Bowling Green, early and late

Featured Replies

A post in another thread talking about how much better Bowling Green played against Trinity early in the season compared to how they played against Highlands late in the year has got me wondering... was the 2007 "early version" of BG different (and better) than the 2007 "late version," and if so, why? Did BG play much better against Trinity than against Highlands? How did the team change/not change during the season to account for this, if it is true???

They also did this against St.X a number of times too only to fall on their faces against Lex Cath and CovCath.

Hopefully we'll get PH, Mrs. Ph or some other BG fans to comment on their perspective. I know this will start a war, but its possible that Highlands this year and CovCath and LexCath the preceeding two years were comparable with X and T. Thus its not a matter of BG getting worse; rather the teams they played in the state championship were close, as good or better than X and T. Would be interesting to get some BG fans perspectives on that question (although we know what their coach thought about the comparison between T and Highlands-T had a better O and Highlands had a better D).

I have no issues with saying they were comparable. But I can tell you, in watching them against us this season and against you all that they didn't play with the heart that they did against us.

How much of that might have come from the TD as the half ended? Did they go into the locker room knowing it was over?

I know a few years ago I talked to one of the Owensboro players that played against the Birds in the championship game. He said they were pumped, knew they could win before the game started and then Highlands returned the opening kick off for a TD. He said you could feel it on the sideline that the players knew it was over.

Football is so emotional and such a game of mo, it is sometimes hard to overcome a quick or surprising blow.

I would be it had quite a bit to do with it. We didn't put them away until the 4th quarter which we dominated solidly. They seemed to lose quite a bit of steam then. I think that much of that comes down to coaching too, nothing against BG but having watched them get beaten badly 2 years running (I was not present for the 05 game), there seems to be something lacking in that locker room motivation-wise.

I don't think Trinity was as good early as they were late and thats the main thing. Trinity and St X always seems to get better as the season wears on and they get there rotations set. BGreen also had a game under there belt with Boyle Co and it was Trinitys opener. If anything, BGreen was about as consistent as could be thruout the year.. I think the style Trinity uses, plays more in the hands of BG then the style Highlands plays. BG didnt play that poorly against Highlands. Highlands played a flawless 1st half and managed to control the ball on long sustained drives and made some big 3rd and 4th down conversions and that last second TD before the half allowing them to go up 21-0 vs 14-0 was huge, because BG was getting the ball to start the 2nd half and a good drive to open could have turned that game.. BG only had the ball about 3-4 minutes of the half.. Trinity's pretty pass happy and it allowed BGs offense more time on the field to get in synch. BG probably did play a little better game against Trinity than they did against Highlands, but, I still think Trinity would have handled Highlands, had they played. Just too many offensive weapons, depth and overall talent...

I have a hard believing that their heart wasnt in the State Championship game but they came out swinging against Trinity in a meaninless game. My guess would be that is this was the case then BG felt like they saw a more likely opportunity in beating T than the Bulldogs, I meant the Bluebirds.

You can believe what you want, I know what I saw in both games.

Mr Sweeperboy, Please come to the Office.

This was the State Championship game. Don't tell me they played with less emotion and heart. C'mon, that's just plain ignoramous. Maybe, just maybe Highlands is better than the other team BG played. I "do" believe that!:p

I'm thinking BG played with as much or more heart in the championship game than they did against T in the early season game. I just believe BG had an easier time moving the ball against the Trinity defense than against the Birds D. I've seen the BG Trinity game on tape. BG ,at times, moved the ball at will on the Trinity Defense. BG never got into that kind of rhythm against Highlands. IMO, Highlands had a tougher defense than Trinity.

I can see that, and as has been said Highlands style of offense didn't give them time on the field the way ours does. Even so, I know what I saw in how they played. I stand by what I said, really I feel that comes down to coaching. The fact that they have laid an egg 3 years running says something about their preparation.

I call it more bad luck than anything...All 3 of BGs losses in the finals were to teams that have been called there best ever. I think alot of people would put this years Highlands team against some of there other great teams. You don't get a Top 20 national ranking without being very good and alot of those past great teams can't say that.. I believe the 06 CC team was the best CC team of there history. Alot of folks in the know, feel the same way. In 05, Lex Catholic was absolutely loaded with offensive firepower and athleticism and I believe there best ever. I definately think they were better than this years version. I really have no idea about the coaching staff of BG, but, I do believe they were unfortunate in the fact they had to play these particular teams these last 3 years. It reminds me alot of Mayfield in the late 80s and early 90s, when they had outstanding ballclubs that could have won with those teams in most years, but, Danville just happened to have some of there best teams ever at the same time...

I have a hard believing that their heart wasnt in the State Championship game

I didn't say that, I was just wondering if the end of the half TD may have broken their back. (heart) As stated before, they had held the Birds down pretty well. They were only down 14-0, getting the ball to start the third. Could it have been a here we go again moment as they went to the locker room?
