Owensboro 48 Owensboro Catholic 20
OHS was electric on offense tonight. Kal Prince returned to form, going 6-7 and 149 yds and rushing for 100 yds on 7 carries. Aquado Douglas had 121 yds rushing on 13 carries while Dradell Johnson went for 102 yds on just 4 carries. OHS improved 100% on the offensive side of the ball. Defensivley however, OHS seemed to take a step back. The kickoff team didn't help as Catholic had two big returns to set up touchdowns. The Red Devils didn't seem to blitz as much, allowing Catholic qb Harvery to get into a rythm and hit a lot of crossing patterns. Catholic however, did improve drasticly on offense from last week against BG. Catholic RB Russell Hayden went down in the 1st quarter and didn't return, but backup Spencer Hayden filled in nicely with 80 yards on 18 carries. All in all I think both teams showed tremendous improvement from last week. Catholic is moving in the right direction. I can see the Aces being a dangerous team come playoff time. I'm not quite sure what they can do defensivly, but OCath's coaches will figure something out. Owensboro meanwhile has another week to get better, and get ready for the showdown at BG in two weeks.

Come on!! Somebody else has to have some predictions for this great weekend of football!!! Lets go guys and gals(Mrs. Purplehaze)!!!
-
Independence Bank Border Bowl (Owensboro,KY)
I can't wait for this weekend! It should be a good two nights of football. I must say that I am dissapointed in BG and WE being in. Not because they aren't good schools, but because this should be a KY-IN deal. Warren East vs Apollo- I must admit that I greatly short changed the Eagles last week when I predicted that Muhlenburg would pull the upset. I am surprised that WEast lost to Glasgow last week. The Scotties have struggled in recent years and I didn't see that coming. When I look at Apollo's roster I do see some real talent. Obviously the main one being Harris Biven, but Hunter Cannon, DJ McHenry, and Elijah Dillard are no slouches themselves. The Eagles still seem like a mystery team to me, but I'm going home team this week. Apollo 21 Warren East 14 Bowling Green vs Owensboro Catholic- The Purples are for real. There, I said it. BG shutout Christian County last week and while I don't think they'll shut out the Aces, this game will be over early. OCath's offense looks to be potent this season, but the Aces' defense has ALOT of work to do. OCath's goal is to build twords the 2A playoffs and this game will go along way to help the Aces prepare for Ft. Campbell. Bowling Green 56 Owensboro Catholic 21 Evansville Memorial vs Owensboro- This is the marquee matchup of the Border Bowl. Memorial is coming off a run to the Indiana 3A finals and loss to start the season to a VERY good Jasper team. OHS looks to take care of some unfinished buisness as the Red Devils want to get that state trophy back in the Boro. Grant Gibbons leads a very potent passing attack for the Tigers who will spread OHS out and try to pick the Devils "D" apart. OHS meanwhile will counter with speed, speed, and oh yeah more speed. This is the fastest OHS team I have ever watched. QB Kal Prince looks good behind his solid offensive line. And with many weapons(Quado Douglas,Dradell Johnson,Marcus Winstead,Ryan Bowling) look for OHS to put up some points this year. This game is speed vs sound passing. Speed wins Owensboro 42 Evansville Memorial 21 Evansville Reitz vs Daviess County- Yes this is a mismatch. DC lost every single productive member of their offense from last season. Now that Chad McCain is out that will limit DC early in the season. But DC has a couple of solid options to replace McCain. The sophomore QB really looked comfortable in the second half of the scrimmage last week vs Meade Co. DC has a solid defense returning led by Dan Wathen and Luke Wilkerson on the D line. Reitz returns several guys from last years team that lost to Jasper in the playoffs. QB Matt McIntosh, RB Alordo Bell, and Cuda Dimmett lead the Panther offense. Reitz has a stout D, holding Henderson County to minimal yards and zero points. Tough opener for DC, but they will learn from it. Evansville Reitz 49 Daviess County 14 Thats my two cents and hopefully everyone else can chime in with some predictions!!!!

Owensboro 18 Evansville Reitz 14
WOW! I am so proud of the way OHS played last night. Reitz had a HUGE size advantage up front, but the Red Devils never backed down. OHS got a huge game from playmaker Yante Williams with a 35 yard touchdown pass and a 46 yard punt return. Defensivly OHS was stout against the powerful run game of Reitz. Reitz QB Ryan McIntosh is a solid veer option QB. But I have to say I came away impressed with the play of OHS' QB Kal Prince. He handled himself well for his first start and I think we can expect to see a lot of great things from him in the future. The only negative was OHS' ground game, but Reitz probably had something to do with that. Yorel Shemwell played defensivly, picking up a fumble and scoring in the first half. Go Devils! :fire:

Independence Bank Border Bowl Predictions
Friday at Rash Stadium Daviess County vs Evansville Harrison- Much has been said about this years' Panthers being DCs' best in some time. I would have to agree. Everyone talks about Cole Lanham (and rightfully so) but the one I think you should look out for is Dylan Millay. That kid is extremly fast and could give DC the legit "homerun" threat is has been missing from the equation. Harrison meanwhile was young and in rebuilding mode last year. I just don't see the Warriors being able to match up with DC. Prediction Daviess County 42 Evansville Harrison 14 Owensboro vs. Evansville Reitz- Talk about clash of the Titans. Defending Indiana 4A champ Reitz comes marching into Rash Friday having already knocked off another Red Devils' squad in week 1 (Jeffersonville). Owensboro is looking to find itself in the new West Virginia style offense. OHS has a lot of weapons in RB Yorel Shemwell, WR Yante Williams, and KR Marcus Winstead but have tons of questions as well. Which QB will step up, and how will the defense replace all the starters from last year. I think this will be an entertaing game but with a weeks experience I'll have to give the nod to Reitz. Reitz 24 Owensboro 14 Saturday at Steele Stadium Apollo 42 Evansville Bosse 35 -The Eagles will overcome the legs of Josh Pendleton Evansville Memorial 21 Owensboro Catholic 17 -This one will be a dandy!(Jerry Birge!) But with a game under their belt against a tough Jasper team, look for Memorial to come out on top. -sorry CP! :fire:

The Phillips non fumble (a picture is worth a thousand words)
Im an Owensboro fan, so I have no dog in this fight. From what I saw in the picture, the Trinity player does not have control of the ball. His elbow is down however, so when did the ball pop out? Before or after the elbow was down? I'd say you'd just have to live with the refs' call. :fire:

Fort Campbell 21 Newport Central Catholic 7
Great job and much congrats from the Red Devil Nation! Thank you for going up to the big show and representing WKY with a championship. Here's to your title and to hoping the Red Devils can join the party in 08'! :fire:

Bowling Green 35 Owensboro 13
Just got home from the game. A few thoughts. -Hats off to the Purples tonight. When they got good field position they made OHS pay. The Purples offense is for real. They have great speed and Steelman with time can make you pay. -Game ball for DL Moore. The kid is 6'5 and will make a solid reciever for some D1 school -Thanks OHS seniors. You brought the program back to where it should be. You will never be forgotten -I hope that BG goes on to win state. Highlands has umpteen titles and they dont need any more. -Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Purplehaze. Before you guys I had nothing but bad feelings tword BG, but ya'll softened me up a little. I hope there is a way you all can make it to Papa John's to see your Purples. :fire:

Bowling Green at Owensboro
Purplehaze, it saddens me that you and your wife won't be able to make it up this Friday. I has hoping to finally meet the BG "Dynamic Duo":ylsuper: Having played some very good BG teams in the mid-90's, I have a ton of respect for the Purples program. They have tremendous athletes and play the game with toughness and at a very fast pace. Even on a "down" year for BG, you have to bring it to beat the Purples. As for the game this Friday OHS will have to find some ways to score in order for OHS to have a chance. BG has a very explosive offense, and RB Jared Carpenter and Lavance Anderson are real speedy. Not to mention WR DL Moore and TE Ryan Wallace getting good passes from the QB Steelman. Its a defenses nightmare. But fortunatly for OHS they have one of the best defenses in all of Kentucky. But the Red Devils will have to move the ball in order not to put thier defense in bad field position all night. BG will make you pay if thats the case. In the end I just dont think the Red Devils have enough offense to pull out a victory. If that is the case, then I want BG to win it all. I have no good feeling twords Highlands. They beat us in 99 and 00 for the titles and I would love to see their hearts broke as well. Go Devils! :fire:

Who wins 5A?
I love all this BG-Highlands talk.... :fire:

Meade County 21 Owensboro 7
I didn't get to attend this game, but I have to say from what I heard over the phone that the Devils flat laid an egg tonight. Im very dissapointed that OHS got beat by Meade(no disrespect), but this further confirms that OHS must get somebody who can call some better offensive plays over there. Thoughts.... -If an opposing defense has 8 in the box, use a fullback please. -OHS needs to quit the QB roll out pass. Their QB isn't mobile enough -Try the deep ball every once in a while. You only got Wayne Duncan and Yante' Williams to go deep. Isn't that enough speed. -Don't throw on 3rd and short. Please dont. -Bring back the quick slants to the possesion recievers(Cannon and Royal) -Try the quick WR screen to Wayne or Yante' -Marcus Winstead is the 3rd fastest kid in the state ya know? -Try to hit the running back out of the backfield. If the line is stacked, its all day. I really mean no disrespect by all this, but I don't believe OHS can win a state championship with the anemic offense that they have now. Hopefully the Red Devil coaches can band together and come up with a way for OHS to be more sucsessful on offense. :fire:

Owensboro at Boone Co predictions
This will be OHS' 3rd Saturday game this season!? That's got to be a first for OHS football. They key for this one is for OHS to slow down Corey Farris. They won't stop him because he is that good, but I do think they will slow him down. Boone Co. primarily runs and then runs some more. That should play into OHS' hands. OHS meanwhile will be shorthanded without standout RB Yorel Shemwell for disciplinary reasons. With Yante' Williams emerging as a big play threat for the Red Devils, look for coach Prince to try and get the ball in his hands a lot vs. Boone on Saturday. Neil Johnston and Blake Roberts should hold down the D' nicely on Saturday for OHS. OHS 17 Boone County 10 :fire:

Owensboro vs. Ohio County
Breaking down the Red Devils and the Eagles Its week 5 of the 2007 football season. I can't belive its gone by this fast! This week the Ohio County Eagles visit Rash Stadium for a 5A district 1 clash with the Owensboro Red Devils. Owensboro is coming off a 31-7 beating of city rival Daviess County, while Ohio County is fresh off a solid 41-31 win over Bullit Central. OHS is 1-0 in district play and OC is 0-1. OWENSBORO offense vs. OHIO COUNTY defense- slight advantage OWENSBORO Owensboro has been average at best on the offensive side of the ball this year. OHS' o-line was absoultly manhandled after the 1st quarter against Daviess County. This is a senior laden o-line for OHS and they have to be better than that in order for the Red Devils to seriously compete for a state title. It could have been the Devils bolted out to a 21-0 lead so quick that they had a let down. Irregardless, that performence was not acceptable. Ohio County meanwhile has given up an average of 26.5 points per game, which is not very good. I look for the Eagles to put 9 guys in the box and force OHS to pass it. If OC can keep the Red Devils in bad field position and force some turnovers then they've met their goal. OWENSBORO defense vs. OHIO COUNTY offense- advantage OWENSBORO OHS boasts one of Kentucky's best defense this year. It will be hard to for anyone to score on the Red Devils this year. Christian County did run the ball well with their speedy backs but OC lacks in that department. I think OC will need to take a few chances deep with the pass, but moving the ball will be difficult. OHS is rumoured to be without Neil Johnston this game so that will be in the Eagles' favor. OC qb Sam Kidd is 48 of 86 for 686 yards with 6 td's and 3 ints. His top reciever is Justin Frizzel. But OC will look to grin it out with Will Danks. Danks is a big running back who when moving forward is tough to bring down. Special teams- advantage OWENSBORO The Red Devils will have an advantage over most teams here, not suprisingly. With Yante Williams, Yorel Shemwell, and Josh Hayden returning kicks, OHS is very dangerous in this area. Super frosh Trey Cain is handling the kicking duties like an upperclassman. His range looks to be from 40 in, but this kid is money in the bank, and thats a big plus for OHS. For all the positives, the kickoff coverage has been very suspect for OHS. Look for OC to see that on tape and try to exploit that come Friday. Even though OHS' offense hasn't been what some would expect, I still look for the Red Devils to roll in this one. I got to see OC in a scrimmage against Owensboro Catholic, but came away thinking that the Eagles lacked tremendously in the team speed department. That is where OHS will win this one. Too much team speed from OHS, scoring on defense and special teams. OHS 42 Ohio County 7 :fire:

Owensboro 31 Daviess County 7
OHS came out on fire as Yorel Shemwell cut loose from 60 yards out to make it 7-0 Devils. Later in the first period DB Yante' Williams picked on off and returned it for 6 making it 14-0 OHS. Shemwell made it 21-0 when he scored from 6 yards out early in the second. Then before halftime OHS shanked a punt and DC got great field position on the OHS 25. A couple plays later Cole Lanham made a great pass between 3 OHS defenders and hit Scotty Smith for a 6 yard TD. In the third quarter Williams picked off another one and took it to the house making it 28-7 OHS. Super frosh kicker Trey Cain tacked on a 40 yard field goal making it 31-7 OHS for the final tally. A few thought on the game. Cole Lanham is a gamer. The kid is good. OHS just was in the backfield all night and Lanham had never seen a D that fast. OHS' offensive line was horrible after the first quarter. Time after time DC was stickin the OHS Rbs' in the backfield. That is not going to get it done against a good team. Kudos to the OHS D. They held a darn good QB in check all night. If not for the outstanding OHS D, the Red Devils would have been in trouble Friday night. DC's receivers need to help Lanham out. Several passes were dropped that would have really helped DC move the ball. To OHS' credit they were really hitting the DC recievers as the ball got there. Also, props to frosh Trey Cain. When this kid gets some leg strength, he might be a high school all american kicker by his senior year. Might sound crazy, but the kid is money in the bank as a frosh so we'll see. Good luck Panthers and lets see if OHS can fine tune that offense against Ohio County next week. Go Devils! :fire:

Owensboro Catholic vs. Apollo
In order for Ocath to win they are going to have to be able to run the football. Evan Walker isn't 100% and AHS' coaches know that. Apollo meanwhile will spread the field and try to use their explosiveness against the Aces. Sophomore Hunter Cannon will likely take most of the snaps against Ocath. But I think its the defenses that will decide the outcome in this one. Im not real sold on either, but Im' goint to give the edge to Apollo in this one because they have a few more playmakers than do the Aces. Apollo 21 OCath 14 :fire:

Daviess County vs. Owensboro
Both OHS and DC come into the game at 3-0. OHS is looking to extend its' city record to 2-0 while DC will be looking to pull the upset and possibly get into good position in the city race thereselves. Last year the Red Devils throttled the Panthers 46-6, but with the high octane offense of DC, look for this one to be closer. OWENSBORO offense vs. DAVIESS COUNTY defense- advantage OWENSBORO OHS has yet to find the explosivness that the Red Devils have come to show over the last couple years. But with Yorel Shemwell looking to come into his own behind a very experienced offensive line, look for OHS to run for a lot of yard against DC. The Panthers have had a hard time against speedy teams this year (wins over Russelville and Henderson) so don't look for that to change here. OHS will need to find a way to stay away from penalties and not beat themselves on offense. The Panthers meanwhile need to force OHS to turn it over. If so then DC will be in the hunt. DAVIESS COUNTY offense vs. OWENSBORO defense- advantage OWENSBORO DC's total offensive package rest on the shoulers of ABC 25's HOME TEAM FRIDAY MVP Cole Lanham. This QB is the real deal. He has a very nice arm and is swift of feet. A true duel threat quarterback. Also behind an ever improving line, and with reliable targets make him that much better. Rumour has is that Day Ogisi will return to the DC lineup after sitting last week with an ankle injury. Also WR's Landon Camp and Scotty Smith can give defenses nightmares. OHS meanwhile gave up their biggest point total in quite sometime (22) in a win over Christian County. Most of the Colonels yards were rushing and luckily for OHS, DC doesnt have that luxury. However DB Wayne Duncan will return for OHS after serving his one game suspension for his ejection against Owensboro Catholic two weeks ago. If DC can keep OHS off balace and not turn the ball over, then this matchup could even itself out. Special teams- advantage OWENSBORO DC kicker(name escapes me) broke his collar bone last week against Henderson. OHS super frosh Trey Cain has been on the money for the Red Devils. He really looks to be maybe the next great kicker from OHS. Also in the punt and kickoff returns OHS gets the advantage with Yante' Williams, Shemwell, and Josh Hayden. OHS' kickoff coverage hasn't been great early this year, so look for DC to try and exploit that. Daviess County is really looking to make a statement at home against OHS. The Panthers have a new identity under coach Marcus Kimbrall and want that "signature" win. OHS is still trying to find itself and although the Red Devils haven't played well still set at 3-0. I really expect the Panthers to come out jacked up, so OHS better match their intensity. I look for a tight one through out the first half, however I see OHS pulling away later in the second half to win going away. OHS 35 Daviess County 14 :fire:

Owensboro 24 Christian Co. 22
Little too close for my comfort, but I'll take a district win at Christian County anytime and anyhow I can get it. OHS was without LB Neil Johnston and DB\WR Wayne Duncan tonight so that hurt the Red Devils. OHS looks to be in control of thier own destiny, so hopefully the Red Devils can buckle down and take care of buisness from here on out. :fire:

Christian County vs. Owensboro predictions
This is definatly the biggest game for OHS this early in the season. Lose, and you could possibly be giving up home field advantage in the playoffs. Owensboro will be shorthanded with an injured Neil Johnston and a suspended Wayne Duncan. Both play offense and defense(although Neil should just be relegated to D when he comes back...too valuable there). Wayne is a true speedster and will be greatly missed as well. OHS' offensive line will need to step it up big in this game. The Red Devils are going to have to find a way to start being more efficient on the offensive side of the ball. One way is to stop turning the ball over in the "red zone". I look for OHS' D to keep Christian Co. at bay, but OHS' "O" is gonna have to come up for the Red Devils to get a key district win on the road. OHS 24 Christian County 7 :fire:

Owensboro vs. Owensboro Catholic
The Owensboro Catholic Aces return to Rash Stadium for the first time since 2005, and their move to Steele Stadium. Both OCath and OHS are long time rivals and this is one of the best and most heated rivalries in Western Kentucky. Catholic is coming off a 40-6 setback to Reitz, while OHS is coming off a 22-3 victory over Memorial. Both games were in the inagural Independence Bank Border Bowl. Can Catholic return to Rash victorious, or will OHS defend thier home turf and get a game up in the city-county race? OWENSBORO offense vs. CATHOLIC defense: Slight advantage Owensboro Catholic returns the bulk of a defense from a year ago that improved drastically from the beggining of the 06 season till' the end. The Aces are lead by all-state performer Brian Winkelpeck, and large defensive line. OHS meanwhile returns most of thier 0-line, however injuries have depleted the Red Devils in that area. The key to this matchup will hinge on the Aces ability to negate OHS' big play ability. I have attended both Catholics' scrimmage games and the opener. From what I have seen thAces attack very well on defense, but sometimes too well. OCath seems to over commit to a play and if they miss a tackle, nothing is there. OHS will look to counter with senior playcaller Austin Moss, RB's Neil Johnston and Yorell Shemwell. OHS has speed a plenty at wide out with Josh Hayden, Yante' Williams, and Wayne Duncan. Thats a heck of a 4x100 relay right there! But as they've shown, OHS is wildly inconsistant on offense, but thier big play ability give them a slight advantage. CATHOLIC offense vs. OWENSBORO defense: Advantage Owensboro Trying to score on OHS was very much a chore on 06', and while Memorial moved to ball against OHS at times the Tigers found that getting into the end zone was rather difficult. Catholic will counter with John Powers at qb and a very good offensive line. The Aces 0-line gave Powers tons of time to find recievers before wearing down in the second half against Reitz. WR Bryan McGraw is a very capable big play reciever and is really a carbon copy of his brother(former Aces stand out Kevin McGraw). Evan Walker is a very good athlete, so wherever they line him up he will contribute. OCath will have to find a running game however, and with the hogmales up front(Kevin Bunton,Logan Bell and others) they should be able to run at times. OHS answers with two of the best linebackers in the state in Neil Johnston and Blake Roberts. Khiry Maddox, and Ben Goetz round out the linebacker corps. Jermaine Dumas, Paul Sowders, and Tre' Duhngegy fill in the d-line. OHS is very solid in the secondary with Wayne Duncan, Josh Hayden, Yorel Shemwell, and Josh Royal. OHS rotates several players in and out to keep guys fresh on D. Special teams: Advantage Owensboro This all goes back to speed. I don't look for Catholic to kick the ball to OHS. Special teams is 1\3 of the game, so don't look for the Aces to give that part away. Hayden, Shemwell, Williams and others can all take it to the house with any touch. Both kickers for OHS and Catholic are unknown so we'll see how that pans out. Keys to the game Catholic will need to control the tempo of the game wich means the Aces much find a way to run the ball against OHS. OHS will look to force turnovers on D and Catholic should look to do the same. If the Aces can hang around till the fourth quarter then anything is possible in this high anticipated city-county matchup. Prediction: OWENSBORO 35, CATHOLIC 7 I look for OHS to come out sharp and never let the high octane Aces offense get going. :fire:

Bowling Green/Owensboro Catholic Scrimmage
PurpleHaze, I was wondering if you were at the scrimmage. I knew I should have walked over to the other side. BG came out sharp, and I think their overall athletism overwhelmed the Aces at first. BG jumped out 21-0, the OC settled down and drove the ball 80 yards for thier first score. But as the scrimmage wore on, I thought that BG looked like the were getting a little tired and frustrated. OC runs a no huddle and that can wear on you thoughout a game. I noticed the BG players gasping for air a lot. But the overall team speed of BG is very impressive. The tall reciever and TE Ryan Wallace look very D1 recruitable. I thought BG should have looked to the tall reciever more because he was at least 6 inches taller than his defender. OC meanwhile showed me a lot of heart. Thier execution isnt what it normally is but they showed flashed of that potent Aces offense. I think the defense is stingy, but will always struggle against teams with good speed. I just always find it amazing how OC seems to run thier offense as well as they do. I saw a couple plays that OC made(like the kickoff return) were if they were playing a district foe instead of BG it might have gone for 6. I look for Catholic to take thier early season lumps but when the Aces get into disrict play then look out. :fire:
