Personally, I like the bye week for the flexibility in scheduling, although some of that has been lost with the scheduling grid.

We could go to the Ohio format and teams that are 8-2 and have consistently gotten better over the season could miss the playoffs. What kind of discussion would that give birth to?

I agree Ram. I still don;t know how the Ohio playoff system works. I just see some very good teams miss the playoffs over there each year.

 

I'm not sure what system is better but I think the playoffs is something a team has to earn. I see no place for 0-10 teams in the playoffs.

Its a joke of a system in a watered down class system. The season is too long with the bye week and first round playoff laughers. Get rid of them and go back to playing state championships on Thanksgiving weekend. Its not fair to the basketball programs either who consistently get put behind the 8 ball with lack of team cohesiveness until maybe mid January because they carry many football players like Highlands. I wouldn't have a problem with consistently getting the footballers late if the class system wasn't so watered down in football. Lets be honest with ourselves, Highlands will likely get to the state championship in football 8 out of every 10 years in this current joke of a class system. Heck, the state championship game this yr for them will likely be in week 3 when CovCath visits. No disrespect to the teams from the other regions but until you can stop getting pounded in those Semi and state games by the Birds I will continue to see it this way.

I do not think the issue that four teams from each district make the playoffs is the real problem with the playoff system. The 4 teams in is a carryover from the 4 class system. At that point you had districts with 6 or 7 teams. Also, certain districts were so much stronger that all 4 teams swept the opposing district. Now.....with 6 classes only a handful of teams throughout the state miss the playoffs and realistically this causes the blowouts. However.....you still have certain districts that will sweep all 4 games or at least win 3 out of the 4.

 

The state needs to just cut the classes down and can still allow the 4 teams to make the playoffs per district.

I would like to see us go back to 4 classes, it made for better football in the play-offs with the top four teams making the play-offs. There are so many blow-outs in the first round and you take a chance of a player from the better team getting hurt in a game thats a blow-out.

The issue for me is not the 1vs4 seeding. The issue is the travel. Example E-town to Bell Co. is crazy for a first round game. Makes no sense to me how Bell Co. ended up in the west.

 

I think they need to look at how the have the regions organized. I think the KHSAA set up the regions to make sure certain teams had to play each other in the regional and semi-finals to avoid always playing in the finals. That way they can say more teams are making it to the Finals. I think the classes need more balance than they currently have.

I dont like the 4 teams in each district going, but, then you have some districts that have 4 quality teams. Look at 2a with Bardstown, Desales, CAL and Wash Co. All 4 of those are capable of making a deep run.

I've said it many times and will say it again, I don't care how football affects basketball. That should not be a part of the argument. If the basketball coaches lobby to fix the June/July thing, I may change my thought, but until then, I don't care if we even have a basketball season.

Annual argument. I fall on the side of keeping it as it is. Every year there are #4 seeds that win games. I am fairly certain there have been #4 seeds make it all the way to the championship game. I don't know if a #4 seed has won a title but I would not be surprised. So what if there are blowouts? Why is that a problem? People complain about other playoff systems in sports because teams get left out of the playoffs and wonder why. I say let every team possible have a second chance at redeeming their season and possibly even winning a title.

I have never understood why that is a reason to keep the present format.

 

The only nice part about it is that when I tell my friends that live away from Kentucky that my team made the playoffs, they are all shocked at how good my team must be :lol:

I would be for going to 2 teams from each district making the playoffs if all other sports would end the senseless advancing of district runner-ups to the regional tourney. Once you get beat in the tournament, your season should be over.

The #1 team in the district gets a bye week in the first round. Therefore the reward for winning the district is a week to rest/heal while finishing 2nd/3rd requires to continue playing. And by not allowing 4th/5th place teams in, you guarantee that all teams must qualify for the playoffs.

 

I know there are some problems with my plan but there are some positives to it also. Alas, I don't see any changes being made by the KHSAA any time soon.

I'm with you. I wouldn't mind that format. If we are going to have a bye week I would prefer it be after the 10 game regular season and the week before the playoffs begin - like it used to be. But, I could get used to the District Champions getting the bye.
