Present Playoff Format Nearing An End?

Featured Replies

I have heard there has been some polling done to get some feedback on the present playoff format in the state of Kentucky, regarding the football playoffs. I think we may soon be on the verge of going back to where only the top two teams in a district make the playoffs. I think this is best.

There is no greater ridiculousness in all of KY high sports than the opening week of the high school playoffs. What sense does it make to have teams travel two and three hours only to get pummeled by 60 points? It serves no purpose other than prolonging the season. I think you could find something for some schools to continue playing without having to get beaten badly by superior teams.

As long as we keep playing with six classes/divisions for football, it won't happen.

Prime example: Trinity vs Simon Kenton

Prior to all of the changes, the first round playoff games definitely had more relevance than they currently do. There used to be some blowouts here and there, but back then, the first round games were by far more competitive overall.

I feel that only the top two teams deserve to be in the playoffs. Its stupid to allow a team with 2 or 3 wins into the playoffs, i dont think these kids really want to extend their season another game after a season like this, it is also a good chance for some team to lose a player to injury in a game that is more times than not a huge blowout!

Annual argument. I fall on the side of keeping it as it is. Every year there are #4 seeds that win games. I am fairly certain there have been #4 seeds make it all the way to the championship game. I don't know if a #4 seed has won a title but I would not be surprised. So what if there are blowouts? Why is that a problem? People complain about other playoff systems in sports because teams get left out of the playoffs and wonder why. I say let every team possible have a second chance at redeeming their season and possibly even winning a title.

It has its positives and negatives. Either way, I am not against it.

I think a lot of us had gotten accustomed to having four teams per district in the old four-class setup, but 6x4 is a little too much to stomach.

Then why is it OK for every other athlete in every other sport in the state to automatically be in the playoffs? Yes, you will have a lot of lopsided scores but you might have a few 4 seeds win and one may even make a state final. Just ask Simon Kenton. I am sure there are some first round matchups in district play in basketball that are lopsidied as well, but they still play or some cross country runners who have no chance in their regional meet but they still get to run. Are there too many classes in football? Yes. Does it hurt anyone to have more teams in the playoffs? No

Because football is different than every other sport in that teams can only safely play one game a week. It takes five weeks to play the postseason. No other sport takes that long.

So? What else are you going to do the first week of December?

We could go to the Ohio format and teams that are 8-2 and have consistently gotten better over the season could miss the playoffs. What kind of discussion would that give birth to?

I'm not sure what system is better but I think the playoffs is something a team has to earn. I see no place for 0-10 teams in the playoffs.

I have always thought that 4 teams advancng out of a distict is wrong, I woulde be fine with two. Maybe as many as three, then you could give the district champion a 1st round bye and they would play a 2 vs. 3 winner in the 2nd round. That would give more incentive for a team to win their district and put more value to the regular season.

As it is right now in our district there are only four teams in the distict and I thnk that is the case with most if not all. So, with the pesent set up you could get an 0-10 team advancing. That is just crazy. I can certaoinly remember the years when only the distict champ advanced, one team from each distfict. I think the two teams from each distict advancing would be the right way to go.

That's my opinion and we all know what opinions are like.........everybody has one. :sssh: :D
