Seriously? I can't imagine that playing Roger Bacon, Moeller, St X., Elder LaSalle, et al, in the early 70's is anywhere close to comparable as playing Holy Cross, NCC, Newport, Lloyd not to mention Betsy Lane, Eminence, Caverna, Middletown Christian and Bracken County today.

 

I don't think the question was asked to compare Brossart's early success to NCC's early success. But rather to ask about the sustainability of Brossart's football program as it exists today. I wish the current senior class of Brossart football players had experienced more success, especially in their junior and senior campaigns. Everyone knew going in that the early years would be full of challenges but this senior class really presented an opportunity to grow the program into a much more stable situation. The current junior class has a number or athletes that would have helped the program tremendously had they stayed involved. That may have been enough momentum to find enough traction to improve the program.

 

Truth be told, a comparison to Holy Cross' early program would be a much more apt comparison because both programs began in the same era and are very close in size.

Just by looking at enrollment numbers it almost seems like the next alignment will have Brossart, Bellevue, Dayton and Ludlow in the same district. Beechwood and Newport Catholic should both be in Class 2A. That 1A district should help Brossart have some more success.

I've seen this strategy in other sports. Kids who aren't good enough to start/play at school A go to school B for a chance to start/play. Problem is, they still aren't better players than kids at school A. I don't know how you build a winning program that way.

The Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference (NKAC) would not let private (catholic) schools in their conference and it was not to any public schools advantage to play a team that might beat them.

 

The 1966 NewCath team would have played in the Ohio High School playoffs that year (5-2 league record tied for 1st), but since they were a KY school they were not eligible to play in the Ohio High School Playoffs so Moeller got to go in their place.

I have little doubt that the second team at Cov Cath or Highlands would be a strong contender in 1A if you added in just 2 or 3 top level players with them.

 

I have said this many times. There is enough talent in the building at Brossart to field a competitive football team. With the right coaching staff and a core group of kids committed to football, Brossart will be competitive.

John Rapp was the QB, Rick Muench was the RB/FB, Joe Klare was a lineman, Carl Heck at NG, along with a good group of players. Beat Elder at Elder, St. X in the GCL doubleheader at Xavier Univ... The O line was very big for that time.

I'm comparing Brossart today playing 2A competition to NCC then playing GCL competition. I'm not saying that it is at the same level (where is the "Shoot me" icon?) but it is the same challenge. Leave the other schools out of it. I merely dug up some of NCC's early day results to make a point that they too struggled mightily in the early years.

 

And thanks to a post here by Lawnboy informs us that you can only use the GCL crutch for 5 years. Again, it wasn't until their 33rd year (circa 1976) that they began to post winning records on a consistent basis. For their first 21 years when they were where we presently are today, they only enjoyed one winning season - 1948 (5-4-1) and suffered through two winless seasons. I realize that it's apples and oranges but it is what it is.
