  1. - No previous titles. - The school is in Paintsville. - They're -finally- becoming the program they should have been over the past 20+ years. The school has incredible facilities and is not bashful with $$. - Central was a borderline 3A-4A school before the new system.
  2. Actually, that's exactly what you did. You replied, "Talk about underestimating your opponent--there's a perfect example!" when MonsterMan stated "will not be intimidated by all this talk about who you have played and how many titles you have won"...
  3. Matney's team won't be intimidated, but they will be whipped into an inferiority-complex based frenzy. Coach is good with the mind game stuff.
  4. Not really... Coach Matney is the KING of selling the "nobody out there thinks you even belong on this field with the other team" stuff to his players. He's done it for many years. The fact that it's Highlands coming in just makes his psych job a LOT easier than usual.
  5. Round 4 is the Semi-State. I'm fairly certain it's the even numbered region (not district) that gets homefield.
  6. Most discount Prestonsburg for the thrashing Beechwood gave them. And the perception of the Blackcats was not helped by the poor performances at the end of the season against Shelby Valley and Perry Central. Whether you believe it or not, Corbin is undoubtedly the favorite in this game. And they should be. The Redhounds have been incredibly consistant this year. Frankly, I'm surprised the poll is as close as it is...
  7. I think it was dumb luck they were even scheduled. Last year, Prestonsburg needed to fill a spot on the schedule late in the season and it just so happened the Commodores needed to do the same. And...the drive to Hazard is only an hour away. I'll tell you something. PCC's coach is really making a big difference in that program. If his players continue buying into what he says, don't look for them to be "very average" much longer. Last season, Prestonsburg was caught looking past what the players thought would be an easy win. P-burg just blew it while PCC came with it. This year, the game was played in a quagmire. PCC's QB (forgot the name) was an absolute nightmare to catch when he broke into open field with the ball. He was small enough (couldn't have been bigger than 5'7" and 150 lbs) to run at speed and change direction without slipping. He was the only one on the field that could do so. He singlehandedly made our defense look terrible.
  8. Can't really disagree with anything you're saying. But, to be fair, the long Adams run came on a draw (excellent playcall, btw). That's not really the same as a pitch, sweep, or dive (a "standard" running game) . It looks to me Middlesboro's defense puts everything into brickwalling a power running game. The TE fade P-burg ran out of the flexbone went uncovered all night as Coach Roark never did drop a safety or at least pull the corners back a little. The Blackcats could have run the play all night if P-burg wasn't looking to eat clock. If memory serves, expectations weren't very high for the Jackets before the season. It's safe to say Middlesboro's season easily passed those expectations. Good luck to you all !!!
  9. It's understandable how some are confusing Prestonsburg for a District 8 team. After all, they used to be just that. When Belfry, Sheldon Clark, and Breathitt Co. were 2A sized, Prestonsburg was in District 8 with the Pirates and Cardinals. The Bobcats were in District 7. That was all in the timeframe Corbin was stuck in the western semi-state of 2A. That's how two mountain teams (Corbin and Breathitt Co.) made the Title game back in '02.
  10. I don't know why I had Grayson Co. (that's where Caneyville is) in my head when you mentioned Carroll Co.. :creepy: I twisted what you posted earlier in my head and so my reply was pretty darn meaningless. My apologies...
  11. Very little doubt Corbin should be considered the favorite, as a traditionally strong undefeated team, playing at home, should be. There were three big reasons. 1) Beechwood is very good, 2) the Blackcats did a poor job of holding onto the football (TO's and dropped passes), and 3) Prestonsburg came in with a pass-first game plan (NOT P-burg's preferred playing style). LOL... Some in Prestonsburg were starting to think the same. But the Middlesboro game showed maybe they're catching a 2nd wind. Prestonsburg's win was by more than the score indicates - the only time Middlesboro made the red zone was on their lone scoring drive in the 4th qtr.. Undoubtedly... Isn't that always the case with the mountain traditional powers ?? I'll give you this...Prestonsburg has a well-balanced offensive attack. The Blackcats are very competent running inside and outside, and passing deep and underneath. :bunny:
  12. I don't think Carroll Co. counts as a "Louisville team". I've been to Caneyville and it's just as rural in nature as Louisa. :sssh:
  13. While I agree it looks bad, oftentimes that's EXACTLY when you see a flag come. Why ? Because many officials hesitate to call holding when the foul doesn't adversely affect the defensive team. Obviously, if HC broke the run for a TD, the defense would have been hurt badly by a non-call. While seeing the offense make a big gain was what prompted the flag, if officials called every hold, games would take 4 hours. Since you haven't denied a hold occurred, I assume the call was correct.
  14. I'm not sure Breathitt Co. is strong enough to stop Estill Co.'s double wing. And, I don't believe Estill Co. is athletic enough to control both Fugate and the newly found Bobcat passing attack. Estill Co. MUST come out strong and play with a lead. Their offense is ill-suited to come from behind. If the Engineers don't turn the ball over and come out strong, they win. OTOH, if Breathitt Co. gets a few stops and scores early, the Bobcats win by a big margin.
  15. Dominant win. Roll on, Pirates !!! :thumb:
  16. Wow...wish I'd thought of these words a couple of years ago to write in the P-burg/Bath Co. game thread when all the Bath supporters complained about the officials "letting the game get out of hand". Interesting to see one of them on the other side of that now. :bunny:
  17. You better hope you don't hear a lot of cannon shots, because Central has one (I think)...
  18. My nomination for "Lowest Class Comment of the Night" .... There's no excuse for this kind of sarcasm when a boy's life was in danger. A ruptured spleen is a serious deal.
  19. Hard to imagine the Engineers double-wing putting up points like that. But...if the other team don't stop it...TD every time. Estill Co.'s offense should get a rating as a "top defense". Estill/Breathitt should be a great game !!!
  20. Go RAMS !!! Go PIRATES !!! Go GOLDEN EAGLES !!! Go BLACKCATS !!! We all have PLENTY to cheer for... don't you just LOVE this time of year ?!? :ylsuper: :thumb: :ylsuper:
  21. Not surprised Bath Co. made a game of this one. They're a scrappy bunch that play very hard. Look for them to keep improving and be a real tough out over the next couple years. The Blackcats will be coming to call next Friday... ought to be a GREAT game !!
  22. Wow... I thought Coach D. was a gambler until I saw Coach Roark go for it on 4th and 1 on his own 37 and on the first set of downs !! I'd thought they were just trying to draw P-burg offsides until he snapped the ball. Very surprising... The Blackcats were pretty darned impressive tonight in the way they went for Middlesboro's throat. P-burg was up 20-0 at the half without a single Jacket scoring threat. In the 2nd half Prestonsburg was happy to trade possessions and milk the clock, keeping the ball almost exclusively on the ground. Middlesboro did put together a nice drive from midfield using short/medium range passing to spoil the shutout with about 5 mins. left in the game. Hunter Adams is a very impressive looking athlete. His name was called all night on both sides of the ball for the Jackets. He broke one run of about 30 yards, but was otherwise held in check. However o-line is correct, it appeared the Jackets went mostly with the passing game after they fell behind by 14 so his touches at RB weren't his usual, I'm sure. Prestonsburg executed the passing game very well tonight. Middlesboro stacked the box every time P-burg lined up in the flexbone. Burchett burned them a number of times playfaking the jet sweep and throwing a TE fade to the opposite side. On to Corbin next Friday... :thumb:
  23. Setser only played on the offensive side, but even then was used sparingly. The coaching staff did a really good job protecting him, yet still gave him the opportunity to make a good contribution as a blocking back and decoy with a very few carries. Hopefully he'll be in better shape next week.
