Thanks Walter for the updates. I'm on the road and was following your stuff along with my wife giving updates. Sounds like they have to shoot much better especially Ft's. I heard Scott was in foul trouble but the Bulldaogs couldn't make them pay until the end. Nice win against a good team.

Tough one to see slip away tonight! Scott controlled the game till the last 1:35 when Holmes hit the big shots. It was really tough at the end missing free-throws that maybe could have iced it for Scott.

I said the Dogs would be deep this year and they didn't disappoint with 9 in the box first game of the year.

 

Rice pretty much did what he wanted at both ends of the floor and played very smart. I'd assume he was very close to a double double.

 

For Scott, Daugherty, Pouncy, and Jackson all looked pretty solid but they simply couldn't defend the quicker Holmes guards which caused them to get in foul trouble.

 

Overall, it was Holmes depth and speed that won this game. Scott did what they wanted for 3 1/2 quarters and then Holmes kicked in another gear on defense. I also felt their shot selection was much better down the stretch which should be attributed to coaching.

 

Holmes and Scott are both works in progress but I think both will be very good teams come Feb. Scott's only downfall was their depth. Holmes, their free throw shooting. FT shooting was horrible until the final 5 or so mins.

 

Speaking of FT shooting, I believe Nick Jackson was perfect from the line for Scott tonight.

I was impressed with the Eagles tonight. They had a very nice game plan and executed it for the most part. They really scrapped and for the most part handled the ball fairly well in the halfcourt. I also thought their defensive gameplan was solid as well. They mixed it up and settled into a 2-3 zone that gave Holmes problems. They were in control but kind of let it get away from them in the final half of the 4th quarter. They will get better as the year goes on.

As for Holmes, they will be a work in progress, and have one of the best players in the region in Dontel Rice. Rice had a quiet 25 if you ask me. I think the kid could be dominate if he became more aggressive on the offensive end. I thought he disappeared for stretches and was bothered by the physical play of the Eagles. He needs to demand a touch every trip down the floor in a halfcourt setup. He hit a couple big shots when they needed it, but the more assertive he becomes the better Holmes will be.

It is going to take some time for the Holmes guards to gel. Ball handling and shooting are going to be keys for this team. Can they take care of the ball and make open shots? In the end, this team will go as far as Rice carries them.

It was an impressive run over the last 3 minutes for Holmes which showed what they are capable of becoming.

 

It looks like they have done some work to the Fieldhouse at Holmes since last year. They repainted the entire inside and have installed new lighting. It is much much brighter in there. In addition, they turn the lights off and use a spotlight for the Holmes player introductions and used music for the intros. The lights come right back on immediately. Impressive for a high school setting.

Nice summary Corso, and I agree with the intro comment. By far the best I've seen at a high school gym in this area. Lights out, spotlight on with music playing? Reminded me of Rupp without the fireworks. Very cool for the players.

 

I also really like the new unis that Holmes was sporting tonight. They are under armor and I believe the same design as Maryland wears only red and white, of course.

How did Coach L look tonight?

I was sitting with some Scott fans this evening so I really didn't see the bench too much, but I would guess they installed a seat belt on his chair. From some folks I have spoken with, he is fitting in quite well at Holmes. Holmes had another new assistant on the bench that I didn't recognize.

What? Scott probably has the deepest bench in NKY. They played 11 players before anyone fouled out. Scott cannot turn the ball over that many times and expect to win. Scott probably had close to 30 turnovers and many were unforced.

 

Scott's biggest downfall outside of the turnovers was inexperience. Not knowing how to finish a game. They will learn. The future looks bright for the young Eagles.

Where was Coston in this game. Walter you had Q and Coston pegged as the best backcourt in NKY and he doesn't crack the starting lineup or the scorebook? What gives? Is he in Booher's doghouse?
