I was just being a touch modest when it came to including Beechwood and NCC with Trinity and Highlands, because quite frankly, they're not in the same league. What I was simply stating that at the beginning of the season, each team sets their goals according to their personnel and recent history. Based upon that, I would imagine that anything short of a state championship for Trinity, Bowling Green, Highlands and Mayfield would likely equate to a disappointing season. Although I'm sure NCC and Beechwood both have set a goal of another state championship for this season, I wouldn't label the season a disappointment if they lost to Caldwell County and Mayfield in the playoffs.

Well, because NCC's perennial state title run is relatively still new and Beechwood's recent state title hopes seem to be a little out of reach. During the 90's Beechwood would have been at the top of this list.

I agree with this 100%. Each team starts the season with a set of goals used to define what a successful season would be. All schools except 6 throughout the state will end the season with a loss and that loss does not equate to an unsuccessful season. Schools like Highlands, Trinity, Bowling Green, Mayfield and to some extent NCC and Beechwood set their goal at winning the state tournament. Other programs may set goals that are more in line with their tradition or what the anticipated talent pool is for a particular season. It appears to me that Gallatin may have already accomplished most of what they would have set out to do this season. They finished 4th in the district last year and turned that into a 1st place finish this season. They have amassed a 10-2 record so far this year, had a clean sweep through district play, beat a pretty solid Bellevue team as well as three other NKY teams in Holy Cross, Ludlow and Brossart. To be playing in the regional final is a very good accomplishment for any team and I applaud Gallatin for their successful season. This week should be fun for the players, coaches, parents and whole school just as VOR states. Getting to host the regional final should be exciting and I hope an enjoyable experience for the whole community. Good luck to the Wildcats this week!

Railsplitters would have been a cool nickname for a school in the Hodgenville or Elizabethtown area. Villa Madonna - prior to being the Blue Lightning or Vipers they were the Vixens with a fox for a mascot. They were an all girl school then. Bracken County - The story I had been told regarding the Polar Bears had something to do with the location of the first gym, or where the basketball team practiced. The players had to walk across a big open field to practice and people would say "There go the Polar Bears across the snow". I don't know if there is any truth to that or not. War Horses is a pretty cool nickname in the state of Kentucky. I'm fond of Thoroughbreds as well because of the horse racing tradition in the state. Anyone know why Harrison County spells their nickname Thorobreds? The Harrison women are Fillies I believe and that's kind of cool too.

I'm sure this has been done in the past and I'm not sure that the football forum is the correct place, but I wanted to see thoughts on what people like as school nicknames. Personally, I like nicknames that are either somewhat unique or have a specific tie to the school itself. I'm not big on Tigers, Bulldogs, Wildcats, Cougars, Eagles etc. but prefer the uniqueness of RedHounds, Blackcats, Briar Jumpers and Blue Tornado. I like that the Big Trains have a specific tie to the city of Silver Grove. The Shamrocks are obviously a play on the Holy "Trinity" and I believe there is a story regarding the Polar Bears of Bracken County. What other nicknames relate specifically to a school or are unique in the state?

I would be surprised if this were close. Maybe not necessarily a high scoring game, but if the Bearcats can't throw effectively, they'll have trouble moving the ball. I'll say Breds by 20. Good luck to both teams.

Unfortunately, that loss to Gallatin has NCC looming in the semi's rather than regional final. I think the Walton/Lloyd first round matchup and the anticipated Gallatin/Newport semi-final matchup could be very good games.

Good point, but that was 9 weeks ago. In the last three weeks Newport has beaten Lloyd, Holy Cross and Holmes. With Holmes beating Walton and Lloyd handling Gallatin pretty easily, it appears that the first round regional games could all be pretty good. What happened to Walton vs. Gallatin? If I had to pick, I would have Newport in the regional final but it is certainly a toss-up between them and Gallatin.

I might have Newport ahead of Gallatin but I guess we'll see in two weeks.

Seriously? I can't imagine that playing Roger Bacon, Moeller, St X., Elder LaSalle, et al, in the early 70's is anywhere close to comparable as playing Holy Cross, NCC, Newport, Lloyd not to mention Betsy Lane, Eminence, Caverna, Middletown Christian and Bracken County today. I don't think the question was asked to compare Brossart's early success to NCC's early success. But rather to ask about the sustainability of Brossart's football program as it exists today. I wish the current senior class of Brossart football players had experienced more success, especially in their junior and senior campaigns. Everyone knew going in that the early years would be full of challenges but this senior class really presented an opportunity to grow the program into a much more stable situation. The current junior class has a number or athletes that would have helped the program tremendously had they stayed involved. That may have been enough momentum to find enough traction to improve the program. Truth be told, a comparison to Holy Cross' early program would be a much more apt comparison because both programs began in the same era and are very close in size.

I like Sindelar quite a bit. I think his running ability sets him apart.

I'm not sold on Holy Cross' improvement. A convincing victory over Brossart team doesn't point to improvement. Two weeks ago they were thoroughly handled by Scott. I think Lloyd controls the line on both sides of the ball, makes time consuming drives and scores often. Beal gets loose a couple times to keep it relatively close but I'll take Lloyd by 14 points 27 - 13.
