The Cov Holmes starting pitcher was J Martin who went 6.2 innings but threw (at least in my opinion) far too many pitches 129.

 

Arnzen threw 6 strong innings of baseball but hurt himself in the first inning by dropping a pop fly ball to him on the mound.

 

I know I am going to take some heat on this and so be it but the City of Covington should be embarrassed by the condition of their City baseball field. Sad, sad, sad indeed.

Up 6-2 with two outs in the 7th and runners on 2nd and 3rd. CCH bunts it back to the Holmes pitcher and instead of going to first for the easy 3rd out he came home. Runner returned to 3rd. Bases-clearing double put CCH up 9-2.

What you didn't mention or maybe it wasn't told to you, was that Seattle Stein had home plate stolen when Reese laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that wasn't called for, as it was a straight steal of home that Stein had stolen in my opinion. Reese bunt was so perfect, that he honestly had to wait a second while Stein slide home before he started to run to first where he was safe with room to spare.

 

It was a wonderful play to see and it was the Highlight of the game!

I know I am going to take some heat on this and so be it but the City of Covington should be embarrassed by the condition of their City baseball field. Sad, sad, sad indeed.

OG, call the city and complain. I firmly believe that the respective head coaches at Holy Cross and Holmes would agree with you and would love for someone to call. I wasnt there, but have not heard anything positive about Meinken this year.

I know that the Reds Community Fund did a lot of work with the periphery of the field and more along the lines of the beautification of the place but the field itself is a mess.

From what I have been told the city has practically wiped their hands clean of the place, but still holds rights over it so to speak. The upkeep of the field has deteriorated. It is set on an old landfill and is going to have some settling but the lip over 3rd base into left field almost looks dangerous.

The city is doing minimal field work in regards to dressing it and so forth and both schools have had to maintain it but dont have full rights to take care of overall need.

I think it may have something to do with the cuts at the public works department.

However, I would not expect much from the city because they really do not provide for any recreation of substance for the youth of the city.

They seemed far more concerned with coddling up to the yuppies from 4th Street to the river. In all honesty, what recreational services do they provide as outlets for the kids of Covington?

They need to sell it or make it a nice place to play baseball for the kids. What they are doing now is nothing.

LC 1st I don't live in Covington so the Mayor and Commissioners could care less about what I have to say and yes I understand what Holmes and HC have done with that field, as a friend of mine is a coach at HC.

 

Whats funny to me at least, is with the talk of the new bridge to replace the current one, the City of Covington is crying all over the place about access to their city from it. I am old enough to remember when the City of Covington sold the Old Covington Ball Park (and indeed it was a beautiful place to watch or play the game) to build the current bridge and received a ton of money to replace it and then put a new sports complex on their old landfill at the current site.

 

I have always wondered whose pockets got lined with the money that the city made, with the selling of that piece of property because that "New Sports Complex" never was a nice place to play at, even back in the day, other than having lights on it!

 

And your correct IMO that all the City of Covington cares about, is from the river to Main Strauss. The small inner city communities inside the City limits they (meaning the City), could give a rats about and you know the rest. Sad, sad, sad indeed!

The Cov Holmes starting pitcher was J Martin who went 6.2 innings but threw (at least in my opinion) far too many pitches 129.

 

IF, and I emphasize IF, it's the same lefty that HHS faced on FRI evening in the Doc Morris, I would agree that 129 pitches is WAY too many. I am fairly confident he had over 120 pitches against HHS that evening. 250 pitches in the span of 5 days would be ridiculous for a HS kid.

 

IF it is not the same kid, pitching 2 separate kids over 120 pitches in the span of 5 days makes you wonder who is keeping track of such things.

What is Cappel? 3 soccer fields, 5 baseball/softball fields all with lights/one with a grass infield.

 

I think what has happened is that the city has leased Cappel to Knothole 28 for a very small amount and they have made improvements to the complex.

 

As a member of the Kenton County Rec Commission, we have similiar leases for Knothole 29, ISC, NKYFL, among others. We require a level of upkeep.

 

Sounds like the City should consider doing something similar to the two schools using the fields and let them split upkeep.......or give it to one and let them have the say.
