This was a closer game than the score indicates. It was a six point game with four minutes to go. SK had some very good looks, but just couldn't hit the big shot to get it to a one possession game. KCC is really good with some young talent.

Nothing like traveling all the way to Florida and end up having to play a team you already played from your home state. Doesn't sound like a really strong field in Orlando, but should be a good experience for Holmes.

This is funny. I guess that Brossart had some secret road that they traveled to get to Lexington. Dixie and Scott didn't play until the afternoon to boot. In addition, I heard that the district would not allow parents to drive their child down for the tournament either. Other districts allow this and many use it as a means for transporting their teams. The big question will be whether or not the school district will refund the money lost by their programs for lodging. Im guessing they will not.

This tournament has lost a lot of its luster. Six of the eight teams in the tourney are local teams and the two that are from out of the area are not exactly contenders in their respective regions. I would think schools would like to spend their time in holiday tournaments playing against outside competition. This is one ugly field which should see Cooper and CCH playing for the title.

This has to be one of the shockers of the night from the Raceland Tourney.

Russell was minus three subs and one was there 6th man. Wish I could have seen this game, because the Skaggs kid is sure fun to watch.

Harrison County has a solid basketball team and it starts at the point guard position which is the head coach's son. The Breds are a strong team physically and they were aggressive in their full court and half court defense primarily in the first half. With Clark County way down, the 10th Region will be interesting to watch, but Brossart and Scott should be the top two teams in that region but Harrison will be one to watch. Holmes in the games that I have seen has not really been full court run and jump for 32 minutes, but they have been relying more on their have halfcourt man defense. They will pick up full court but will not trap first dribble or first pass as consistently as they have done in the past. They will jump a speed dribble here and there if the other team has a good point guard or depth in shooters. This is likely Coach Booher's best team in regards to playing half court defense because they can defend all positions in the half court as well as switching. As good as the Rice kid was last year, he was not the best defender and was far from physical. I have not seen much zone defense at all with this Holmes team. Holmes also has some depth at the guard spot. Glover is a good shooter off the bench and the Herndon kid is a really good on ball defender. The Pouncy kid off the bench will play solidly as well. Once Coston rounds into shape they may be one of the deepest teams at the guard spot.

Heard there were members of the new UK football staff in attendance to see Barker. Did he play?

The Holmes and Newport game was a knife fight in the post. Physical as heck, I thought. They need to watch for three things to clean the game up in my opinion. 1. Handchecking, especially on drives. 2. Off ball physicality. Including the bumping and grabbing of cutters and screening. 3. Hand use in the post. Guy playing post defense should not be allowed to put his hands in the back of the offensive post player. Allow the arm bar, but don't allow hands which can allow a kid to be steered in the post.

I heard that Ashland was up 21-0 with a minute left before the half, but got an interception and scored quickly to score and lead ballooned to 28-0. Holmes scored to cut the lead in the 3rd to 28-7 and was driving deep into Ashland territory with a chance to make it a game, but Scruggs fumbled and Ashland scored and it was curtains time.

Peterson is a nice player, but he seems to be the same player that he was three years ago. All they do with him is run a go route. He doesn't seem to have major D-1 speed. He uses his size well, but recruiters will have a tough time gauging him because he rarely runs any other route than a fade or go route. I really like the looks of the Scruggs kid. He runs really hard and if he gets into the clear, very few are going to catch him. The Vickers kid that Holmes had in looked like he had the makings of a solid future at QB. I still can't figure out what kind of offense Holmes is trying to run. It looks like it changes week to week. They were a kick off return from a running clock in the first half. Thankfully, Highlands played their reserves in the second half.

Yes, I may have stated it too strongly. There were whispers of this and it came from the north side of the river. I do not have any evidence.

That is a solid win for Dixie and gives them some juice under their new coach.

I was told that Holmes didn't practice Monday. Is this true? If so, I am guessing they were resting on their laurels of beating a very average Beechwood team.

It was probably a good thing that the game was called. It was not going to get any closer. Holmes's starting QB was out with an injury and a couple of players were sitting out for whatever reason. One was Peterson and another starter. Holmes got on the board first but returning a fumble for a TD, but SK answered with a drive and TD pass. Then SK tacked on a 2 point conversion. After that the rout was on. Holmes still has problems getting the right personnel on the field and gets silly penalties. I think Holmes heads to Cooper next week.

I thought Coach Lickert did a fantastic job at Holmes, in the brief time that he was there. They played clean all the way around. I didnt get a chance to see their first game, but heard there were a lot of penalties against the Dogs against Scott. They didn't have enough personnel on the field and had to burn timeouts and so forth. Serious lack of organization last night.

This is as bad a Beechwood team that I have seen as long as I can remember. Beechwood's Erdman got roughed up in pursuit of a run, then on the next offensive series he left with a leg injury. Holmes has a couple of kids who can make some plays. They still look very sloppy in getting personnel on the field and burn timeout after timeout. The facilities at Beechwood seem to be coming along nicely.

OG, call the city and complain. I firmly believe that the respective head coaches at Holy Cross and Holmes would agree with you and would love for someone to call. I wasnt there, but have not heard anything positive about Meinken this year. I know that the Reds Community Fund did a lot of work with the periphery of the field and more along the lines of the beautification of the place but the field itself is a mess. From what I have been told the city has practically wiped their hands clean of the place, but still holds rights over it so to speak. The upkeep of the field has deteriorated. It is set on an old landfill and is going to have some settling but the lip over 3rd base into left field almost looks dangerous. The city is doing minimal field work in regards to dressing it and so forth and both schools have had to maintain it but dont have full rights to take care of overall need. I think it may have something to do with the cuts at the public works department. However, I would not expect much from the city because they really do not provide for any recreation of substance for the youth of the city. They seemed far more concerned with coddling up to the yuppies from 4th Street to the river. In all honesty, what recreational services do they provide as outlets for the kids of Covington? They need to sell it or make it a nice place to play baseball for the kids. What they are doing now is nothing.

1. The new programs are a real bummer. I usually get one every year and keep them like old yearbooks. This year the programs seem to mirror the programs that UK is now using for their games. The new ones are a waste. 2. Stale atmosphere. 3. Talent is really down or young. 4. I think they should take the Litkenhaus Ratings and seed the tournament.

I'd imagine that the MC fans will be "Happy" when they name their new coach. I hope that they will be "Happy", but the shenanigans that go on there with their administration is hilarious. You have certain people in the "community" calling shots, including some back stabbing, no wonder there is a merry-go-round with their coaches. What is this, three coaches in four years? That is a solid system for building continuity. The bottom line is that they were overrated to start the season, and even though they had some solid wins, they were not the best team in the region. The opinions of the talent particularly close to the players was greatly inflated.
