A few years ago I posted a full prediction on BGP in the build-up to the official announcement of a new alignment and the KHSAA commissioner actually tweeted that "no alignments are official, despite what you read online."

My prediction is Adair County, Elizabethtown, Hart County, and Larue County.

It’s a 5-team district now, with KCD playing Portland Christian in a play-in game. But of course Ballard will be a huge favorite against either team.

Would be nice if the good folks at Danville would go ahead and post the official district brackets. It's the job of the host school and the 45th is the only bracket in the region not posted.

I'd say Betsy Layne would fit best in my proposed D7; they played in that district a couple of years ago. I put Betsy Layne in D8, essentially hedging against whether Phelps would compete.

When everyone in Class 1A makes the playoffs automatically, district size really doesn't matter. Class 1A schools are small and often low-budgeted; having a southeastern Kentucky team travel north of Lexington twice when four of their closest rivals in every sport are in a different district isn't something the KHSAA has typically done. Of course this is all speculation - we shall see!

I don't believe it was discussed this time but it really didn't have to be. That can be implemented pretty easily at any time. I suspect it may come up at the May meeting.

I'm predicting a few 5-team and 3-team districts in Class 1A: D1 - Ballard Memorial, Crittenden Co, Fulton Co, Russellville D2 - Caverna, Fort Knox, Lou Holy Cross, WEB DuBois D3 - Eminence, Frankfort, Trimble Co D4 - Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Newport, Newport Catholic D5 - Berea, Nicholas Co, Paris D6 - Harlan, Lynn Camp, Middlesboro, Pineville, Williamsburg D7 - Fairview, Paintsville, Raceland D8 - Betsy Layne, East Ridge, Hazard, Phelps, Pikeville What will be interesting is if the non-district teams will be removed before the alignment is produced. For instance, if Phelps chooses to stay independent, does the smallest 2A go down to 1A to make an even 32?

Based on the numbers posted last night, I suspect Bracken County will be in Class 2A. Obviously they could stay with Beechwood, Gallatin, Owen, etc. I did a little back-of-the-napkin figuring last night and could also see them in a grouping with Lewis County, Morgan County, West Carter, maybe Sayre. Class 2A will have a lot of eastern Kentucky representation so it will be interesting to see how it is configured.

Well deserved. Scored over 3,000 points for his career and has willed a Wayne County team that probably shouldn't be this good based on all their injuries and adversity into one of the top teams in the region.

Agreed, it doesn't make sense. While a handful of girls play football every year, there's no real reason to make total enrollment how you divide the schools. That said, I would imagine in a situation like this that single-sex schools would see their enrollment numbers doubled for classification.

On the Board of Control agenda it mentions "Consider Use of Total Enrollment Population for all Classified Sports." It's possible that is the delay. Using those numbers would have a minimal effect on most schools but the impact would be larger at some of the JCPS schools that are magnets for specific subjects. Central High is probably the best example; their enrollment numbers are often about 60/40 girl. It feels like it has never quite clicked with Adair this year. I still think they are capable of winning the region but have to think at this point they've not quite reached expectations.

How many of these left one JCPS job for another? McKay and May for sure. Was Oldham somewhere last year?

This is an issue that the KHSAA needs to resolve soon. The current basketball (and almost all sports) alignment is based on the initial product from 1933, adjusted in 1966, and again in 2005. The problem is the number of schools in some parts of the state has grown while other areas have shrunk. The KHSAA continues to attempt to band-aid this problem but I believe it is past time to do a complete overhaul. No region should have fewer than 16 teams and no district should have fewer than 4 teams. If that means some schools have to move out of their traditional homes, then so be it.
