I here Owensboro will probably be the team to beat in Western Kentucky. They return numerous talented starters where John Hardin has lost a lot of talent. BGHS may be down a litlle bit by BGHS standards. I think they loose the majority of their defensive starters especially linebackers and defensive backs. They may have the best running back duo in the state with Tevin Barksdale at TB and Lavance Anderson at FB. They also have to replace a three year starter at QB and lose two D1 recruits at wideout and TE. The Offensive line ought to be pretty impressive this year . All in all expect a OHS BGHS semifinal and wouldn't be suprised to see the Purples back at Papa Johns.

Just curious if any BGHS fans can confirm a rumor I heard. Went to watch BGHS play basketball on Wednesday and D.L. had a great game. Went yesterday and he wasn't playing. Several people at the game stated that South Carolina told him he had to drop the roundball this season. If that is so I think it's a shame for D.L. because he's a really talented roundballer as well. On the other hand I can see USC's position not risking injury and needing some serious time in the weight room.

I think Dragonfire nailed it on the head with this assessment and I also agree with the bad luck theory just having to meet three great teams three years in a row.

Coach Wallace was on our local radio station yesterday and was very complimentary of HHS. HE was most impressed with the athleticism of the offensive line. HE also stated he had seen very few teams with speed at every single position on the field like HHS showed. At the high school level their are usually one or two kids even on great teams that are a step or two slow. The radio show host finally had to ask who coach Wallace thought was the best team in the state. He diplomatically stated Trinity's offense was the best that they had seen by far and HHs had the best defense that they had seen. He wouldn't pick a winner but said it would be one heck of a game! Congrat's to the birds on a great season. Don't know if BGHS will make it to the finals next year but I wouldn't bet against them. The last three BGHS senior classes have been extremely athletic even by BGHS standards. They have alittle bit of a drop in talent until their current 8th grade class comes along and they are absolutely loaded with athletes. All I know is next years state champion is already working their hind ends off right now.

Yes, all my "purple friends" kids are out of district but they are still dear friends. If the county school system and the KHSAA don't have a problem with it I guess I shouldn't either. I vowe to never post again about where a kid should attend school based on where they live. Now a question about how game films are obtained from opposing teams. Do the coaches send the opposing coach only the films they want the other team to see or do coaches request what game film they would like to have. If I'm Dale, I want to see the John Hardin film. In my opinion JH had the best game plan to stop BGHS's well balanced attack. In particular how they took D.L Moore out of the game and how they put pressure on the quarterback. It was kind of like a controlled rush with kids staying in their lanes not allowing Steelman to run wild and make big plays but still providing enough pressure to make him think twice about passing. If I'm Wallace I want to see the LexCath-HHS film. LexCath offense and personnel are very similiar in balance and talent to BGHS. I thought LexCath passed the ball very effectively against HHS they just couldn't catch the ball. BGHS will catch the ball!

Hate is a pretty strong word. I actually have a lot of purple friends and do enjoy going to the games to support their kids. I am also a high school football addict and enjoy watching good football. BGHS plays the best football in western kentucky. I must admit my purple friends haven't been to happy when I predicted the final score to within 7 points in their last to state final appearances. Like I said earlier, I expect this to be a much closer game and feel the purples have the talent to win .

I have had a chance to see both teams play several times this year, BGHS a few more times than HHS. Here is how I would rate the two teams by positions. OFFENSE: Quarterbacks/ BG has a three year starter who runs and throws equally well. Steelman tends to thrive on making big plays when pass blocking breaks down. He also will run several Quarterback draws and a bootleg or two often for big gains. I'd say this position is about equal between the two teams. Receivers/ Bghs has the edge here with two D-1 recruits, a 6'6'' wideout and 6'5'' TE. Both are very hard to keep in check. The other two or three receivers don't get many opportunities to make plays but do a nice job of holding down field blocks and making catches when needed. Runningbacks/ Probably a draw between HHS and BG. BGHS has the usuall trio of outstanding backs with two power backs and a third shifty/quick back. All three catch the ball well and tend to get several passes per game usually as a safety valve in the flats. Offensive line/ Big advantage to HHS. Probably one of the best units I've ever seen. BGHS's O-line has improved greatly during the course of the season but will probably have difficulty with the Birds quickness. Kicking/ Punting/ Have to give a slight edge to HHS. BGHS has a very reliable extra point kicker (54 straight PAT'S) but has struggled with the few field goals that have been attempted. He will also kick the ball in the end zone about 50% of the time. Punting is equally scary for both teams, probably a product of offenses that rarely punt. DEFENSE/ Defensive line / HHS has the edge with their quickness and depth. Dale seems to be able to rotate at least six different players over three down lineman with no drop in talent. Linebackers/ edge to HHS although BGHS has one outstanding linebacker(Carpenter) who signed with Northwestern to play strong safety. At 5'10'' and about 195# he's extemely quick and aggressive but too small to play a D-1 linebacker. Defensive backs/ Probably a draw. Somewhat concerned about HHS pass defense especially with the size of BGHS's two D-1 caliber receivers. The big wideout goes both ways playing safety on defense. Sorry if that was a little long winded. If both teams play a perfect game( minimal turnovers,no huge special teams blunders or plays), I think HHS should win by 7 to 14 points. Everyone knows perfect games don't usually happen, but I just don't see BGHS holding HHS's running game to under 21 points. If BGHS has a weakness it's defending the run. On the other hand, I don't see BGHS scoring more than 21 on HHS's Defense although BGHS probably has the best passing game the Birds will have seen all year, and if the birds have a weakness on defense it's defending the pass. This should be a great game and if the birds should happen to not bring home number 17 I'm moving back to zip code 41075. I still haven't gotten over the loss in 1995 to the purples.

I can't recall which state championship it was but the game was played at EKU sometime in the mid 70's and we had won the game. Another NKY team played after us possibly Bellevue and I think I recall the cannon crew firing a few rounds of after Bellevue scores . I was too young to be drinking at the time so I think the cannon has been fired off for another northern kentucky team at least once.

I had heard from the father of a Bowling Green player that Paducah Tighlman had questions about the players eligibility well before the state championship. If this is so how does this all not get resolved before the player in question makes it to the state tournament? Sounds like the second place team was having trouble dealing with their second place finish. Hope Marshall County can appeal this succesfully.

Just curious if HHS has faced any 6'6'' wideouts with great speed and leaping ability like BGHS has. Besides pressuring the quarterback how do you contain a weapon like that at the highschool level? Your average highschool cornerback is usually about 5'9'' and a 165 pounds soaking wet. The poor kid who had the assignment last week was about a 5'6'' freshman and needless to say he had a long night. I think BGHS is more dangerous than in years past due their much improved passing game. They also have a 6'5'' division 1 TE and several other excellent wideouts to throw to. Add their usuall stable of talented running backs and that makes a scary package to stop.

They actually met in 95 with HHS scoring early in the fourth quarter but missed a 2 pt conversion to tie the game. After that it was all BGHS and they won by a few TD's.

Before last weeks games I probably would have made HHS a 2 touchdown favorite. I've seen all of BGHS's games with the exception of their loss to Trinity which may have been their best performance of the year. My info on HHS comes strictly through family that are very knowledgable and never miss a game so it's not first hand. Plan on seeing the HHS/Lexington Cath. game later in the year. BGHS is much improved on offense and have really opened things up as far as passing is concerned. At first I thought their O-line was a big liability but they have really come together the last few weeks. They also have a 6'6'' wideout that can pick his college that has been unstopable as of late. That being said , If HHS defense is as quick and as deep as I've been told they should be able to pressure Steelman to make some bad decisions. I also think Collinsworth may be able to contain their big wideout especially with a little help. Defensively BGHS does not appear nearly as dominant as they have in the past. They have given up large amounts of rushing yards against their better opponents (Boyle, Trinity) and feel HHS would be able to do the same or even better. I think the biggest factor in HHS's favor is depth. BGHS drops significantly at QB, O-line, D-line and linebacker if they should happen to suffer a few injuries at these positions. Hopefully both teams stay healthy but I think HHS can withstand the injury bug a little better. I still wonder if HHS would have kept BGHS from their first and only state title in 95 if HHS would not have lost their stud QB in the semis while destroying Tim Couch's Leslie County. I guess that's the beauty of having depth across all positions as it sounds HHS is mucher deeper than it has been in years past. All in all I think a BGHS vs HHS finals would be one heck of a game. I know the GURU has seen both teams play against their toughest opponents and can make a much more informed critique of the two teams. I would love to hear what he has to say.

Mrs. Haze I based my percentage on a Warren County education forum that occured several years ago when the county discussed limiting the amount of county students that they would send the matching state funds (approximately 3100$ per student) with the student if they decided to attend BGHS if they did not physically move into the city . At that meeting someone stated an exact number (somewhere around 50 out of 80) of BGHS football team lived in the county districts. As you stated the city and county mutually agreed on a certain number of students per year that could attend BGHS and the county would send the matching funds. I confess I do not know the exact number that are currently not living in the city school limits. Here are a few that I do know of (Steelman, Beard, Hughes , Howard, Smith, Williams,Sowell, Jackson, Sears,Austin Beard, Yates, Vanmeter,Wallace, Kafogalis. The only person I know in district is anderson but I'm sure there are several others in both categories. This is all perfectly legal according to the KHSAA and I'm just saying enjoy the advantage that you have. I actually really enjoy watching good football and that means Purples football. By the way your entire potential State Champion first five golf team members (Blann, Beard , Jaska , Kirby , and Fleenor)are out of district as well. Goodluck against TRINITY.

Gosh it gets old hearing the purple faithful talk about dominating the publics but getting waxed in the state finals by the privates. As best that I can tell BG has every advantage a private school has plus the bonus that warren county has no private high school to draw players from BG's county wide draw. Owensboro looses players to Ocath. Louisville publics loose players to Trinity and X. Lexington publics loose players to Lexcath and Lexchristian. Highlands to Newcath and Beechwood, Dixie and BooneCo. all have residents playing for CovCath. In Warren co. for just 165 to 175$ per year your son or daughter can choose to not attend your county school and go out of district to become a purple. Traditionally over 60 percent of BG's players are from out of district. How competitive would BG be without out of district players? My guess is not very. So please stop with the private /public whining and continue to compete as best you can against the best private and public competition in the state. Now that I have that off my chest after watching BG give up 390 yards to Boyle Co, I predict Trinity will win by at least 21 points. I did really like BG's new passing attack but I think that may go up in smoke as well if Trinity can put some pressure on BG's quarterback. MY prediction Trinity 28 BG 7.

I personally have no particular order of ranking but would place most northern ky. schools (HHS, COV CATH, AND DIXIE) and Eastern ky. schools especially Johnson central over any western ky. schools until a school out of the western part of the state can play a competitive game let alone win a state title game. I feel any of the above schools would have cruised through Bowling Green's competition to face Cov Cath in the finals and would have provided a much more competitive title game. HHS plays traditional western ky. power Hoptown during the regular season this year and may be a good barometer as to how strong football is in western ky.

Just curious as to how many Ft. Thomas kids play for Newcath? I grew up in Ft. Thomas in the 70's and 80's but don't recall hardly any of my friends including those who attended St. thomas or St. Catherine leaving the Ft. Thomas school district to attend Newport Catholic.

Bowling green implemented a whole new offense this season after several early playoff losses ,excluding last years loss in the finals. BG now will go to the shotgun with 3-4 wideouts and throw reasonably well if needed. The only problem is that they have played such poor competition until the last two playoff games I question wether or not they can pass against a strong defense like Covcaths. They do have a 6'6" wideout with good speed and hands that is hard to match up with. I still feel their passing game will be a nonfactor if covcath can pressure the qb like I think they will. I do know BG's defense will not stop Covcaths passing game. Still have to give BG credit for radically revamping their offensive in one year, at least now they have the ability to score quickly via the pass if they get behind early. Hopefully the coach from Ft. Thomas will do the same for next year.

predict cov cath by 2 tds or more. have seen both teams play and don't think bg has seen anything like covcaths passing game. bg has more team speed and d1 recruits but can't run outside without oline holding. bg has finally developed a passing game but feel covcaths defense will put too much pressure on steelman for passing game to be effective. also feel covcaths brutal schedule will also pay off in the end. this game will still most likely be the best game of the four finals.

drove 31/2 hrs from western ky. for my yearly nky hs. football fix. wow what a game athough my alma mater was on the loosing end. nothing compares to nky football and hope those who get to enjoy it on a weekly basis appreciate it. as for the game, haven't seen a cch D with that much speed in years. #26 and #30 were all over the field. return team must be really scary for dale to give your offense the ball on the 35 to 40 every drive???? both offensive lines were very impressive. sure wish dale would throw a 10 -15 yd pass and use that big tight end on occassion to spread the defensive a bit. guess when you can gain 5-7 yds at will running 4-5 different plays why change. dissapointed hhs defensive gave up 29 pts. hope coaches have a plan in the rematch for putting some pressure on the qb for round two or i fear the same result. thought both teams played , won and lost with class. love seeing opposing players help each other up after big hits. quess the jv squads haven't been paying attention to the upper classmen in this reguard. cch student body is the best and that's coming from a die hard birds fan. expect round two to be equally competitive just have to decide wether to give up my uk- vandy tickets to see the rematch. doesn't sound like much of a dillema does it? by the way, i've seen the purples play about half of their games and feel like either nky representative will be state champs provided no surprises from the mountains await. purples have 4 0r 5 true d-1 caliber players but still like the birds and colonels 22 best on the field overall. again what a game and well worth the 7 hr. round trip!!!

happened to watch the x vs bg game live. the x team playing that night did not look anything like the team that played against hhs. st. x had numerous drive stalling penalties, critical turnovers and looked very sluggish in general against bg. bg had one scoring drive of less than 10 yards after a st. x fumble inside the 10. otherwise bg's longest play from scrimmage (20yds) was on a bothched punt with the kicker running for his life. st. x played nearly a perfect game against hhs with no to's and very few significant penalties. even though the margin of victory was less against bg, i feel hhs gave st.x a much tougher test. I think hhs actually had over 300 yds total offense. after seeing both teams play in the past few weeks i think hhs has the stronger and more balanced team and will only get better with a much more difficult remaing schedule. vote hhs #1 for me!
