I think this is a big consideration. T is the largest, or just about, in their class while Highlands has consistently played up in class with the same success. I certainly don't mean to diminish Trinity and I would consider them one of the best two football "dynasties" in the state. Trinity plays an incredible schedule every year and a case could be made for either team.

The stats make it look like a pretty closely contested game. I tend to agree that these teams were very evenly matched last year and NewCath prevailed because of a senior laden squad with good leadership. Caldwell County will certainly be the favorite in 2013. The Sindelar kid is a stud and I believe he has all of his receivers returning. With this said, NCC has a very tough road to a repeat.

This will be an outstanding race! The regional 800m looked like a NASCAR race with rubbing and bumping all the way around.

I would have to go with Schuler from St. Henry, Bray from Lloyd and Luther from Newport for the best jumpers in the last 15 years or so.

Rob Detzel is a CovCath grad and he coached NCC. Other than him, you are pretty spot on and would need to go back quite a way to find a non-NCC alum as the coach. Gary Schulte is St. Thomas grad and he is likely the last non NCC alum prior to Detzel.

Don't forget Stephen Brooks on the offensive line and likely at LB on defense. Would love to see Neff playing a pulling guard spot on offense to utilize his athleticism. I think the defense can be pretty effective with those already mentioned and Calvin Moore.

The departing senior class had quite a few contributors and was very deep. The Breds return some nice interior line pieces and some experience on defense. Franzen, Smith, Sutkamp and Donnelly all return and will fill offensive spots. They will certainly have enough to be very competitive in and out of their AA class. I am interested to see what happens with the QB spot but would be more than shocked if Pangallo was in the mix. Why would he come back to football?

I would be very surprised if Tim looked at working the girls' state tournament as anything less than an honor.

Not that there won't be more prestigious offers, but there are a lot of things to consider. Although Xavier may not be at the same level as a Kentucky or maybe a Big 10 school every year, it might be awful nice to give friends and family the opportunity to drive 15 minutes north to see half of his schedule!

Kids may play a sport as a freshman and choose not to continue past that year for a variety of reasons. They may be looking to see where they fit in talent-wise and what type of playing time they could expect moving forward as an upper-classman. They may be looking to see what HS football is all about. I would venture to say that HS football at NCC, or any high school, can be siginificantly different than what freshman had experienced up to that point with FTJFL, middle school or Red Devil football. Playing a fall sport like football also allows kids to meet classmates before school starts and can make the transition to HS a little less intimidating. Students may find that they would rather be involved in other school activities such as drama, art, etc. that wasn't available in grade school and decide not to continue playing a sport in order to explore different things. With that being said, there could be a number of reasons any of these freshman choose not to play football as sophomores. it doesn't need to mean that there is an anti-football tilt in the basketball program.

Not Holmes. They played in a cracker box until the new facility was opened in 1967. Ludlow has an old gym in their school so I would imagine the one they use now was probably built in the 60's or early 70's. NewCath and CovCath date back to at least the 50's. How about Bellevue? When was Ben Flora opened?

Many of the NCC basketball players also play a fall sport, just not all of them play football. McDonald, Seibert, Dupont, Bueter and Devoto all played golf. Haas, Franzen and Gray played football and Freppon played soccer. With Pangallo playing baseball, doesn't that leave only Schulte, Rawe, Verkamp and Dawson as "Basketball Only" athletes? Does Weyer play baseball also?

I agree that the tournament may not have been initiated for schools with enrollments of 600 or more. But to say this should be exclusively for the schools that can't complete in the districts/regionals is silly. Brossart, NCC & Holy Cross all have enrollments that put them solidly in the middle of the field included in the ALL A. They shouldn't be excluded simply because they can compete for a regular regional title on a somewhat regular basis. If Brossart can win the 10th All A title every year with their 400 students-more power to them! Same goes for NCC & Holy Cross!

The second angle shows it is clearly a travel. It also shows him removing his jersey while on the court, isn't that a technical foul?

Didn't Highlands also have a Blasingame (maybe from Ludlow, or was it Walton) on the team in these same years?
