  1. I agree about Coach Baker. He got a bad deal at Breathitt. Brought the program back from the ashes and just when they were poised to contend, they got rid of him. I for one am very glad to see him get another shot at the head coaching ranks. He's a good coach and deserves the success he will no doubt earn!
  2. Congratulatins to Belfry and hope you go all the way. I think you will have no real problems. Breathitt had a good team this year but some soft spots. Belfry has a great team and no apparent weaknesses.
  3. Actually I just read in the local paper today that the coaches and school officials have been reading this thread and are considering not even making the trip since it's a forgone conclusion as to the outcome! Look, Belfry may very well win, but Breathitt kids are too tough to lay down and let anyone "roll" over them.
  4. I think I remember something from a few years ago where sports programs have to pay so much per mile and so much per driver for away games ( at least at Breathitt in their policy or something). So the guy who said there's probably not that much difference in cost is probably correct. Now Breathitt's Football and Basketball programs definately take in enough cash to rent some buses but they don't. I like seeing the yellow buses all cleaned up and their black rims freshly painted as 5 or 6 of them pull out of the parking lot heading for Louisville. Gives you a real sense of pride here in the mountains.
  5. I haven't seen Russell play in a couple of years but obviously they have a very good team this year and it should be a good game. But.... if they had trouble with Mason's running and passing game, it's a very good sign for Breathitt. The Bobcats have really improved through out the year and as far as runners go, Channing Fugate keeps getting better and better. This kid is good and only a sophomore. You'll see what I mean Friday night. As for the passing game, Colby Fugate is as accurate as anyone I have seen in a while, and he can scamper also. They are surrounded by a very solid cast and should come out with a W. 34-21.
  6. It's not so much that Holcomb is a nice guy (he is a class guy though) but it's not smart to leave your prime time players in and risk an injury when the game is well in hand, and he is a very smart guy.
  7. Cawood never threw in the towel and they had a running back that decided to run over people in the second half.
  8. Breathitt edged Somerset 21-14. Somerset outplayed Breathitt a little in the first half, striking on a long TD to Cole. But Breathitt hung in and had a good third quarter.
  9. Congratulations to Coach Hall. Competitive school closer to home for him. Proof that good people do eventually come out ok.
  10. I don't see Jackson City listed on this thread anywhere. Why would you throw that out there?
  11. I wouldn't be surprised if their banker benifactor and long time supporter who passed away recently, left them a bundle.
  12. I'll be watching June Buchanan and Elliott County Thursday evening and mostly hang out in the concourse Friday!
  13. Not sure but of the 15 that made it, 14 were in attendance according to the radio guys with only two seniors, Hicks from Hazard and Hayes from Breathitt. I think that just shows how a lot of teams are in or have been in a rebuilding phase for the last couple of years. I was a critic of June Buchanan for the two years prior to this season. I though their schedule was ridicules and I thought they hyped the Step kid too much too soon. Not this year, he has earned the hype and his team earned the wins in the region. There's been a lot of talk about them not playing team ball, etc. and I think there is some truth to that at times. I hope they don't go to Rupp and get all selfish because of the crowd and the setting, as there will be a temptation to do so with anyone. I wish them luck and will be cheering for them and Sandy Hook!
  14. I guess getting out of the Jim Rose era was just a big relief for me! Man, now that was some tough years. Rosco Denny took Breathitt to Rupp and they got rid of him the next year? Just hard to figure.
  15. I personally thought Baker did a great job of reviving the program and making it competitive, maybe he meant Baker instead of Hoskins? I think any decent coach would have done about the same this year. I think the margin of defeat is something that stands out this year. Something went very wrong. I'm no coach by any means but the substitution rotation by Breathitt baffled me a bit. To start the 2nd half the teams were trading buckets but it was Channing Fugate doing Breathitt's scoring. After 2 min. he was on the bench and to me that's when things went from bad to worse with the margin.
  16. I guess I'll stand by what I said earlier about the refs. As for Hays being better and improved? Some kids are late bloomers, he's probably one of them and that's not a coaching thing, neither is the tournaround on the W/L stats, at least in this case. Other's have pointed out the differences in the two teams so I won't go into it. I don't think the coaches are bad coaches, so you don't need to defend them with me. I'm just saying we had good coaches and a down/rebuilding year gave the new administration a reason to put a local crony inas coach. Very similar to when they got rid of Baker, except for the down year thing. In his case it was a new administration and a couple of vindictive parents. You can be proud and realistic at the same time.
  17. Lot of season wins on a weak schedule. The worst showing by a Breathitt team in recent history. 02 lost to Whitesburg by 5 in the final 03 lost to Powell by 1 in the semi final, Powell went on to go to Rupp 04 lost by 2 to Perry Central in the final 05 lost by 5 to Perry in the semi, Perry went on to Rupp I just feel like they tend to change coaches in basketball around here way too often. Then you have to go through the "new system" stuff for a year or so, then a good year or two, then a down year, then a new coach and you start again. Looks like they would take a lesson from our football program where we have had stability for a long time. Coach Hall would have done as well if not better with this team IMO. The difference this year was the freshman class and a much improved Brandon Hays. Smith has a lot of skill but lacks tenacity. Hollon is inconsistant and pretty much a non factor most of the time. They will be a much better team next year with the experience they have now, but June Buchanan will be better also as will Perry Central and a lot of others. Referees were certainly not the difference in this game. I think that when June Buchanan swatted two or three of Breathitt's shots in the first 3 minutes it sort of set the tone. I wish them luck from here on out and would like to watch them at Rupp, but Hazard would be ok with me also!
  18. I sure agree with that. Didn't see it coming.
  19. Good game for 3 quarters but as most expected Jackson needs more depth on the bench.
  20. At the end o 3 quarters it's Breathitt 38 Jackson City 31 They're saying Buckhorn is up on Perry Central by 25 in the 3rd!
  21. You have to put Estill in the distance factor, don't you? That would put Breathitt more in the middle.
