Personally, I have always felt that Bowling Green is as prepared as they're going to be at the beginning of the year. BGHS has a great offseason program, and good development in spring and summer practice. The team you see at the beginning of the year tends to be the team you see at the end. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think they buck the trend of teams that improve as the year goes on. Thus, when they play teams at the beginning like X and Trinity that improve as the year wears on, they look more impressive than they may against the finished product by the state finals. That's just my personal opinion on the matter. One could argue it's the ease of which they move through the rest of the season as teams don't step up and challenge them, or sometimes that teams that they thought might push them (like a Warren Central), don't.

I finally got to see the taped game on Insight Cable here. BGHS didn't play all that badly...they were simply getting their offense kept off the field by a great Highlands gameplan. As I said before, the best defense is a good offense. It is tough to stop a well-drilled offense on third and short almost constantly. This kept the Highlands defense fresh and they were quick and able to disrupt BGHS's timing...they hardly ever got their timing down. That was fatal to the Purples' chances. Had Steelman been able to get his rhythm going, it would have been a much closer game. Alas, that didn't happen, and Highlands earned the brass ring with a great gameplan and the personnel to carry out that plan.

 

There's another factor here too. BGHS played two tough games on the road before going to Louisville, against #3 John Hardin (a GREAT team in its own right) and at the Dungeon against old WKC rival and #4 Owensboro. It wouldn't surprise me if the Purples were somewhat physically and emotionally drained after those two games! Ryan Wallace was HUGE in preserving the win against JH on both sides of the ball, and the Purples had to overcome five first half turnovers (four in the first quarter alone) against OHS.

 

Something ironic: BGHS dropped three in a row, one each to CovCath and one to Highlands. In 1987-89, Paducah Tilghman also lost three in a row...two to CovCath and one to Highlands!

 

I'm still very proud of the guys and the staff. I'd go to the ends of the earth with them. I would have given anything for my teams (1974-76) to have the same accomplishments that these past three Purple contingents have had! And I'm going to tell each one of them that when we have our Football Banquet next month!:thumb:

I call it more bad luck than anything...All 3 of BGs losses in the finals were to teams that have been called there best ever. I think alot of people would put this years Highlands team against some of there other great teams. You don't get a Top 20 national ranking without being very good and alot of those past great teams can't say that.. I believe the 06 CC team was the best CC team of there history. Alot of folks in the know, feel the same way. In 05, Lex Catholic was absolutely loaded with offensive firepower and athleticism and I believe there best ever. I definately think they were better than this years version. I really have no idea about the coaching staff of BG, but, I do believe they were unfortunate in the fact they had to play these particular teams these last 3 years. It reminds me alot of Mayfield in the late 80s and early 90s, when they had outstanding ballclubs that could have won with those teams in most years, but, Danville just happened to have some of there best teams ever at the same time...

 

 

I agree with this post completely. CovCath last year had the most complete team I've ever seen them have. Solid O line, a qb that by year end had become very smooth and polished, nice running backs and with Sutton and Bovard, outstanding receivers. On D, solid D line, very good lbing corps led by Flynn and Geisen, and very good D backs with Brown and Castanada. LexCath the year before was also the best LexCath team I've seen. Having a qb like Justin Burke made that O very good. I believe Dale, having experienced what problems a very good running qb causes a defense, was influenced in his qb thinking. I think that that game had a lot to due with Dale's decision to go with Clay Cecil as his qb the next two years as opposed to a pure passing qb. And of course, Highlands had one of its better, most complete teams this year. No superstars, just extremely solid at every position.

I think Dragonfire nailed it on the head with this assessment and I also agree with the bad luck theory just having to meet three great teams three years in a row.

I know a few years ago I talked to one of the Owensboro players that played against the Birds in the championship game. He said they were pumped, knew they could win before the game started and then Highlands returned the opening kick off for a TD. He said you could feel it on the sideline that the players knew it was over.

We did the same thing to Shaun Alexander and Boone Co. In 1994, then we scored again, it was 14-0 before they realized that the game started.

Sorry guys but I am not buying the bad luck theory. I just think that NKY plays some of the best if not the best football in the state. I know HHS and CovCath has owned the 3A and now 5A market for what about the last 10 yrs or so and unless their is another realignment in the near future it will probably stay the same. If there is any bad luck then its BG falling into the same classification as HHS and CovCath. What you just said makes no sense...Read the threads after the Highlands/BGreen game as well as the ones from the past 2 years. On numerous occasions, these 3 teams were deemed there best teams ever. If you believe NKy is that much dominant, then why isn't Boone or Ryle dominating in 6a, or how in the world could a lowly Wky team like Ft Campbell beat the almighty Breds and by the way, imo, that wasn't an upset at all and for that matter, if NKy were that much better, how in the world did Lex Cath knock both of them out 2 years ago. When you mention NKy, it was my understanding those 2 teams are from NKy, are they not? When someone makes a claim that a particular area plays better football, that would, imo, count the entire area, not just a few teams. Now if you want to retract that to a few elite programs, I may be more inclined to agree with you. It just seems NKy wants to make there area the premier area while in reality, riding a few teams coattails.

You name an area that plays better football than Campbell and Kenton counties at all levels...You can't there isn't one. There are now three teams that will be at the top or close to the top of their respective classes... So three out of the six classes are well represented by two counties....:dancingpa:dancingpa

Noone is disputing Highlands, CC, Beechwood and NCC..They're very solid programs, but, it's my contention that just because these teams are premier programs within the state, has nothing to do with where there from, but, more to do with there individual programs. Every area has premier programs but that doesn't make there area any better than any other. To me, it says more about these particular teams and thats it.
