Bowling Green has been the dominant team in the West in the 5A/3A class recently. Is that going to be the case this year, or will graduation will hurt them? Is it JH's or someone else's year?

I here Owensboro will probably be the team to beat in Western Kentucky. They return numerous talented starters where John Hardin has lost a lot of talent. BGHS may be down a litlle bit by BGHS standards. I think they loose the majority of their defensive starters especially linebackers and defensive backs. They may have the best running back duo in the state with Tevin Barksdale at TB and Lavance Anderson at FB. They also have to replace a three year starter at QB and lose two D1 recruits at wideout and TE. The Offensive line ought to be pretty impressive this year . All in all expect a OHS BGHS semifinal and wouldn't be suprised to see the Purples back at Papa Johns.

It wouldn't be an OHS/BGHS semifinal would it? I thought with the restoration of cross district matchups that their game would be the regional final, rather than a state semifinal.

Owensboro will not be nearly as good this year as they were in 07. They lost the majority of their team to graduation. Bowling Green will be there. I think you have to look at either Christian County or Hopkinsville as the team that replaces Owensboro and plays Bowling Green for the 'region.' Both Hoptown and County didn't lose much to graduation, and are looking to have good seasons.

Christian Co will be the most talented team in D1, with Bgreen again taking D2 with relative ease...Owensboro loses alot on the defensive side, where they were the strongest and HopTown will be improved from last year, but, still a far cry from the teams they had back in the late 90s...I'd say BG still takes the region, but, Christian Co will definately be a quality team, likely a Top 6-8 team in state in there class...

JH will be in the State Semi-final, and has a great shot at Papa Johns. They did lose some great players, but they have the depth to reload this year. Not to mention their QB will be back (20 TDS with only 3ints/1200 yds). The question is, who will JH face in the Semi-final? Probably B.G.

John Hardin will be lead by Junior QB Alex Dingle (141/70 for 1175 yds/ 20 TD’s) has one year experience under his belt and will be surrounded by talented skill position players, demonstrated at times he could be a very accurate and proficient passer when given the chance. Needs to make quicker decisions with the lost of go to guy Mr. Denham. The running game will need to fill the void left by all everything RB Matt Denham (1588/16 TD’s). This will be done by seniors Elias Camper (871/13 TD’s) and Cameron Parker (476/6 TD’s). The Dogs will need to develop another receiver to compliment Senior Tim Marcum (22/397 7 TD’s) and a blocking TE. Speed will not be a problem for the Bulldogs with most skill positions running 4.6 or better 40s, and if the O line develops over the course of the year watch out 5A football.

 

Look to see the Bulldogs at Papa Johns playing Highlands for it all.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sounds like John Hardin will be very strong this year. My only comment is that while I always think that Highlands will win the state championship, I believe that CovCath probably has to be the favorite in the East at this point based on the number of returning starters.

I have not had the opportunity to see CovCath but I did watch Highlands play BG at Papa Johns last year. Walk away impressed by the program as a whole not many can compare with the history of the Bluebirds. John Hardin in time I think will be mentioned every year as a 5A favorite, they have the facilities and staff to make it happen.

And your post made it more so.

I think it will be the usual suspects in the west BG, JH, Owensboro and Christian Co. until someone beats these guys. Christian Co. if true that they did not lose much may be the team to beat early. They have to come to the dungeon to play Owensboro this year in the district game and that is never an easy task.

 

Did not get a chance to see JH last year but have in the past and they are usually pretty good year end and year out. I look for it to be the 4 team mentioned as Hoptown still has some work to do to be in the conversation.

 

I look for Owensboro to be better than people think they will be although they lost 23 seniors that played a very big part in getting the devils back to the front of 5A the boys coming up are no slouches and the JV and Freshman teams at Owensboro have not given many points in the last few years. I look for them to be very explosive and fast like the Owensboro of old but may be a year away from being a true contender.

 

I am going to call it Christian Co and BG for now and when the season starts it may change. One thing I do know is the kicking game in the west of 5A will be fun to watch this year with Max Oldham from BG going after some state records in his senior year and the sophmore kid Trey Cain from Owensboro to see if he can back up what he did last year as a freshman. These 2 are probably the best kickers in the state next to the Merrick kid from Bell Co. who is one step above these 2 right now.

I would not go that far. No QB, No TE, No WR all gone. The RBs are a plus for BG but they should definately be down from last year for sure. A squeaker against JH in the playoffs and No offense from Owensboro in the semis when BG turned the ball over the first 5 posessions last year. So I think it will be someone out of District 1. Christian Co. Hoptown or Owensboro.

 

Christian Co. the favorite early Hoptown has talent but young as well as Owensboro. Owensboro has speed and also returns All-state DB Yante Williams and a few LBs that will or should be all-staters this year so the defense for Owensboro is not dry from graduation. District 1 will be dominant for at least the next 3 years in my opinion.
