Running it up or overmatched?

Featured Replies

I posted a thread about Breathitt whipping Morgan Co, and was going to give each game its own thread, but decided to list them in one single thread.

Are these beatdowns based on disparity of talent or coaches simply running up scores?

Ashland 100 Rose Hill Christian 30

Bulitt Central 95 Evangel Christian 41

Clinton Co. 92 Cumberland Co. 47

Manual 101 Portland Christian 34

Doss 95 Brown 26

That is just in the last two nights.

Bardstown beat Caverna the other night by close to 70 points.

What gives?

Go to KHSAA website and look at Brown's season results. That is not their worst losing margin!

We have this discussion every year about games that shouldn't even be played. Most of them are district games that must be played. As long as the winning team isn't pressing or playing starters up late in the game, it can't be running the score up.

Basketball teams can't simply stop at first base on every hit or kneel the ball. Not shooting or playing defense would be more of a slap in the face to the other team than playing normal half-court basketball IMO.

One coach I talked to basically said the same thing. He doesn't take offense to a blowout (especially if theyre subbing and not pressing) and said he actually finds it more offensive when a coach tells his team not to score.

Calling a timeout and telling your team not to press or fastbreak. And run your offensive sets four or five times before shooting wouldn't hurt. You don't tell your team not to score. Just run your offense some before shooting. Plus it could only help your team. Beating a team by 50 can't always be helped. But 100-30. A few set plays sure could have been run in this game. (No need to mention schools)

^ when you put the score, you don't have to mention the school. My feeling is that if I can't stop you, that's my problem. Don't patronize me as a coach by not shooting. On the other side of things, if my team is up big, I may pull my starters, but the kids at the end of my bench have earned their time on the court. There may be a time I need them to run the offense or press...this is a great time to work on that.

I am afraid that the LIT rating that comes out after Christmas for each region really makes some coaches run the score up. The LIT is some districts tie breakers for seeding even, I know that running a score up in some cases is inevitable. Two different situations, a team is up 12 with minute left, coach takes his kids out, other coach leaves his studs in to win by 20 in the last minute, watched this Tuesday. Another scenario is the coach wants his team to still execute etc, and leaves them in, probably not going to get to execute very much so that is a load of crap as well. As a coach we supposed to be coaching because we love the players and respect the game. When someone wins by 40 or more both have been thrown under the bus.

IMO i think games that are blow outs give your team an opportunity to run different sets and try different things against actual opponents.... it can basically turn into a live practice if the score is that lopsided...by no means should you ever tell your team not to score...if winning wasnt important they wouldnt keep score...and as long as the coach keeps subbing and isn't pressing i see no issue....

If you can't compete don't play. Every coach at sometime in their career has been on both ends of this either losing by several point or winning by a significant amount. It's part of the game you want to let other teams know that when they step on the floor with you they are going to get beat and get beat bad. The only way to eliminate this would be a class system where you play within your class and then that would still not eliminate it completely. What is a team supposed to do come down and hand it over to them everytime and let them score so they can feel good? Sorry the real world does not work like that, is the kid in law school that has the ability to ace the BAR exam supposed to tank it so his roommate who stayed out partying instead of studying can feel good about his terrible score.

How can you know if a team is running it up if you aren't at the game?

Why must these district games be played?

I'm not saying play stall ball, I am saying that when you are ahead it would be respectful of the other team to stop pressing them, maybe work on your zone offense, let your younger guys play and maybe even dress your younger kids that dont play varsity. As a coach you know when you are alot better than someone. As the coach of the team losing I would want my players to play as hard as they can, it they are not trying and pouting I would not care if they get beat 50. If it is a case of just being overmatched and there is nothing you can do about it like a district mandatory game, then I would make sure that I didnt beat a bunch of kids by 70. There are some bad teams out there and I understand that, some coaches however run it up on purpose, and that is what drives fans, parents and other teams crazy.

Why must these district games be played?

Most districts seed. For example Silver Grove is forced to take beating from Bishop Brossart, Campbell County, and Scott every year because the 37th District is seeded.

Our district seeds and uses winning margins as a tie breaker, but the margin can only county up to 15. If you win by 50 it still counts as 15. The purpose is to keep teams from running up the score. If two teams are tied with each winning by 15 at the end of the season, then the tiebreaker is simply a coin toss. In the 30+ years we've been seeding that has never had to be used.
