The issue for me is not the 1vs4 seeding. The issue is the travel. Example E-town to Bell Co. is crazy for a first round game. Makes no sense to me how Bell Co. ended up in the west.

 

I think they need to look at how the have the regions organized. I think the KHSAA set up the regions to make sure certain teams had to play each other in the regional and semi-finals to avoid always playing in the finals. That way they can say more teams are making it to the Finals. I think the classes need more balance than they currently have.

Annual argument. I fall on the side of keeping it as it is. Every year there are #4 seeds that win games. I am fairly certain there have been #4 seeds make it all the way to the championship game. I don't know if a #4 seed has won a title but I would not be surprised. So what if there are blowouts? Why is that a problem? People complain about other playoff systems in sports because teams get left out of the playoffs and wonder why. I say let every team possible have a second chance at redeeming their season and possibly even winning a title.

The only teams having a bye have chosen to have on preseason scrimmage instead of two (with the first regular season game played in week zero in place of the second scrimmage). So in effect, the season is not extended due to the fact that some teams chose to eliminate the second scrimmage in favor of a bye during the season.

I'm a basketball guy and I like everything the way it is. I love the month of November and each Friday of that month. I love the first weekend of December also. I would like to see football have 5 classes instead of 6 but I have no complaints about how anything is done in any sport. I wish they all lasted longer to be honest.

The later it gets, the better chance for inclement weather at the state finals.

I have a similar thought. Eliminate the bye week and have teams play 10 games in 10 weeks. Allow the top 3 teams per district into the playoffs. The #1 team in the district gets a bye week in the first round. Therefore the reward for winning the district is a week to rest/heal while finishing 2nd/3rd requires to continue playing. And by not allowing 4th/5th place teams in, you guarantee that all teams must qualify for the playoffs.

 

I know there are some problems with my plan but there are some positives to it also. Alas, I don't see any changes being made by the KHSAA any time soon.

But driving there in the ice/snow is not fun.

I am not in favor of the 3 teams making it and the number one seed getting a bye. I think that most good teams don't want to get out of sync with a bye week that late if they do then they can schedule that themselves with the week zero. The extra week helps teams that have a hard time finding games an option.

If we went to just two from each district, then Class 4A, district 6 would have a problem.

 

They tied at the top with three teams and that would mean that Knox Central (who based on points is a 3 seed but tied for first in District) would be left out with no playoff game at all.

 

But to the life of me, that's the only excuse vs. the 2 team per District idea I've seen.

Then why is it OK for every other athlete in every other sport in the state to automatically be in the playoffs? Yes, you will have a lot of lopsided scores but you might have a few 4 seeds win and one may even make a state final. Just ask Simon Kenton. I am sure there are some first round matchups in district play in basketball that are lopsidied as well, but they still play or some cross country runners who have no chance in their regional meet but they still get to run. Are there too many classes in football? Yes. Does it hurt anyone to have more teams in the playoffs? No

the biggest difference is that in evry other sport, the teams are not Traveling 3 or 4 hours to the first rounds of district and regional tourneys. It sucks to drive 3 hours to a winnable game, I couldn't imagine on the busses either before or after these kind of games. The lack of a traveling crowd at these games is evidence that even the fans don't want to be there.

 

Personally I would like to see it gat back having championships on thanksgiving weekend. It was a great tradition.

Fulton City and Fulton County are two of the smallest public schools in the state and are tucked away in the far southwest corner of the state. They are a combined 3-17 and both made the playoffs since every school in Class A gets to the postseason.

 

Fulton City is making a 250-mile trip to Louisville Holy Cross for a game that no one would see as winnable. Fulton County might have a better shot at beating Kentucky Country Day, but they have a 300-mile trip to find out.

 

Really, four or five hours for a first-round playoff game that isn't remotely winnable? That's what six classes has given us.

You all are both obviously correct, but with the option given to coaches, the bye week will still be there. Not necessarily because they want a bye week but because there are always concessions for games. If the bye week was completely taken away there would be no other option. Until that happens, the bye week will be part of the sport.

1) Old four class system w/ four teams from each district making the playoffs.

2) Five classes, with 1A and 5A being like the current 1 and 6A in terms of the nber of teams in each and let 4 teams from each district in.

3) Six classes, but get those in charge of realignment a map.

 

As for the basketball season comment, when you guys make a push to drop "open" gym a month after your season is over and not play 735 games in the month of June vs outside competition, then we MIGHT consider making the state football finals Thanksgiving weekend.
