After the third round, to impartial observers the 4A playoffs were over. You know that. Besides, like I said, Tandy was eliminated in the first round.

1) It was obviously good enough for him to be 3rd team all state. I think if Christian County wins state instead of suffering a first round upset, there is NO question that the coaches in this state would have selected him 1st team for leading the first 'state' team to a 4A title in forever. 2) There is no rationalization for the 'spread it around' mentality. It is an irrational mindset in my opinion. The best player is the best player. I think, in this case, it was considered to be the case that there was far and away one best player in the state this year in Doug Beaumont. I think Chase Minnifield was another legitimate opinion, but Beaumont got the benefit of direct competition with another contender, Vic Anderson, not just on the same field but head-to-head and he was the resounding winner of the matchup. 3) I would like reitterate that IMO, Nick Petrino deserved 1st team all district.

Like I said, if Tandy wins state and Petrino doesn't, he isn't 1st team all state. And the district awards come out beofre the end of the playoffs. If you want an example of competitve athletics with a clear and transparent desire to spread the hardware around, look at the Heisman versus the Maxwell.

Or maybe it was an effort to spread a little hardware around, considering that Petrino was a lock to at least be 3rd team all-state. Would Petrino have been 1st team all state if Tandy or Ammons had won a title and Trinity had lost to Male? I don't think so, and a 3rd team all-state being snubbed for district honors is hardly a shock. I think Petrino deserved to win, and I think he's a top notch HS QB. But it doesn't have to be a conspiracy.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I think it was clear by the way the games played out that there were better teams.

They have a state runner-up trophy, which proves nothing other than they advanced past the teams on their side of the bracket and lost in the title game. Henry Clay got a regional trophy... ask Trinity if they're better than Male.

There was a lot to like about last year's team over this year's, and the other way around. It'd be tought to seperate them, Trinity had great skill seniors on both sides last year, but this year saw some SICK sophomore play.

Manual played T way tougher than Ryle, and didn't let them run it up 28-0. Beat PRP and Warren Central. But no love, huh.

I had a similar down-time, except of course earlier exits from the playoffs. But while we didn't have pads practices during the playoff season once we were out, we were of course free to lift and many did. I must admit that I strenuously avoided running during the month of November. And while lifting and conditioning and the grind of the season is tough, it's a lot easier when the goals are not only lofty but constantly being realized. It's one thing to work hard to win titles and championships when you KNOW those goals are not only possible, but by past performance and weekly testing probable; it's another when your team has never tasted those things, and anyone with eyes knows that this year isn't going to be any different.

Not to mention that I consider the four-year senior players at a school like Atherton to have a dedication level proven beyond the players at any school with any level of success, and not a lot to show for it. It would be totally classless and unfair to claim that the Trinity players just 'want it' more than a team like that, and I don't think anyone would purposefully do that. But it does get under my skin when proponents of a powerhouse claim that their success is due ONLY to the will of their players, when it's clear in my mind that it's easier to go out every Friday for a team that wins 10+ games a year than to suit up for a squad that hopes for that win total in a decade.

I considered that part of the community and program advantages. The kids don't sign up for Trinity football because they're all morally superior than kids that sign up to play elsewhere, the program and community instills a dedication (on top of the fact that committing to the program anywhere does require an elite level of dedication from individuals involved, this is comparing apples to apples not apples to oranges if you understand me.) As to the last part, the numbers are a constant, too. And while cycles are less pronounced than at a school with less of all of those ingredients, they ARE there. Just ask Male, a program that certainly doesn't have the cycles of, say, a Louisville Central. Trinity is the best program in the state IMO, and you can ask RP or TD- I'm no Rock hater. I just think that you have to acknowledge that they aren't getting by with what would be considered average talent in the rest of the state. Not big time next level guys, but not average.

Is Trinity loaded like a team from Dade county? No. They're not even loaded like a Male. But 'average' kids? Don't feed me that. Trinity doesn't have the star wattage of many D-I kids. Instead, they have a LOT of players that aren't at that level, but are a cut above the average level. Part of that is the coaching, because you can cultivate an average talent to above average but short of spectacular. Part of it is numbers. Trinity's biggest strengths are the program itself, the coaching, the community (both at the school and the greater catholic community in the metro area) and, yes, numbers. Doesn't take away from what they are, and it doesn't make them something they aren't (a D-I football factory) but it does mean that I haven't seen a lot of 'average' kids starting for Trinity.

It'd sure be swell if you could run me a copy of that tape...
