year. And unless you were driving up to Greenfield McClain all season last year, Zollo is still an unknown to most of us. I guess what I'm basically saying is that there are obviously more than 10 quality players in the 10th region, so it's impossible to put together a list of 10 without shorting somebody. And seriously, who really cares whether your team is first or second or tenth in the opinion of one writer in October?
  8. As ridiculous as it sounds, GCC really appeared to do everything in its power to keep the score down. Manchester doesn't tackle well, to put it mildly. GCC's starting tailback touched the ball 10 times and scored on 6 of them. Starting QB threw 8 passes and four went for TDs. They had pretty much called off the dogs in the early second quarter but couldn't help getting return TDs or handing it off to 3rd, 4th, 5th sting RBs up the middle and having them break away for touchdowns. At one point before the half, the fullback breaks what would have been a 50 yard TD but runs out of bounds. Gets called back due to holding, they run the same play again, the kid breaks it again for what would have been a 70 yard TD, runs out of bounds again and they kneel to run out the half. Based on their play calling, I think they were determined not to score in the fourth quarter, but how are you going to tell a kid who never gets to play not to retrun a pick 90 yards if he has the chance? They just kneeled on the PAT. To Manchester's credit, with only 19 healthy kids and no seniors, they have a few decent players on offense and usually get their share of points. Yesterday's first half was kind of a perfect storm in that their defense is never going to stop anybody but the O turned it over a bunch of times to make it worse.
  9. It's probably worth noting that this game was 84-0 last year.
  10. Gotta love what Portland is doing, not anything they're necessarily they're doing today but a good vision for the future.
  11. My favorites are Genesee Cream Ale and Yuengling but unfortunately I never get the chance to pick some up unless I'm on a trip so I always try to stock up. Also fell in love with some stuff called Big Wave when I was in Hawaii last winter but I know I'll never see it again. I'd also give an honorable mention to Fat Tire and Hudy Delight and I've been known to show up places with a 15 of Blatz just to turn some heads. When you get down to basics though, it's hard to knock the $3.29 sixer of Keystone tallboys for a Saturday of cutting grass and working outside the house.
  12. Well played. Pretty sure nothing I have to say about them can be posted on a family site like BGP though.

  14. Shawnee State in Portsmouth has been a 4 year school since the mid-80s. If I'm not mistaken, there's a juco named Shawnee in Illinois or someplace.
  15. Semis are Wednesday at 5:30 and 7:45. Finals Thursday at 6:30. The bottom half is indeed loaded.
  16. Monday 5:30 - Mason/Nicholas 7:45 - Bourbon/Scott Tuesday 5:30 - Harrison/Clark 7:45 - Campbell/St. Pat
  17. She hit the record breaker tonight at Mason County. Crushed it to straightaway center. The sport fence at the Rec Park is supposed to be 200 and she cleared it by a good 20-30 feet. It's also her 12th on the season which ties a state record.
  18. Gotta agree with this. But hey, what do Bob Huggins and Travis Ford know about hoops when we have experts like D-dawg and kwl 1977. For a kid like Trevor, who absolutely loves the game and wears it on his sleeve and is really refreshing to watch, it amazes me that so many people need to have such negativity.
  19. I'd say that the biggest factor in Hopson getting the POY over Miller was that votes had to be submitted before the state tourney.
  20. This post infuriates me for a variety of reasons. I had a rather lengthy response in which I spelled them all out but in the interest of not getting suspended as well as maintaining what civil relations I have left with my current employer (not to mention I make so little that the $15 reinstatement would put a severe cramp in my budget), I'm going to sleep on it.
  21. There may be more, but just from last night's roster: Ohio: Ken Frease - Xavier Chris Johnson - Dayton Anthony Hitchens - Akron Drew Spradlin - Elon Tom Pritchard - Indiana Kyle Rudolph - Notre Dame for football Kentucky: Correy Sorrell - NKU Adam Delph - UK (walk on) Everybody else undecided
  22. Setty actually started but went I think 0-8 from 3 and 0-9 overall. Really had a lot of pretty good looks considering there's no defense being played, just couldn't get them to fall. The last one he shot couldn't have possibly gone farther down in the bucket and rattled out, and by then he seemed pretty bummed out. It's a shame but that's how it goes when you're a shooter. If they played it all over again he could come out and knock down 7/8 or something. Couple other observations... You wouldn't tell by looking at the roster, but it seemed that Ohio just had that much more size inside, of course it didn't hurt that Frease is an absolute behemoth... I could barely keep up with scoring, let alone rebounds, but I'd venture to say Kentucky got killed on the glass... I'd been looking forward to seeing Hitchens after hearing about him from friends at home while he owned my alma mater the last few years and won a state title this year. The kid really came off as cocky and did an awful lot of jawing for an all-star game, but at the same time, a guy I'd love to have on my team. Relentless defensively and could get in your head pretty quick if you're on the opposing team... Both MVPs looked good (obviously, or they wouldn't be MVPs), Gagel knocked down some big time shots and Eargle looked really smooth for a 6-7 kid. He had one shot where (I didn't have the best angle but) it looked like the defender got a piece of it on the way up and he ends up shooting it left handed and sinks it from about 15'...
  23. Ohio won 92-86. Was tied at halftime, Kentucky actually comes out and takes a pretty big lead but lets it slip away. Ohio grabs a late lead and what had been a pretty exciting game goes beyond 2 hours while they shoot an ungodly amount of free throws over the last few minutes. Cierra Ricketts, who almost singlehandedly kept Kentucky in it with 23 points (21 in the second half) was Kentucky MVP. Dakeisha Mann, 17/8/5 was Ohio MVP. I'd post a box score but i have some stuff from the first half that doesn't add up and not enough energy to figure it out tonight.
  24. Ohio (113) Johnson 4 5-5 13, Frease 4 3-4 11, Aronhold 4 1-2 10, Morrow 2 0-0 4, Eargle 8 1-2 17, Chambers 5 2-4 12, Hobbs 3 2-2 10, Hitchens 3 2-5 9, Spradlin 3 0-0 8, Dummermuth 2 2-2 7, Moore 2 0-1 4, Rudolph 2 0-1 4, Pritchard 1 0-0 2, Davenport 1 0-0 2. Totals 44 18-28 113. Kentucky (89) Gagel 5 2-2 16, Henderson 3 0-0 7, Morris 1 3-4 5, Moorman 1 0-0 2, Edmonson 5 3-3 15, McGraw 2 2-2 8, Moses 2 3-4 7, Sorrell 1 3-5 7, Delph 2 2-2 7, Stepp 2 0-0 5, Pettit 2 0-0 4, Lee 2 0-0 4, Murry 1 0-0 2. Totals 29 18-22 89.
