Would that be Glen Burnie High?? I played against them in high school (I'm from Delaware).

Years ago I watched an Illinois high school basketball game.

 

It featured the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes.

I can't think of anyone in Kentucky that is the Gators besides Greenwood. Is that correct? Also, was there any reason for why Greenwood was named the Gators? Obviously the school isn't in a swamp. And it opened in 1990, which is a little before the University of Florida had all of their football success. I've always been intrigued.

 

I was in BG at the time and I could be wrong but I think it was voted on. I'll see if I can find out.

Does someone know how Bracken County came to be the Polar Bears? Seems like that question has been asked and answered, but I can't remember the answer.

 

Maybe All In can tell us if he's not too busy trying to find a free parking spot somewhere.

I can see why "Cotton Pickers" might be offensive but I think it is a pretty cool nickname, so long as their mascot isn't a slave or something similar.

 

I think the problem is that it's deep in South Texas and the imagery is given connotation with migrant workers and the associated hot button issues, which probably has a lot to do with the prinicipal's quote "nobody else likes it".

A lot of of folks have always poked fun of the nickname of Bowling Green High (What's a Purple?) Purple was (maybe still is) the color of the first place ribbon that you would win in a competition. The Bowling Green "PURPLES" took their nickname to signify their goal of finishing in first place in all their endeavors. Random fact

There are some uhhhhmmmm…. interesting ones here in Texas. People were talking about the Redskins debate in my office recently and one girl told me that one of the schools here has what has to be possibly one of the most racist mascots I've heard of… the Robstown Cotton Pickers. Robstown was known for it’s cotton production, and despite any negativity others may associate with the cotton picker, the school still represents their mascot with pride explains Robstown secretary Patricia Moreno. “We’re the only ones who have it,” Moreno said. “We’re very proud of it.”

 

Another one that sounds bad, but really isn't when you understand it is the Hereford Whitefaces (Whiteface is a breed of cattle and Hereford is in the middle of "Beef Country").

 

Possibly the most sexist name on the list: the Roscoe "Playboys".

 

Last week, I was in New Braunfels for Wurzfest (a German festival that celebrates the city's heritage); interestingly enough, their high school's mascot is the Unicorns.

 

While not known for the most fierce Winter seasons, the Winter "Blizzards" is a fun name.

 

Mesquite, Texas also has some fun with the Mesquite "Skeeters" (I don't know if they run out to Little John and the Eastside Boys though).

 

I've seen a team named the Calhoun Sand Crabs, but the town the school is located in is Port La Vaca, so the mascot fits in with the Gulf coast theme.

Some others I remember in Texas (especially West TX): Pampa Harvesters, Spearman Lynx, Lewisville Farmers, Plainview Angry Red (aka Bulldogs), Amarillo Sandstorms (Sandies), Palo Duro (Amarillo) Dons, Muleshoe Mules, Monterey (Lubbock) Plainsmen.

 

I remember traveling thru Hereford and touring a feed lot that held (I was told) 150,000 head of cattle. I had never seen that many cows in my life. Appropriate that it would be in Hereford, TX.

Railsplitters would have been a cool nickname for a school in the Hodgenville or Elizabethtown area.

 

Villa Madonna - prior to being the Blue Lightning or Vipers they were the Vixens with a fox for a mascot. They were an all girl school then.

 

Bracken County - The story I had been told regarding the Polar Bears had something to do with the location of the first gym, or where the basketball team practiced. The players had to walk across a big open field to practice and people would say "There go the Polar Bears across the snow". I don't know if there is any truth to that or not.

 

War Horses is a pretty cool nickname in the state of Kentucky. I'm fond of Thoroughbreds as well because of the horse racing tradition in the state. Anyone know why Harrison County spells their nickname Thorobreds? The Harrison women are Fillies I believe and that's kind of cool too.

Story I heard about how Highlands became the Bluebirds was that they were the Blue Devils until the clergy in town complained.

Also in San Antonio, Alamo Heights (the ritzy part of SA) is the Mules too. I always think it's funny because I don't see Mules being associated with Alamo Heights.

Was passing through Lakeland Fl today and noticed the Lakeland Jr Sr High School mascot was the Dreadnaughts. Thought that one was unusual. Had to look up the definition.
