My thing is that when a team that doesn't usually make the playoffs actually does, it is great for their community. Having graduated from West Carter, it was a huge deal when the team made the playoffs for the first time this decade, and I believe it has helped build the football program. I'm sure Kevin Brown would tell you the same thing. Maybe they're are not Trinity or Highlands, but it does give people in the community hope that the program can continue to get better.

 

Being at East Carter now, it would be huge for our guys to get to the playoffs next year. It would help our program out tremendously. It would be great for our community, which has had its share of problems. Being in a 4 team district means nothing as far as playoff births go, but in larger districts it is a big deal for programs that are trying to move in the right direction. Powerful teams get a week to get everyone healthy, get experience for guys further down on the depth chart that will definitely be needed for a long playoff run, and the really young guys get a taste of the playoff experience. 4 teams making it in per district probably do not mean much to the state powers, but I think they help everyone else out so much. Do most 4 seeds not want to go to the playoffs, even if they have to play Highlands? I know West was happy as heck to go to play Mason or Belfry in the first round, even if it was going to be a tough game.

I don't mind it being there, I just prefer to not have it, and if we have to have it that it be in the week prior to the playoffs. I don't think it shortened the season, it's tomatoes and tomatoes - start a week early or not it's still 11 weeks.

 

I think it did shorten the season. We used to have two preseason scrimmages and an 11 week regular season to play 10 games. Now it's a 10 week regular season to play 10 games and if you want to have a bye, you have to eliminate one preseason scrimmage and play one of your 10 regular season games that week. We eliminated 1 week on the regular season calendar. Before you had 2 weeks of scrimmages, 11 weeks to play 10 games and 5 weeks of playoffs for a total of 18; now it's a total of 17.

If you have a competitive bone in your body, yes. You may go in knowing that you're going to get steamrolled; but you want to measure yourself against the best.

They tried that 4 or 5 years ago in an effort to cut the early-round travel, and coaches (and most of the rest of us) pretty much hated it across the board.

 

I wouldn't be surprised however to see the old system come back. If there are going to be blowouts in the first round due to 4 teams making the playoffs, and fans won't pay to see blowouts (regardless if the weaker team is from within the district or from some other district), it makes the most economic sense to have the blowout occur within the district. I understand Sam's point but unfortunately economics comes into play at times.

Well stated. There is no embarrassment or shame playing your hardest and getting beat badly. There is shame in not trying your hardest because you think you can't win. As my father told me and I've told my sons: character is not revealed during easy times, rather it is revealed during tough times. If I'm a head coach of a team expected to be beaten badly, I'm watching my underclassmen closely in this game to see which ones will be my leaders next year.They will be the ones that bust their humps in this game and keep their heads up regardless of the score.

Annual argument. I fall on the side of keeping it as it is. Every year there are #4 seeds that win games. I am fairly certain there have been #4 seeds make it all the way to the championship game. I don't know if a #4 seed has won a title but I would not be surprised. So what if there are blowouts? Why is that a problem? People complain about other playoff systems in sports because teams get left out of the playoffs and wonder why. I say let every team possible have a second chance at redeeming their season and possibly even winning a title.

If I'm not mistaken I think Bourbon Co. was a #4 seed and won the 2A state championship some time in the 90's with Dudley as their Coach. That was a strong district with Danville, Lex Cath, Boyle Co. and Bourbon Co.

I agree 100% with doing away with the bye week and taking the top 3 teams!!!!! The district winner gets the first round off and the 2 & 3 teams from each district play. It is so simple that it makes sense!!!

It doesnt matter how many classes you have the powers will still be in the finals. I dont like the 4 team format, I think it should be 2 teams out of each district. The season starts way to early in August. if you only had the two teams then you could beat the heat in August by starting the first of September. This would help out the county schools who have a hard time with the numbers on their roster, A coach could still have about three weeks to get kids out after school starts.

If they go to only 2 from each District get to play then this year Trinity/X would have gotten to play, but the way it is now Manual/Male also played and advanced, its kinda like going to a bowl for a college team who gets extra practice for the younger guys, as Male/Manual have gotten the extra work, they may lose and be done, but they may win also and a extra week, and this goes for all the schools who didn't finish one or two.

I have a similar thought. Eliminate the bye week and have teams play 10 games in 10 weeks. Allow the top 3 teams per district into the playoffs. The #1 team in the district gets a bye week in the first round. Therefore the reward for winning the district is a week to rest/heal while finishing 2nd/3rd requires to continue playing. And by not allowing 4th/5th place teams in, you guarantee that all teams must qualify for the playoffs.

 

I know there are some problems with my plan but there are some positives to it also. Alas, I don't see any changes being made by the KHSAA any time soon.

 

you still have to realign to make this work, because of the 3 team district in 6A. I like the concept though!
