How Many FTs Should Be Awarded?

Featured Replies

A1 grabs B1 and throws him to the ground. Official blows whistle , calls flagrant intentional foul on A1. A1 is ejected.

When there appears to be a fight brewing, the coach for A1 comes onto the floor without being beckoned by the official.

B's team has two coaches(head coach and one assistant) and 6 bench players come onto the floor. None are charged with fighting.

You're the official. How many free throws are to be attempted by each team and why? Any ejections?

You have two free throws for B1. The coaches can come to the floor and help separate their players. Each player that leaves the bench area and comes onto the floor are ejected, it does not matter if they say anything or whether they fight, they are all ejected. B1 two free throws and the ball.

This sounds like something that would happen up in the 9th region. Or maybe the 62nd now.

Sorry I miss read the situation.

Each player leaving the bench is charged with flagrant fouls and ejected. And a maximum of one indirect technical foul on the head coach for not having his bench under control. All count towards the team total fouls except the indirect on the coach.

disregard this post.

That is half right! B1 does get 2 free throws for the intentional foul on him. But also the Coach from Team B gets a bench technical for the players leaving the bench and coming on the floor. The coach can come and separate players, but players can not. So all 6 are ejected, and the coach gets 1 technical total. Team A will Also shoot 2 free throws. And Team A will get the ball out of bounds at the half court line!

Now if any of those players got into the fight, the coach would receive a T for each that participated. Harsh I know but if it wasn't we would have kids flying off the bench and getting into fights every night. This way the coach will try to control their bench a lot more.

There is a current protest going on in CA over an incident very similar to this. The officials awarded 2 FTs for every coach and player from the bench that came onto the floor. One kid made 15 out of 16 FTs and it completely changed the outcome of the game.

Ejections: A1 and Team A coach, Team B's two coaches and all 6 players. All are charged with a flagrant technical foul and disqualified.

Now in regards to free throws: Neither team will shoot any free throws.

Rational: Head Coach A and B offset, Assist. Coach B and the 6 players (all bench personnel) offset the flagrant foul by A1. Here's the math: two free throws would have been awarded to B1 for A1's flagrant foul but these free throws are offset by Assist Coach B and 6 B players entering the court (if the number of each team's offenders entering the court and not participating is unequal, a maximum of two free throws are awarded to the offended team) and Head Coach A and B offset. Therefore, no free throws and proceed at point of interruption.

Rule 10-4.5 Says a player can't leave the confines of the bench during a fight or when a fight may break out.

Head coaches both charged with flagrant T's and ejected.

The assistant and the 6 players are all ejected but since "only one technical-foul penalty is administered regardless of the number of offenders", team A will only receieve 2 FT's as a result.

So, to shoot these in order, B1 gets two FT's for the intentional foul.

Team A gets two FT's. The T's on the head coaches offset, and team A receives two FT's for the one indirect as a result of the bench personnell coming on the floor. Team A will receive the ball for a division-line throw-in opposite the table after the last FT.

Both head coaches, B's assistant and the six subs from B are all ejected.

The FT's for the indirect and the intentional don't offset b/c the intentional foul occurred prior to the fight so the penalties can't offset each other.

Correct. They were not Double technicals so they do not offset.

So then who coaches the team? The five players left on the floor and maybe a couple kids left on the bench? Some teams only have two coaches sit on the bench.

There are usually plenty of coaches in the stands.

You will get different thoughts from different officials regarding coaches coming on the floor during a fight. Some officials will not call a T and assume that the coach is automatically beckoned if a fight breaks out.

At least people who think they are coaches.
