Breaking down the Red Devils and the Eagles

 

Its week 5 of the 2007 football season. I can't belive its gone by this fast! This week the Ohio County Eagles visit Rash Stadium for a 5A district 1 clash with the Owensboro Red Devils. Owensboro is coming off a 31-7 beating of city rival Daviess County, while Ohio County is fresh off a solid 41-31 win over Bullit Central. OHS is 1-0 in district play and OC is 0-1.

 

OWENSBORO offense vs. OHIO COUNTY defense- slight advantage OWENSBORO

Owensboro has been average at best on the offensive side of the ball this year. OHS' o-line was absoultly manhandled after the 1st quarter against Daviess County. This is a senior laden o-line for OHS and they have to be better than that in order for the Red Devils to seriously compete for a state title. It could have been the Devils bolted out to a 21-0 lead so quick that they had a let down. Irregardless, that performence was not acceptable. Ohio County meanwhile has given up an average of 26.5 points per game, which is not very good. I look for the Eagles to put 9 guys in the box and force OHS to pass it. If OC can keep the Red Devils in bad field position and force some turnovers then they've met their goal.

 

OWENSBORO defense vs. OHIO COUNTY offense- advantage OWENSBORO

OHS boasts one of Kentucky's best defense this year. It will be hard to for anyone to score on the Red Devils this year. Christian County did run the ball well with their speedy backs but OC lacks in that department. I think OC will need to take a few chances deep with the pass, but moving the ball will be difficult. OHS is rumoured to be without Neil Johnston this game so that will be in the Eagles' favor. OC qb Sam Kidd is 48 of 86 for 686 yards with 6 td's and 3 ints. His top reciever is Justin Frizzel. But OC will look to grin it out with Will Danks. Danks is a big running back who when moving forward is tough to bring down.

 

Special teams- advantage OWENSBORO

The Red Devils will have an advantage over most teams here, not suprisingly. With Yante Williams, Yorel Shemwell, and Josh Hayden returning kicks, OHS is very dangerous in this area. Super frosh Trey Cain is handling the kicking duties like an upperclassman. His range looks to be from 40 in, but this kid is money in the bank, and thats a big plus for OHS. For all the positives, the kickoff coverage has been very suspect for OHS. Look for OC to see that on tape and try to exploit that come Friday.

 

Even though OHS' offense hasn't been what some would expect, I still look for the Red Devils to roll in this one. I got to see OC in a scrimmage against Owensboro Catholic, but came away thinking that the Eagles lacked tremendously in the team speed department. That is where OHS will win this one. Too much team speed from OHS, scoring on defense and special teams.

I look for the Red Devils to make early work of the Eagles and get some guys a little rest and let some other guys get some experience. The score may not show how this game really was when it is all said and done. Hopefully the Devils wil not lok past this game as they travel to Boone Co. next week very big test. I will say
