You're going to get everyone's best shot as the state #1. The 3rd game in 4 days for Holmes. You're going to be flat sometime and it probably cost them tonight. Boone has a nice team and I'm sure they had a great game but this win is probably not a bad thing for the Bulldogs either.

I wouldn't totally agree with that. What if the ball goes out of bounds, the whistle blows and then the horn goes off a full second or two later? One of the officials SHOULD have been checking the clock but neither one did. They will come together and estimate the amount of time between the whistle and horn and put that time back on the clock.

What do you mean by "decrepancies"? If you're saying that the coach was yelling for a timeout and the ref didn't see or hear him or had to turn around to verify that it was the coach calling for the timeout, then you're incorrect. (However, a good ref will keep one eye on the bench in late game situation in which a timeout is likely because it is possible that they will not be able to hear) If you're saying that the decrepancy occurs because there was a substantial delay between the whistle and the clock stopping, then you're correct.

Since everyone will likely stop when the horn goes off but no time should have gone off the clock, I think you have to reset the clock and play the play over.

A lot of timekeepers (especially inexperienced ones) will get caught up in watching a game and completely forget to start the clock. I would say (hopefully) that most of the time it is unintentional. If that happens, all the refs can do is guess and do the best they can to reset the clock properly.

No, but if it takes you a full second recognize a whistle and react to it, then you should not be keeping a game clock, or driving a car, or walking in crowded areas, etc.

If your reaction time is that slow, you shouldn't be keeping a game clock. There are two times when it is clear and a ref should add time. 1. Anytime a "significant" amount of time runs off after a whistle. One or both (and definitely if there are 3) of the officials should be able to locate the clock within a half second of a whistle. If another second or more runs off, he can clearly see it--reset it. 2. If a whistle sounds and then the horn goes off, clearly, after the whistle. There would probably need to be a half second or more delay to put time back up. Of course, this is usually only a problem late in a game or quarter but IF it's obvious, it needs to be changed. However, there are some places when "incompetence" or just plain-old "homers" run the clock.

ES is correct. Also, the bb program is under another transition. Coach Herald was hired so late that nothing was accomplished during the summer and a lot of your basketball players play football at a school like Bellevue. So, in mid-November he's getting to see his full roster for the first time. It's not the turnover of coaches at Bellevue that's the problem, it's the late hires and resulting rough transition period that does the most damage (and that's happened 3 of the last 4 years).

For the small school it's a pretty nice gate an a chance to measure yourself against a bigger school. For the bigger school, it's typically a break from the conference schedule, a game to fill an open date, or just a nearby team to fill a spot and save on travel. The DIII school's in NKY have a harder time scheduling than you might think. After your 14 conference games, a holiday tournament, and the All "A", you still have 6-8 games to fill. Hardly any of the DI schools will play you and most of the DII schools will not. So, you're left scheduling small schools from Cincinnati, the 10th region, or the 8th region which will bring very little to your gate. So, if you get a team a mile down the road to play you, both sides will likely agree (especially consider the schedules were made when gas was $4/gallon and you have another reason to do it).

I'd say most every coach is "blessed" when they have talent. Other than that, I don't think you really know any of the situations well enough to comment as much as you did but I'll just say most of you "insight" is way off.

I'm pretty sure he won conference championships at Walnut Hills and Beechwood. That's pretty horrible. Leave your personal bias out of you posts and you won't look so bad. BTW, what talent are you looking at in "Tiger Land" that leads you to believe that they should be any better than they are?

I totally agree. It doesn't matter if there are 2 or 3 officials, they should be consistent throughout the game. The 3 officials will see more but they shouldn't change during a game.

I think we're in the same line of thinking. Whether you have 2 officials or 3, there is only one ref on the baseline to call a block/charge on a lay-up. Yes, they obviously see more but it is usually away from the ball--like you said, they have a better angle.

I think the term "missed call" here is all relative. In terms of action on/around the ball (the ball-handler, the shooter, the rebounder) you aren't going to get any better calls with 3 refs instead of 2. There will always be ONE official watching that ball--it's just a matter of what they are or aren't going to call. What you add with a 3rd official is the off-the-ball fouls and weakside fouls. With 3 officials, you will see more illegal screens called, pushing/holding away from the ball going for rebounds, etc.

The KHSAA is going to turn the regionals into fast-pitch softball. Find one great pitcher and it could be over. However, I do like the 16 team state tournament--it just makes sense for everyone. As a general rule though, why do you take a sport that is not meant to be played everyday (basketball) and play 3 games within 24 hours (potentially), but you take a sport that is meant to be played everyday and play 3 games in 8 days?

Beechwood led by 10 with 4 minutes left. Seemed like Beechwood let off the gas with about 5 minutes left, then tried to turn it back on with 2 minutes left. Many costly turnovers for Beechwood in the last 3 or 4 minutes. Neither team played very well but Newport finished with the final flury. Not sure how Beechwood beat Highlands.

What if it hits him in the head, is in the air, then he's fouled, then the ball goes in the basket?

Team A is being pressed by Team B. Player A1 throws a long pass to A2 who is running down court toward Team A's basket. As the ball arrives, player B1 reaches to deflect the pass and hits A2 (not a flagarant foul). As B1 fouls A2, the ball hits A2 in the head and goes in the basket. What's the call?

Actually, it means absolutely nothing the entire year. Just wondering if anyone was ready to call them a "Top 5" team.
