I played at Pikeville in the 90's. We usually had about 50 kids come out which is good for 1a. My senior year I started on defense and can only remember about 3 guys who went both ways so it can be done.

Pikeville will IMO be much improved next season. Though we lose some key starters,we have some kids that are ready to step. Plus we have some talented freshmen coming in next year that can step right in and contribute. Our coach has had a year under his belt and the kids have an entire off season to learn his system.

Whats not special about high school football? Its the lights,its the band,all the guys who used to play on the sidelines telling old "war" stories. The heat of the Pike co. bowl and the bitter chill of the playoffs. The players girlfreinds with their class jackets and jerseys on,even after the theyve married and been out of high school for 10 years. Watching the little kids behind the bleechers tossing the football around and wondering who of that group will be playing under those lights in a few years. Its Pikeville-Belfry week. Its Pikeville-Beechwood week if were lucky enough to get that far. Its knowing that even though youre playing days are over that you are now and always part of a special fraternity. Its seeing youre children play, and it gives you more joy than when you were out there playing. Shall I go on?

They need a different offense IMO. Against any 'good' team we played this year NCC,Belfry,Somerset they were not fooled by all the misdirection. That offense was completly ineffective in the Red Zone all year.

I dont know about dropping districts altogether but less teams in a district is not a bad thing because teams can schedule more quality non distirct opponents without the constraints of so many district games to deal with. This will in turn make every team better come playoff time.

If consolidation occurs they will just have to make adjustments just like in the basketball districts when it occurs. Im sure geographically it would make sense for Hazard to go to dist. 7 but speaking selfishly and not to offend anyone form Jenkins,but i would rather lose to Hazard then beat Jenkins because we would learn more from Hazard win or lose.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again. I beleive that the coaches have done this to try and elminate the problem of 2,3and 4a schools who drop down a class to play smaller schools and 'cherry pick' I call it. What this really benefits is the smaller 1a schools who are truly on a little more of a level playing field with this proposal.It seems to me the only ones complaining about this are from schools that have to go up a class in this.

Actually Whitesburg and Fleming-Neon combined to make Letcher Central. So what would LC be? 3a or 4a?

Sheldon Clark gets better every week, I look for Belfry to win but not by as much as the last time.

I think only having this many teams per district really gives these teams opputunities to play better teams out side the district, of course theyre will be coaches that schedule cupcakes. A team could actulally be better come playoff time under this format than under the current one. Plus it looks to me like in 1a these are the true 1a schools and not glorified 2a-3a schools that have played in 1a in years past. The reason for this realignment IMO is that too often 2a-3a-and even 4a schools have dropped down a class when they werent competitive in their own anymore and mopped the floor with smaller schools. I agree some have had significant attendance drops especially in East KY. But i beleive it is the attempt of this proposal to stop this from happening. Will it work? Probably not,but at least they have made an attempt.

Ive always said that the Lexington,Louisville,and some suburban Cincinnati schools need to have their own class and play for their own championship. The much smaller East Ky schools would have a better chance at adavancing instead of having to play glorified 2a & 3a schools. This would truly bring balance back to the playing field in this state. Ohio has a similar system with the Cleveland,Columbus and Cinci schools all in their own division I beleive. I say why not?

Im not aiming this at you or anything. If you are who I think you are, youre always pretty fair to all the teams in the county. But,with that said there has always been a little bit of anti-pikeville sentiments at that paper. Its not as bad as it used to be but its still there IMO.

Tell you what, Go ask coach Haywood if he ever takes us lightly. Thats all Im saying.
