BGHS is trying very hard to be mentioned among the state's elite. If you listen to many coaches, they're already there. BGHS might have lost all three of their championship appearances the last three years, but at least they were there. Only two other programs can say that, and they're Trinity and NCC!

 

It is extremely unfortunate that some have only one measure of a successful program, and that's how many state titles they have won. Anything else brands them as a loser. For instance, Lone Oak was 14-0 heading into their disaster with LexCath. To those people, the Purple Flash might as well have been 1-14. I'm sorry, but they worked very hard for 14-0, including a heart-stopping 38-35 win over an outstanding Warren East team in the semis.

 

Ask St X and Trinity if they think that BGHS is a loser. In the second St X game, BGHS was far from full strength, but they lost by only 15-7. They went into the game with Christian County the following week with no less than seven starters out with injuries, yet they pulled out an exciting three overtime win over a fine Colonel team.

 

It is unfortunate that BGHS has been saddled in a hopelessly weak district the last several years, but they must play them or they're not eligible for the playoffs. There are also a lot of programs that won't play BGHS...so BGHS can only do so much to put together a quality schedule where they're tested practically each week. I'm also not in favor of the Purples scheduling their open date in conjunction with Fall Break, but that's the extended school calendar for you. It's a tremendous disruption in work habits, and BGHS, unfortunately, usually comes out flat after that.

 

And, once again, I can not overemphasize the fact that the early postseason in the west resembles a Quisenart! These are old and heated rivalries, where grandfather and grandson have something in common. BGHS and Paducah Tilghman (when they were both in 3A) have split the last 22 games of the series. BGHS was 0-19-2 in the first 21 games of this series! Owensboro and Hopkinsville similarly built up big leads in those rivalries until BGHS was able to start beating those old rivals. Warren Central and Franklin-Simpson were in the mix as well. In the 1990s, you didn't just win Region One...you survived it, and you hoped that you were not physically and emotionally spent in order to advance in the playoffs. 1995 was a very special year at BGHS, and that was truly a great football team...not just because they won the school's only title to date with a perfect record, but it is the only season in school history where the beat Owensboro, Paducah Tilghman, and Hopkinsville in the same season!

Very well said...That ole West Ky Conference in the 60 & 70s really was a war each week. Murray, Mayfield, Madisonville and a few others also had some very, very good teams back then.

They were not a very good team but had a very good record by virtue of playing some extremely weak competition. Ownesboro, JHardin and BG would be put to a real test by both Boone and Dixie too. Sure BG is a good team and has been for three years now, but they have NOT been a great team any of those three years. They got the the finals based on playing on the weaker side of the bracket. Chances are, if they were in the other half of the bracket, they lose in the semis or before all three years. Last year, Cov Cath, Lex Cath or Highlands would have beaten the Purples in the finals.

Owensboro beat Boone Co 14-3, while the Purples beat Owensboro 35-13 despite five early turnovers. The last time I checked, Boone Co is 6A anyway. Also, despite having deserved winning a title or two, Boone Co has never won a state title. And Dixie has never even played in one yet. This year, Highlands was definitely in the weaker bracket, and got to play all their 1-4 round games at home, while BGHS had to go to E-town to play #3 John Hardin and to the Dungeon to play the #4 Owensboro Red Devils, once again an old and heated WKC rivalry. I called it a "Murderer's Row" long before it materialized! The Purples were going to have to play #1, #3, and #4 in order to win the 5A title, and not one single game at home. The guys had to come from behind to beat John Hardin and had to overcome five early turnovers to beat an old rival in another. Highlands came up with a great gameplan and the players implemented that gameplan. Pretty hard to beat a team when it's constantly converting on third and short and keeping your offense off the field. And again, BGHS, NCC, and Trinity were the only three teams to make it to the title game the last three years in a row. Never mind the fact that BGHS lost all three...at least they were there!

I don't think anyone called them losers. They are definitely not losers. You are correct that Highlands had the easier side of the bracket this year. But, that being said, the way they dominated BG in the title game would suggest that the Birds would have walked through the other bracket as well. The Purples are a Good team, make that a very good team. But they are not a great team. Great teams do not get dominated when the chips are on the line.

 

And last season, the way they were handily beaten by Cov Cath, I stand by my statement that both Highlands or Lex Cath would have also beaten the Purples in that title game.

Personally, I don't think Lex Catholic would have beaten them this year or last year and I don't believe Highlands would have beaten them 2 yrs ago, and I don't believe CC would have beaten them this year or 2 years ago, but, thats all speculation cause we'll never really know. We can all make empty claims but it plays out like it does and anything other than that is just a guess. I believe in 05 they were the 2nd best team, 3rd best team last year and 2nd best this year, but like I said, who knows. The only thing for sure is they have 3 runnerup trophies in there case..

As far as 2005 season goes, CovCath lost in the playoffs at LexCath 42 - 39. The Knights were very much on the ropes in that one. LexCath beat Bowling Green 3 weeks later by a score of 49 - 21.
