Loss of down fouls are Illegal handing the ball forward, illegal forward pass by A, Intentional grounding, Illegal touching and offensive pass interference. As I understand it, there are several states experimenting with different sideline control rules in an effort to get the coaches off the field (where they don't belong during the game for any reason). Florida is one of those, maybe VA is another. Their state interpreter is a guy from Charlottesville, he could probably more directly answer the question about VHSL rules. It's not that way in Kentucky. Unless of course the Referee invoked rule 9-9 which is open ended for any penalty "he considers equitable, including the awarding of a score". This is normally reserved for things that have happened by just can't be covered by rule, like a dog coming on the field and taking the ball (which has happened), a ball that exploded upon being punted (which has happened), a coach tackling a ball carrier running down the field untouched (which has happened), and a ball boy dropping a football on the field near the ball carrier after which the defense hollered fumble and dove on the ball while the runner scored untouched (which actually happened in Kentucky!). As Coach Claiborne used to say, funny things happen when an oblong ball hits a flat field.

Interestingly, what the state coaches committee has pushed for over the last few years is about making a list of certified fields and potential neutral or approved sites for the fourth round. An all weather surface would be required first and foremost. When we met, we wanted KHSAA to come up with a list of fields, and require the designated home team to select from those fields. It isn't just Ohio. A great many other state, including West Virginia to name another one, require their games to be played on an "approved" field. Unfortunately, I have disagree with cshs. It is more than just "if its too small its just too bad" philosophy. Games of the fourth round in particular should be played at places big enough to hold the crowds no matter who plays. Right now, as I understand, that plan is still under study and information on costs, etc. being gathered. With WKU moving away from I-AA and their field now being available for playoff games (including the finals in years that conflict with Louisville home games), that might prove to be the missing link in the future.

You are better than that. Look at their web site. Here is the rotation Tell me when three plays 8. That's just smoke and mirrors to justify objection. From what I was told, the "draw" was only for 2006 and only to start a rotation. The way I see it, there really are no regions anymore. The administrators, coaches, etc. had differing objectives, some wanting less travel, some wanting different pairings in rounds 3 and 4 (rotation, etc.) You can't have BOTH fixed regions and rotation of pairings in third and fourth rounds. It won't work and still meet all of their objectives.

Wah, wah. Take the half day off. Since you won't have to take off any time if you make it to the finals and the two of the other three classes will have to by playing Friday during the day. The TV exposure would be great for all the programs. And they could probably play the game just as well if there were no fans anyway. It's about the kids not the fans.

For every team in a traditionally strong district that dislikes it (and all of them don't agree one way or another even in those districts from the ones I have talked to) there is a team or teams in another district that does. It's (tournament format) probably something that you can never get better than 50% approval on. The school administrators wanted a change, less travel, etc., they got what they wanted, or at least they thought they wanted it. So let's watch it a year or two (especially in 2007 when smaller districts mean naturally more travel anyway since they are more spread out) and see if people like or don't...

Couldn't be further from the truth. Frankly, from my own observations, the success of the sweet sixteen financially has nothing at all to do with what specific schools are playing. Rather, its success is built on years of 6 to 8000 people who don't have a rooting interest, buy tickets in the preceding fall when no one has even played a game. That type of neutral audience is what is missing from every other KHSAA state championship including football and girls basketball, and from events like the All A classic. While the fan groups are nice when a given team wins, what separates the Sweet 16 from everything else is it is the ONE AND ONLY chance for folks in this country to see a single class, all in one pile, championship tournament and the memories that are constantly created.

Let me see if I see this right - The cream came to the top as it always does. The four surviving teams in each class are all pretty good teams. Teams didn't have to travel as much early in the playoffs. Teams from near each other played early to generate ability for fans to see games easier. The one vs. four games in the first round weren't very good, and never are. I am still searching for the "real" problem in the revised playoff brackets. It's a playoff system. Bottom line, no matter who you play, you have to win four times in a month in a row to play in the final game. I hate to say it, maybe this isn't so bad.

Incorrect understanding. Thank heavens the individual sports (track, cross country, swimming, tennis, golf and wrestling) do NOT pay for the medals and trophies. That would make sports that already lose money, lost even bigger.

Bull. I thought so too. When I saw one, I thought it was terrible. Then I measured it against an old one. It was the same size. Region was actually bigger when we got it at region. The new ones have a lot more wood. And that old fashioned state logo (that really looked like it was the Kentucky seal on a piece of wood shaped like Virginia).... But what made my mind up was when I looked at the NCAA trophies, like UKs, etc. Those new trophies look like them and don't have those old plastic pieces that break off as soon as you touch them. Ours looked pretty good when we I saw them at soccer anyway.

I am pretty sure from my past experience that the local policies prevail even in playoffs. The only way KHSAA would, I think, get involved, would be if the quantity of reserved seats were such that the visitors had no shot at getting admitted. Most high schools, even those that sell reserve, don't have a large quantity, its just a "protected" location from what I am told.

My guess is that the NFHS mark is more about the playing rules, then it gets more specific with the brand. I would say with a near 6 figure sponsorship from Rawlings, it is more than just a suggestion.

Rawlings brand is to be used all five rounds. No specific model, but it is required to be Rawlings.

The stadium has been on hold from what I understand, for the third round, since the playoff revisions were announced in May.

Just more proof that despite the opinions of some, there are a lot of options for fans today. And playing these rivalry games (built in rivalries due to in district play) MAY just be the thing to make people come late when they didn't come at the start.

Looks to me like they were looking out for the rest of the state while some of you Rock fans are scared to death you might lose in the second or third round instead of playing in the finals. Let's see how it goes. In some parts of the state, they are going to play later than normal, some earlier. It's called change and get used to it. Also, what you call excitement, most school superintendents (who don't have access to donations, scholarships and financial aid) call expensive and asked for relief. It just depends on what green or rose colored glasses you choose to wear. And at least next year they gave us two weeks (10 and 11) not to play district games so that this kind of thing won't happen. I can only assume, but without the burden of game contracts (which kept them from doing it this year), looks like this is the only year the instant rematch can happen. To me, it wasn't exactly clueless, but in a couple of years of looking at it, I may agree with you, or .. you may agree with me.

Incorrect. Attendance in Lexington area games was up according to media accounts. Built in rivalries should always help attendance. If weather is good, etc. I am sure there will be actual numbers put out when they get in reports, and not just rely on one game and one short sighted observation. I happen to like the new format, even with its occasional mismatches. Ever since 4 teams began coming to the playoffs there have been some first round blowouts (and second). What happens now though is that you get statewide representation instead of the same old folks advancing. What hasn't been talked about on here is the chance for some parity. I am sure the traditional powers with somewhat of a cakewalk to the third round don't like the format. But others who haven't even sniffed the third or fourth round before probably like it a lot. I suspect, after a couple of years of trying it, it will still be about 50% approval (the new successful like it, the old successful, now not so successful, won't)

The 6class proposal was in the works four years before there was ever even a proposal dealing with financial aid divisions much less the split. The proposal had to be done this year because the old alignment was expiring.

I personally don't care how the coaches would vote. They need to just shut up and coach in the division placed instead of trying to lobby for some path to the finals that is easier for themselves. You still have to win five games in five weeks. Whether you play the strong team in week 2, 3, 4 or 5, its about on the field performance. The pitiful part is now an entire legion of coaches have another excuse for not winning.

Be careful not to confuse your opinion with the facts. The public school superintendents were largely behind the new change, wanting to address travel concerns as well as getting tired of being beaten by the same old teams.

Sorry, but the field was NOT in good condition. The top layer was very soggy. Sad to say I didn't get the word it was cancelled and went over there. Several spots (worn by football) were terrible. Won't really be much better this weekend but will at least be dry. About time Bengals/Toyota turfed that place.
