  1. If we're picking the best player in the league in 2012, it was clearly Mike Trout.
  2. If I'm a Marlins fan, I would rather keep Reyes and Johnson, but to dump Buehrle's contract and get talent in return, those guys had to be included, I assume. Bonifacio is no major loss ... if he didn't steal a lot of bases, people would wonder why he was even playing. The catcher swap does little, either way.
  3. Whoever wins Murray-Caldwell will be on the road, regardless of seeding.
  4. Not a horrible trade for the Marlins from a talent/money standpoint, but given the franchise's history, it's a PR disaster.
  5. I'm picking Bell County for one reason ... the long road trip, especially since Central traditonally doesn't travel well too far out of town. And Bell is definitely the #2 team in Class 3A. I think they're the only team with a significant chance to knock off Central.
  6. Turnovers decided the first game ... Murray had five and Caldwell had zero. The same was true in reverse last year, so I would say turnovers will be a big deciding factor. If Murray holds on to the football and moves it, they could wear down Caldwell's defense.
  7. I heard Russellville had a bunch of turnovers but haven't read or heard any details ...
  8. Moving it to Valley would have to be done over the cold, dead bodies of Stan Hardin and Lloyd Gardner.
  9. If UK wants Smart, they better pony up ...
  10. I don't think anyone said that. All I'm saying is that Monroe has quite a lot of gap to close.
  11. Maybe so, but it isn't like the game was close year. Tilghman won 37-0 and outgained Monroe by a better than 3-1 margin, holding the Falcons to barely over 100 yards of offense. That's a big gap to make up, even with 18 returning starters.
  12. I'm told he made a comment that was interpreted as critical of a no-call on what he apparently thought should have been pass interference.
  13. Everyone makes the playoffs, and sectional pairings are determined by blind draw. Theoretically, you could have the best two teams in the state meet in a first-round game instead of sectional final, at the very least.
  14. If the texts and Twitter feeds I saw were correct, one of Murray's best players (a defensive tackle) was ejected from the game for throwing a punch. That would be a big loss going into next week's game at Owensboro Catholic.
  15. Reynolds' defense at 3B is truly bad. One of the reason the Orioles' promotion of Machado to play 3B was so successful was that he was a plus defender and a vast improvement over Reynolds, who moved to 1B.
  16. Barring a miracle, Owensboro will have the top seed in District 1, with Lone Oak second and Madisonville third.
  17. Because the Arizona Fall League is where the game's best prospects play. Hamilton is playing with and against the best minor leaguers in the game. It's part of the developmental process.
  18. Bottom line ... Owensboro Catholic has beaten a good 4A team in Owensboro, one that has beaten two ranked teams in Lafayette and Lone Oak. I would say that puts the Aces in the conversation in 2A.
  19. I'll tell you what is entertaining ... it's guys from the central and eastern parts of the state that down teams from the west for "not playing anybody." Owensboro Catholic has beaten an Owensboro team that some think should be ranked in 4A and has beaten two ranked teams, Lafayette and Lone Oak. The Aces are consistently a contender in 2A and don't have to apologize for the schedule, which has all of the bigger schools in town on it. South Spencer appears to down by its standards but has traditionally been a solid program. We've been hearing this kind of stuff for years, especially after Lone Oak got hammered by Lexington Catholic in the 4A title game in 2007. Each year after that, we kept hearing how the 4A title game was going to be a blowout, but the next few years had close, competitive games. And the west has won its fair share of state titles the last few years.
  20. Crazy, crazy game ... Murray led 21-7 early in the fourth quarter, then Caldwell scored, recovered a fumble on the kickoff and scored to tie it. Murray was moving the ball, then had a snap go over the quarterback's head in shotgun for a big loss. After a punt, Caldwell drove and kicked the winning field goal with a little over a minute left. Murray had five turnovers, including three lost fumbles.
  21. C ... If the Reds are going to take a step forward, Mesoraco has to show he is the real thing. He didn't get a great chance to do it this year, but he didn't do all that much to merit more time, either. Mesoraco/Hanigan will work just fine. 1B ... Votto has the entire offseason to get healthy ... he won't be an issue. 3B ... I would try to find some insurance for Frazier. He can hold the spot for a year or two, and he'll provide some bang for the buck, even though a guy with his K-walk ratio probably isn't going to be a long-term success. LF ... Ludwick had a revival year, but are you really going to count on it again? SP ... Rotation is fine, and there is some depth in the system. RP ... Chapman is so dominant in the role that it's hard to take him out of there. I would probably leave him as the closer.
