I posted a thread about Breathitt whipping Morgan Co, and was going to give each game its own thread, but decided to list them in one single thread. Are these beatdowns based on disparity of talent or coaches simply running up scores? Ashland 100 Rose Hill Christian 30 Bulitt Central 95 Evangel Christian 41 Clinton Co. 92 Cumberland Co. 47 Manual 101 Portland Christian 34 Doss 95 Brown 26 That is just in the last two nights. Bardstown beat Caverna the other night by close to 70 points. What gives?

One ugly game. Where are all of the older kids on Morgan County's roster?

The Dogs got off to a quick start and made shots. When they do that, they will be a tough out.

#1 is Trinity. Then there is a gap between them and #2. The state is down as a whole with the exception of Trinity.

From all I can gather, Somerset had a bulk of their kids playing basketball for less than a week because of football. I prefaced my first comment with "at this stage". As of now, I would place Holy Cross and Cov. Cath. as the top two teams. Holy Cross- The addition of the transfer from Cincinnati gives them a legit shot at the region title, because he offers them a low post presence. Holy Cross can put up a lot of points. They also have return quite a few players from last year's team. Add a solid player in Campbell to go along with Beurger and company and you have a solid nucleus. Can they get enough stops? Their game at Scott this week should tell us some things. Cov.Cath- They beat Boone last night coming off a hard fought loss in Falmouth. I have heard rave reviews of their point guard, who may be one of the best in the region. They will get after you. Thus far they have played fairly well against a solid schedule. Do they have enough perimeter shooting? Holmes- At this stage, if you are a Holmes fan you have to be somewhat concerned about their scoring/shooting. They have potentially the best player in the region, because very few players have the skill set and size of Dontel Rice, but he is going to have to want to be the best player and Holmes needs him to be that if they want to make a run at the region. Coach Booher's style will put a lot of pressure on opponent's guards, but Holmes misses that guard on offense that can break you down and score at the basket. I have no doubt as the year progresses that they will get better. Getting that one seed this year will be very important. Aren't the districts at Holy Cross?

It is amazing to see how bad Morgan County is. How long can the locals down there continue to support the product they roll out there? Coach Perry has set that program back with his insistence on youth. They are 7-45 over the last two seasons plus

I would venture to say that the 10th Region is WIDE open. The Eagles with a solid little weekend. Beat Mason County in the Fieldhouse and one of the favorites to win the 8th.

What should they take? Probably that Holmes is the third best team in the 35th District at this stage.

Holmes beat Estill County earlier today by 12 and beat Madison Southern tonight by 2.

Is Campbell the kid from North College Hill?

Walter, Holmes pressed the entire game and had success at times, but Brossart hurt them in the half court. The Bulldogs couldn't get tempo and Brossart did their thing in the half court which is where they had the advantage. Brossart just too big and strong in the post and they made open shots when they had them. Brossart's defense is underrated. They play a strong switching man to man and can funnel drivers to their big kids. Brossart's ball handling is not all that great against full court man pressure, but against zone press they have enough size to throw over top or see over top. Was impressed with 14 and 33 for Brossart. They will be a tough out in the district/region, because of the style they play. Very methodical in the half court and tend not to beat themselves. Holmes will be fine as the season progresses, but they need more from Rice.

I was sitting with some Scott fans this evening so I really didn't see the bench too much, but I would guess they installed a seat belt on his chair. From some folks I have spoken with, he is fitting in quite well at Holmes. Holmes had another new assistant on the bench that I didn't recognize.

What was the Crazies theme tonight? Good win for GRC opening at CCH with a lot of fresh faces.

I was impressed with the Eagles tonight. They had a very nice game plan and executed it for the most part. They really scrapped and for the most part handled the ball fairly well in the halfcourt. I also thought their defensive gameplan was solid as well. They mixed it up and settled into a 2-3 zone that gave Holmes problems. They were in control but kind of let it get away from them in the final half of the 4th quarter. They will get better as the year goes on. As for Holmes, they will be a work in progress, and have one of the best players in the region in Dontel Rice. Rice had a quiet 25 if you ask me. I think the kid could be dominate if he became more aggressive on the offensive end. I thought he disappeared for stretches and was bothered by the physical play of the Eagles. He needs to demand a touch every trip down the floor in a halfcourt setup. He hit a couple big shots when they needed it, but the more assertive he becomes the better Holmes will be. It is going to take some time for the Holmes guards to gel. Ball handling and shooting are going to be keys for this team. Can they take care of the ball and make open shots? In the end, this team will go as far as Rice carries them. It was an impressive run over the last 3 minutes for Holmes which showed what they are capable of becoming. It looks like they have done some work to the Fieldhouse at Holmes since last year. They repainted the entire inside and have installed new lighting. It is much much brighter in there. In addition, they turn the lights off and use a spotlight for the Holmes player introductions and used music for the intros. The lights come right back on immediately. Impressive for a high school setting.

Heard Jude had close to 400 yards rushing. Also, Johnson Central took out their first string defense in the 2nd quarter, but kept their first string offense in to get Jude more carries and helping Holmes's offensive cause and keep the running clock at bay. Stay classy Matney!

I have heard there has been some polling done to get some feedback on the present playoff format in the state of Kentucky, regarding the football playoffs. I think we may soon be on the verge of going back to where only the top two teams in a district make the playoffs. I think this is best. There is no greater ridiculousness in all of KY high sports than the opening week of the high school playoffs. What sense does it make to have teams travel two and three hours only to get pummeled by 60 points? It serves no purpose other than prolonging the season. I think you could find something for some schools to continue playing without having to get beaten badly by superior teams.

As a follower of Holmes, it was an embarrassing display. Very unfortunate to see this. I thought the officials were at fault too. They allowed things to get bogged down and took forever to make calls. However, some of the extra curricular was uncalled for. It probably was a good thing that the lights went out. As for the light situation, I think the Holmes campus underwent a lot of renovation on their campus which may be causing a strain on the grounds somewhere. Holy Cross has a decent little team.

I have no idea in regards to Peterson, but the Knox kid has not been with the team for the last few weeks.

BengalManiac, I think this has been a pretty solid year for Holmes. Sure, getting hammered by the score they did is not something to be proud of, but overall they have played a pretty solid schedule that very well could have 3 state champions on it. It is a far cry of the type of schedule they have played in the past. Not much was expected of the Dogs this year but they sitting at 4-4 and have the three seed locked up. As for the game, I was out of there after halftime. I see nothing wrong with the onside kick and to think anything of it is silly. Holmes has had trouble with their kick game all year and usually just squibs kickoffs. The first play for a TD was deflating for the Dogs. It didn't help that Holmes was using their 3rd string QB from the start.

I believe this is the most shocking score of the season so far. For Dixie this is an abject embarrassment. Easily the most underachieving team in NKY. Congrats is in order for Campbell County. A real confidence booster for their staff. Winning one point would be a confidence booster but to simply crush Dixie in the fashion that they did is unreal.

With all of that being said, Holmes has done better this year than most would have thought.

I agree with you Clyde. I would also add in "skill". Big difference between being "skilled" and an "athletic". In football, much is predicated on the success of your offensive and defensive lines. Over the years, Holmes has not had great o-lines but within the right system they can have success. I really don't know what Holmes is running this year on offense but it is nothing like they have ran in the past when they had some success. As for the cheap shot argument, I will disagree. In addition, why have one of your better player's/starter in the game when it is essentially over?

This was over early as Holmes put up 38 in the first quarter. Good to see sophomore Jonathon Scruggs getting more touches on offense. Very few if any kids are as fast as this kid. I think he scored the first three touchdowns for Holmes tonight. Holmes's offense is starting to play a little bit better since they put Coston in at quarterback. They will improve only as much as their offensive line does. However, Pendleton is not very good but they play hard. Can Holmes play with Cov. Cath? Cov. Cath. Is clearly the better team, but Holmes has risen to the occasion when having to face teams that are better on paper. A lot would have to go their way. Will be interesting to see how they fare against NCC next week.

Defensive struggle tonight. I agree with many things posted in this thread. I don't see SK beating Dixie or Boone because they look deficient on offense. With the exception of their scoring drive they never really pounded out any sustained drive. SK had the one long pass play on a busted coverage, but went no further. They have a few nice players, and their defense is pretty good, but it is tough to say because Holmes's offense is just that bad. It's hard to tell what Holmes is actually running. Knox is a big kid but not much of a runner. He has a nice arm, but lacks touch and any accuracy. They are very limited with him back there. This is not a knock on him but he just looks out of position. Another issue is their offensive line, and that may be the biggest issue. They have essentially had to replace their entire OL from a year ago and they are young and still have a ways to go. Holmes's playcalling was very suspect as well, particularly their series they had where they went three and out and punted, in which SK took the ball and drove for the winning TD. I give Holmes's defense credit. This group plays hard and pursues very well and gets the turnovers, but their offense simply can't do anything with it. Number 74 for Holmes didn't play tonight and he is a moose, and a freshman I think.

No feathers ruffled, but I figured I wouldn't let that comment slide. They had a couple kids lose their cool, but both teams were very cordial post game. Physical game. Many thought this would be a blowout and Holmes hung with them and they longer they stayed in the more confident they became. Holmes kids got excited on some open field blocks. Vocke is fun to watch in the open field. Nussbaum is a solid player as well. Still think Holmes's defense was the most impressive thing tonight. Fought poor field position all game and scored two touchdowns. Beechwood was off their game and for Holmes to have a chance they would need some turnovers. Holmes's offense needs a lot of work. They struggled last week on offense as well.
