EQUUS GREVYI Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I'm sure this has been done in the past and I'm not sure that the football forum is the correct place, but I wanted to see thoughts on what people like as school nicknames. Personally, I like nicknames that are either somewhat unique or have a specific tie to the school itself. I'm not big on Tigers, Bulldogs, Wildcats, Cougars, Eagles etc. but prefer the uniqueness of RedHounds, Blackcats, Briar Jumpers and Blue Tornado. I like that the Big Trains have a specific tie to the city of Silver Grove. The Shamrocks are obviously a play on the Holy "Trinity" and I believe there is a story regarding the Polar Bears of Bracken County. What other nicknames relate specifically to a school or are unique in the state?
Jumper_Dad Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Old Ferguson High School in Pulaski County had War Horses as a Mascot! I haven't seen another school with that name.
jpa2825 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 There is a school in FL with the nickname of "The Hobos."
Getslow Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 The Louisville Collegiate School's boys teams are called the Titans, which is pretty ho-hum. But they call their girls' teams The Amazons, which is awesome.
gchs_uk9 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I always thought the Owensboro Catholic ACES was pretty cool. Cloverport, or Frederick Fraize, depending on what you want to call their school, is also the Aces.
Harry Doyle Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Nicholas County, the Blue Jackets. Danville Admirals Mason County Royals I also like the non traditional, yet not off the wall nicknames: Patriots, Gators, Hawks, Panthers, etc. You don't hear a lot of those ^^.
gchs_uk9 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I also like the non traditional, yet not off the wall nicknames: Patriots, Gators, Hawks, Panthers, etc. I can't think of anyone in Kentucky that is the Gators besides Greenwood. Is that correct? Also, was there any reason for why Greenwood was named the Gators? Obviously the school isn't in a swamp. And it opened in 1990, which is a little before the University of Florida had all of their football success. I've always been intrigued.
gchs_uk9 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 An oldie-but-goodie was Villa Madonna, who were long called the Vipers before switching over to the Blue Lightning a few years back.
JokersWild24 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 There are some uhhhhmmmm…. interesting ones here in Texas. People were talking about the Redskins debate in my office recently and one girl told me that one of the schools here has what has to be possibly one of the most racist mascots I've heard of… the Robstown Cotton Pickers. Robstown was known for it’s cotton production, and despite any negativity others may associate with the cotton picker, the school still represents their mascot with pride explains Robstown secretary Patricia Moreno. “We’re the only ones who have it,” Moreno said. “We’re very proud of it.” Another one that sounds bad, but really isn't when you understand it is the Hereford Whitefaces (Whiteface is a breed of cattle and Hereford is in the middle of "Beef Country"). Possibly the most sexist name on the list: the Roscoe "Playboys". Last week, I was in New Braunfels for Wurzfest (a German festival that celebrates the city's heritage); interestingly enough, their high school's mascot is the Unicorns. While not known for the most fierce Winter seasons, the Winter "Blizzards" is a fun name. Mesquite, Texas also has some fun with the Mesquite "Skeeters" (I don't know if they run out to Little John and the Eastside Boys though). I've seen a team named the Calhoun Sand Crabs, but the town the school is located in is Port La Vaca, so the mascot fits in with the Gulf coast theme. Getslow Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 St. Francis in downtown Louisville are the Wyverns. Pretty great. I've also long been a fan of the Manual Crimsons as a name. Centenary College in Louisiana actually calls their teams the Ladies and Gentlemen.
mcpapa Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 High school I graduated from (in MD) mascot was Gophers.
mcpapa Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I always felt kinda sorry for female athletes from Georgetown (OH) HS. The Lady G-Men.

Getslow Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I always felt kinda sorry for female athletes from Georgetown (OH) HS. The Lady G-Men. I hate when schools name their girls or women's team the "Lady" anything. Drives me crazy. When I worked for the newspaper in college, we actually had an entry put in the style guide that clarified that you are never to refer to the womens' teams the "Lady Flyers"; they're simply the "Flyers."
