Pitching as good if not better, defense probably not quite as good, other than Both Moses kids, Root, and Witt hitting a bit more inconsistent.

Going to rant for a second....Get tired of Williamsburg not getting much credit...I've seen alot of games and teams this year...I bet every team I've seen would love to have a Shelly and Witt on the mound, and if there is a better defensive catcher who hits like Root I haven't seen him. I bet both the Moses boys would help any team as well. Gee this Williamsburg team just mught be decent afterall....lol

Williamsburg had no problems, just gave the seniors and some juniors a day off. Since the Jackets haven't had alot of JV games this was a good idea by Coach Strcklin. Not to gloat but critisize the Burg all ya want, we'll be at Applebees May 5th!

I agree. Paintsville is an excellent ball club.

Jackets maximize 4 hits tonight as Paintsville folded under pressure. Root made two clutch throws for put outs, Shelly came in when Witt went down and pitched well.Jackets hit in the clutch tonight with Root and Witt driving in big runs, and Hurst laying down a great safety squeeze. Overall great team effort by the Jackets!

Corbin takes both, 4-1 in the first game, 12 - 1 in the second. Bright spot for Williamsburg was Aaron Root who went 4 for 6 on the night, with a double. Root was in relief in the first game retiring 3 of 4 batters faced. Hamlin pitched well for the Hounds in game 1, and Headrick took game 2. Too many mistakes and missed opprtunities for Williamsburg tonite.

That may be tough for Moses as he is most likely to be playing an inside receiver most of the time. On the offensive side look for the ball to go to Moses, Steven Taylor, Aaron Brock, and Daniel Petitte. I'm not saying he will approach Root's ungodly numbers at linebacker, but, Coach Root worked alot with Pettite at LB in the spring and seems pretty excited about his range. He is a big kid at I guess about 6'3" and 220 lbs. and also will line up at TE. Coach Herron looks very comfortable with the play calling in light of Woods retirement. Ryan Moses will have to step up as the QB, but he did look pretty good in the spring game. Doesn't have Fraziers big arm, but is accurate on the underneath stuff. With Abner and Rollins anchoring the line, the Jackets should be strong on both fronts. The schedule is much tougher this year and should help a young Jacket team mature towards the playoffs. For the most Part the coaching staff is intact, with the exception of Woods retirement. I expect Herron will assume a bigger role in the OC area, Hatcher is solid as the DC, and Having an old head like Coach Root around gives alot of maturity and experience to the staff. I look for a 5-5 to 6-4 regular season, and then maybe a surprise or two in the playoffs.

Don't know how this will go down, but I will say this, Williamsburg scratches and claws to the end. Getting great senior leadership from Root and Witt, timely hittting by those two as well as Ryan and Will Moses. The great thing about this team is they have a really good "no stars" attitude. I really enjoy watching how gritty this team has been. Don Strickland and staff are doing a great job, and the additional help from retired Cumberlands coach Terry Stigall with the pitching, and David Root with hitters and catchers has been sloid. With Shelly and Witt on the mound, and with the development of Root and Will Moses toeing the rubber, the pitching staff is rounding into form. Right now, Witt, both the Moses boys, and Aaron Root have been tearing the cover of the ball, and some timely clutch hitting by Conlin and Teague, have made this offense much better. I look for a fun night at the ballpark this week when these two meet.

The block at the plate was outstanding by the Root kid. I know Harlanites will say he was safe but having the clearest view was the ump and he made the call. Root is as tough as nails and one of the best defensive catchers I've seen in some years. He definitely brings his linebacker mentality to the catcher's position.

Yes it was the first round of the All "A". Williamsburg fought back hard with clutch hitting and pitching. Witt and Shelley pitched well, Root behind the plate called a great game as the Middlesboro Jackets were off balance at the plate most of the night. Clutch Hit by Freshman Ryan Moses in the 9th to plate Will Moses for the win. Team is getting good senior leadership from Witt and Root. Root definitely brings his football intensity and toughness to the diamond.

As some of you know, Root is also a standout catcher on the baseball team. He has just been given the opportunity to play in a summer collegiate league with the Columbus, Ohio Rattlers, a midwestern traveling team. Have heard he may be getting looks from scouting services. Best of luck to this fine young man!

Although not as big time (yet...lol) as some mentioned here, the Root family has a pretty good athletic tradition down in Williamsburg. Aaron Root will be playing this fall at the University of the Cumberlands, he has 2 uncles who made it as high as triple a in baseball in the early 60's, his dad was a standout at Carson Newman in the late 70's, and he has a younger brother who will be a freshman at Williamsburg this fall.

What a great thread! Why do I love H.S. football.....reasons are beyond the number of grains of sand on a beach but here's a few... It's Pure. Having played from kindegarten to the pros it was the purest time of my life. They say you learn all your life lessons by 5 but I beg to differ...most of my life lessons came through high school football. It's the last time in your life you play for the fun of it and are truly an amatuer. You can say what you want about D3 being purely an amatuer situation, but its really not. I've coached at all levels and truly the most fun I had is at High School. It is such a joy seeing those kids mature and having a chance to help mold their futures is so rewarding. It is really humbling for a coach to see what these kids go through just to be part of the team, and wear the school colors with pride, and to see the un - abashed joy from taking the field every friday night. Its community. It amazes me to see how communities get behind these programs. Sure not all do, but having been to places like Williamsburg, Somerset, Harlan, Evarts,Corbin, and seeing the way people turn out is unbelievable. I grew up in Texas and crowds there were great, but to see what goes on in this small area of Kentucky (which is not a great football state....go ahead beat me up on this but having recruited all over, east Tn. and east ky are average at best) is absolutely amazing. Plus when you read the posts on BGP it proves my point about community. Seen pretty good arguments on here...lol Lastly, lest I write an epic tome here, which none of you would care to be subjected to....it's America. Yea, corny I know, but where else to you see the struggle, hearbreak, joy and triumph of the spirit, and the realization of the dream, as you do in HS football.Isn't that what life in America is all about? Overcoming adversity, team, effort, blood, sweat, and tears....man I'm getting fired up....lets kick off now!!!!

I was just curious, Williamsburg is a single A school with about 220 students in the high school. They have had 3 kids so far sign to play college football, with a 4th, Chase Hamlin, having the potential to sign as well. How many class A schools in the state are having similar results. I think I was told there are 50 kids in the senior class and about 23 are boys so doing the math here thats aprrox. 18% of the male class signing football scholarships. Jerry Herron and his staff deserve commendation for producing that kind of class. Thats pretty impressive to an old fart like me!

It's now official. Aaron Root, stand out LB for Williamsburg High School signed his official letter of intent today with the University of the Cumberlands Patriots. Congratulations Aaron and for us Jacket fans we look forward to getting to see this fine young man for 4 more years. Also signing today from Williamsburg was AJ Jusino, an offensive and defensive lineman, not sure where he'll end up in college, but UC may have gotten a sleeper here. AJ has a nice motor. Congratulations AJ....make us Jacket fans proud!

Root was supposed to sign with the University of the Cumberlands on Feb. 14th, but school canelation put that off. As I understand, he will be signining his letter of intent on Thursday the 22nd. I've heard Union a few times with Hamlin, but also that he is considering walking on at UK to punt. I look forward to watching Root at Cumberlands, the kid is a gamer and a ton of fun to watch.

Concord is D2 and in the (I believe this is correct) West Va. Intercoligete Athletic Conference. Congrats to Thomas, a fine young man and quality player!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the South Oldham folks and especially this young man's family.

Having no stake in Corbin football I might not ought to weigh in here. But having met and talked with Coach Jewell and having seen the way he treats and cares for his plyers, school and community, I think you all are pretty blessed with having this guy as a coach. I wouldn't have minded at all entrusting my son's athletic career to him if we were residents of that area.
