A few thoughts from this game....

NewCath REALLY needs a kicker!! Very short kickoffs most of the time and missed extra point again. Doesn't really matter in a game like this but will down the road

Smith can't run between tackles but get him outside and you wont get a hand on him.

Breds still look sloppy at times, and don't always play smart, as of tonight no way they win state!

Does Brossart have a trainer??? QB comes off field hurt and sits alone on bench with nobody checking him. Another player gets hurt and is down for a minute. Coaches talk to him on field, he walks off with big time limp no one helps then falls to the ground on sideline and still no trainer there?? Most teams have more then one on their staff does BB have none?? Kids were in pain but just left all alone. a few NewCath moms who are RN's were about to jump the fence and take care of the BB players.

I was told 9 of the 20 players on BB team are seniors, if so how will they even be able to field a team next season?? I respect trying to start a program but I think it is about time to cut their lose on this idea.

BB QB is a tough kid. Was asked to run all night and took a bunch of hits. He will be hurting tomorrow but my hat off to him for not giving up. Good work young man!!

Another thing I noticed is Lawnboy was smarter than me by wearing more layers of clothes. It was awful cold out there.

In the only Saturday game in the state this evening, the Breds take care of business in the 1st half and go to 3-0 in District play. With all due respect to our fish-eating brethren from the southern end of the county, this one went as expected. The Brossart kids play tough, especially the QB, Casey Pelgen, and the Britt kid is a LOAD (at least 6'6" 300 lbs+) and moves quick for a big man.

1st Quarter

NewCath - Mac Franzen 12 TD pass to Brandon Gray (Boberg kick) 9:01

NewCath - Mac Franzen 50 yd TD pass to Mikey Runyon (kick failed) 6:45

NewCath - Jake Smith 64 yd TD run (Boberg kick) 1:35

2nd Quarter

NewCath - Jake Smith 10 yd TD run (Boberg kick) 8:31

NewCath - Mac Franzen 14 yd TD pass to Jake Smith (Boberg kick) 2:51

NewCath - Mac Franzen 14 yd TD pass to Brandon Gray (Boberg kick) 00:40

NewCath 20-21-00-00----41

Brossart 00-00-00-00-----00

"As expected" for both of us. We always hope for better, but NCC is the dominant force right now and reality is reality.

I thought we had our moments, but also shot ourselves in the foot with unforced turnovers. Until our tackling gets better in the secondary we are susectible to the big plays that NCC capitalized on tonight.

I was quite impressed with the passing of Mac Franzen who seemed to always be in synch with his receivers. Brandon Gray made several circus catches, two for TDs, and I think was perfect on receptions on the night.

I thought our punter Frankie Cetrulo had a good night, and while it was a well-called and executed fake field-goal, I would have liked to have seen the outcome of Frankie's attempt from 31 out, well within his range. I was also impressed with the accuracy of Boberg, the NCC PAT kicker who was perfect less one, which hit the upright. He also hit the upright a second time, but got a more favorable bounce.

We'll give you a "Get Out of Jail Free" card on the time out with 30 seconds to go in the half, up 34-0. Seeing how it sent the game to a running clock and that you started your 2s and played them throughout the second half.

Continued success as you march towards the 2013 2-A state championship. One caveat - Hold on to the football!!!

Looks like we've got two threads going on this one.

Bill Twehues is our very capable trainer and was at the game tonight and attended both injured Brossart players, Casey Pelgen and Josh Brugger. Both returned to the game. Dr. Karl Schmitt is our St.E on site sports medicine doctor. He was not in attendence tonight.

Mod please combine. Bill needs to move a little faster then. I was 5 rows from field directly behind played laying in pain on sideline after no one helped him off field and he was all alone for several min. I was watching with my own eyes its a fact that cant be proven wrong. Several moms NewCath moms were yelling 'someone help the kid" they almost did themselves. Felt bad for the young man. God Bless I am going to lay down and watch rest of FSU Clemson.

Not disputing you. I too saw Casey sitting on the bench alone after coming off of the field.

I was simply answering your question if we had a trainer. I'm sure Bill had good reason to not be attending to our injured players.

Im with ya' just felt kind of bad for the young man. Again the BB QB is a tough kid for all the running he was asked to do with all the hits he kept taking. Hats off to him. you have any idea on the #'s if the Mustangs will even be able to field a team next season?? Ok now I am really going to lay down.

TAYLOR MILL – The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds and Bishop Brossart Mustangs have some great rivalries in many sports.

Football is not one of them mostly because NewCath is deeper and has had a program longer. The Thoroughbreds list about 60 players on their roster and have fielded a team every year since 1945. Brossart has just 21 players on its roster with two currently injured on a team that started varsity play in 2007.

That led to the third Thoroughbred Class 2A, District 6 shellacking in three straight years by a 41-0 count Saturday at Scott High. NewCath beat Brossart, 58-0 at the same location last year and 62-0 in 2011 for a grand total of 161-0 in the three meetings.

The Thoroughbreds (4-4 overall, 3-0 district) clinched their ninth straight district championship and 21st overall. They are 23-0 in district play since 2007. Brossart dropped to 2-5 and 0-4 and had already been eliminated from playoff contention entering the game.

Both teams ran spread offenses. But NewCath dominated the trenches and it showed in the statistics. The Thoroughbreds outgained the Mustangs, 364-62 in total offense.

“The speed of the game and the sizes of different people,” said Maleek Lawrence, NewCath sophomore offensive and defensive lineman when asked about adjusting from junior varsity and freshman to varsity football. “We just have to work hard every day. It’s about doing the same thing every day. Having the Blue (reserve) Team go against us every day makes us better.”

NewCath came out throwing the ball all over the field. Quarterback Mac Franzen completed 12-of-16 passes for 75 percent for 204 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Several different receivers had catches for the Thoroughbreds. Brandon Gray led the way with five catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Tommy Donnelly followed with four catches for 62 yards.

“Mac (Franzen) has really improved on finding open receivers,” Gray said. “Basically, all we did all week was work to the ball. We did drills where Mac gets out of the pocket, scrambles and you move to the ball. That really helped. The coaches did a good job with that.”

That opened things up for the Thoroughbred running game. Sophomore Jacob Smith ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half.

NewCath led 41-0 at halftime to force the running clock. That let the reserves play in a scoreless second half.

On the other side, Brossart quarterback Casey Pelgen found himself constantly pressured. He ran for 30 yards on 18 carries and completed just 2-of-14 passes for just 14 yards.

“We kind of expected we would (get pressure on Pelgin),” said Dan Wagner, NewCath Head Coach. “We got after (Pelgin) and did what we have to do. I think we’re making strides (in the lines). We’re so young. Their getting the idea and you can see improvement every week.”

Both teams lost three fumbles. Lawrence and Bryson Hightchew recovered fumbles for the Thoroughbreds.

Gray caught his first touchdown pass with 9:01 left in the first quarter before Michael Runyon caught a pass then broke a tackle before sprinting 50 yards for the touchdown with 6:41 left in the first quarter. The Thoroughbreds led 13-0 after their lone missed extra-point attempt of the game.

“It’s always critical when you make a big play,” said Dave Schneider, NewCath Offensive Coordinator. “It then takes less plays to score. I thought we did a nice job finding the open man and moved the ball. Mac played a nice ballgame. We still had some turnovers and penalties. We have to clean the mental mistakes up.”

The Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 20-0 after Smith broke free for a 64-yard score with 1:34 left in the half. Wyatt Boberg made 5-of-6 PATs on the evening.

NewCath added six more touchdowns in the second quarter. Smith scored on 10 and 14-yard runs and Gray scored his second touchdown on a 14-yard play.

Final District contest:

The Thoroughbreds conclude district play against Covington Holy Cross on Friday at 7 p.m. at Newport Stadium.

Holy Cross enters the contest struggling at 1-7 and 1-2 in district play. The Indians lost district contests to Newport and Lloyd Memorial in overtime. They dropped a 37-36 decision to Newport on Friday.

NewCath knows it must contain Holy Cross senior running back Jalen Beal. Beal rushed for 917 yards on 130 carries and 12 touchdowns in the first seven games for the Indians.

“The (Beal) kid is a special talent,” Wagner said. “We saw a pretty good back to start the year in (Ashland Blazer’s Quentin Baker). I think this is the best kid we’ve seen all year by far. I sat and watched tape. Conner couldn’t contain him. We have our work cut out for us.”

NewCath holds an all-time record of 18-2 against Holy Cross. The two schools have combined to win the last three Class 2A titles.

Fort Thomas Sports

Referencing KyJoe's comments on the sustainability of the Brossart football program, I will agree that we are not out of the woods yet. However, we do have kids in the building who have either not played, or played in the past, who plan on returning or coming out to the program next season. We also have a Colts feeder program who will be feeding players into the program.

We have one more year of 2A football to endure and then WILL BE realigned back into 1A where it is hoped that we will progress to be competitive, post a winning record on an annual basis, make and perhaps win a playoff game or two, and become attractive to those standing on the sidelines at NCC and Campbell County who might want to actually play the game themselves and play in a winning program.

That is the dream and the stratagy. At that point we will actually have a better chance of winning a state championship than will the Camels.

Far fetched, perhaps. But perhaps not. If you are familiar with our other sports you will realize that this happens with great regularity at Brossart.

I noted with interest in the NCC Football Media Guide that the Thoroughbreds, much like our basketball Mustangs (who have not had a losing season in 20 years) suffered through many lean years before becoming a championship caliber football program.

The Thoroughbreds had only one winning season (5-4-1) in their first 21 years of existence, which included two winless seasons. Even as recently as 1998 the Breds posted back-to-back 2-9 and 4-8 seasons.

I guess because of our success in all of our other sports that we too are a bit impatient in becoming a competitive football program. I sincerely doubt that back in the formative years of the NCC program they were competing for players with a state championship caliber program on one hand, and an up and coming big school program with a new stadium and free tuition on the other, let alone starting a new program and joining them already in progress. It was not until NCC's 37th year that they began to post winning seasons on a consistent basis.

It is certainly no disgrace, nor is it unprecedented to lose to the Breds. Ludlow has failed in 21 of 22 attempts. Lloyd has fallen in 31 of their 37 tries. Bellevue has come up short in 24 of their 30 meetings. Holy Cross (who upset the Breds in the 2011 2A playoffs) are only 2-18 vs the Breds.

Rome and the NewCath Football program weren't built in a day, and under the capable direction of Coach Lee Teegarden and his staff we will continue to progress and bccome a competitive program in good time.

I thought Johnny Caudill was the kicker for NCC? Is he injured or did Boberg take his spot?

thanks for the input. I just wonder will there be enough kids to field a team next year? How does BB even practice if you don't have enough kids for a scout team?? Hard to improve if other kids are not fighting for your spot and no one to really have a full practice against. Is getting beat week in and week out at BB better then fighting for time at NewCath with a chance to be a member of a state championship team? I have no dog in this fight just some thoughts.
