If the Russell coach feels it will be better for his program not playing Raceland, then that is what he should do.

I'd assume, but don't definitively know, that the theory is that if making tackles becomes a point of emphasis, defenders will not do their assignments, rather they will be more interested in making tackles. When that happens, a defense breaks down. For defensive success, as a unit, each player must fulfill his assignment every play. Often performing that assignment puts a defender in a position where he could not make the tackle on that play. Kid does exactly what he is supposed to, but isn't in a position to make a tackle. I know of instances where Highlands players got chewed out for actually making tackles because they weren't doing their assignments but rather were freelancing. Offensively, only the guy getting his number called can score. So you won't have, for example, a WR failing to do his assignment so he can get the ball on that play and score or catch the pass. It doesn't work that way. Yeah, I guess a WR could not do his assignment of blocking with the hope that the RB won't score that play and perhaps the next play will be a pass thrown his way so he can score, but there is no guarantee that a pass his way will be called the next play. In other words, an offensive player could blow off his assignment every play in order to seek individual success, but it can't happen if his number isn't called that play. Whereas, a defender could blow off his assignment every play to seek individual success and it could work sometimes but in doing so make the defense more vulnerable on future plays. Does the above make sense? I'm having a hard time explaining what I'm thinking (brain dead this afternoon I guess), so maybe not. Furthermore, there is a lot more objectivity in offensive stats. Yards gained, tds scored, passes caught are what they are. A tackle? Unfortunately, a tackle is often in the eye of the beholder. Won't name the kid or the school, but a few years back an opponent was credited with making a bunch of tackles against Highlands. I went back and watched play by play on tape. There was no way the kid made that many tackles unless flopping on the pile as the RB was pretty much on the ground is considered a tackle. JUst very subjective stuff.

I'm with you up to the post season play part. That sanction unfairly impacts kids on the team that did nothing wrong. Go after the coaches big time that cheat; go after the administrators for failing to properly supervise. Just don't punish the kids that did nothing wrong.

Actually, a high school coach that recruits a middle school kid that is not within the high school's feeder system is violating the KHSAA rules. If Mueller showed up at a Red Devil game and recruited a kid attending a Campbell County elementary school, he would be violating the KHSAA recruiting rule. I have long advocated to the KHSAA that any coach found to have violated the recruiting rule should be banned for life from coaching in Kentucky. No exceptions. They are adults and know better.

BF or anyone familiar with Western: is the football field at the school, or is this one of those situations where the field is located somewhere else?

mex, do you have any feel for what the future holds for NCC football? I realize no one can predict the future, but if I recall properly from what I've read on here and heard around town, the numbers for NCC football have been down recently. Is my recollection correct? If so, do you have feel for what is causing such? The economy; other reasons? I've also heard that if Lickert continues to build success at CC, it would hurt NCC as some of the "county Catholics" that weren't already going to go to Brossart would start choosing CC over NCC. Any thoughts on that? If CC pulled just a couple of good football players away from NCC per year, I could see it having a magnified impact on NCC because of its small size. If it does work out that way, it will be some confirmation of what I've said about the public private issue in the state: that being, the best way to stop the private schools (as well as schools like Highlands) from attracting out of district students from other schools is for the other schools to improve their game so that kids won't want to leave. If the public schools in Louisville and Lex were/had been making the commitment that Trinity, X and LexCath are/have been making to football, those three schools would not be near as dominant as they have been. Sounds like a couple of public schools in Lou have ratcheted it up. Don't feel the same about the public schools in Lex, but maybe I'm mistaking. All I hear about Lex is that it's become a soccer town on the high school level. If you'd rather PM your thoughts, I understand.

Scheduling Highlands for the first game is a great move by Lickert. Great motivator for the upcoming off season. If what I hear about Campbell County is accurate, I wouldn't be counting on a Highlands win as a certainty. Campbell County will be really good next year.

Cold Hard has correctly responded to many points raised so I won't bother addressing those, other to say that as a state administrative agency, the KHSAA's final decisions are subject to court intervention. As to a clear way, or a hard and fast rule if I may, I don't think that is very feasible or fair. Each transfer is pretty much unique, which each one have it's own set of facts and circumstances. A hard and fast rule allowing everyone to transfer with no repercussions would create it's own problems (although I admit, I'm in favor of allowing every kid one transfer with no questions asked unless illegal recruiting by a coach or school is proven). Allowing no players that transfer to have eligibility with no exceptions would likewise create problems. The current rule is a middle of the road compromise that generally works. Is it perfect? No it is not. No rule will ever be perfect for all circumstances. Cold Hard, before a person can ask the courts to intervene, he/she must first exhaust his/her administrative remedies. In other words, before a court can intervene in an eligibility case, the KHSAA eligibility process must be finally completed. So I believe that if you did not appeal to the KHSAA, you would have waived your right to appeal the KHSAA's final decision to the courts. Not giving legal advise; just my understanding of the way things work.

Great post RP on what sounds like was a great game. I'm mad at myself for thinking about this game. Highlands had a bye and I could have taken in this game. The Polar Bears are my second favorite team. Oh well, I did spend some quality time with Henry, my Mom and a brother. Congrats to both teams for a hard fought game and particularly to the Polar Bears for the win. Well done.

When defenders don't have to worry about the pass, they are coming down hill at the snap of the ball, which really helps them deliver a blow. Did Ryle attempt a pass in the first half other than the halfback pass? Play calling really made it tough on Ryle's O line.

Was very surprised by Colerain's O. Not what I was used to seeing or expecting. Don't know how much of that was for X's "benefit". Won't surprise me if Colerain doesn't attempt 5 passes against X next weekend. Congrats to both teams for a hard played game.

Don't know. I haven't seen LaSalle play this year so I have no idea who will be the favorite. All I know is what I've been told/read about LaSalle and CovCath. LaSalle is supposedly way down from last year and CovCath is supposedly better than last year. Whether that movement is enough to make CovCath the favorite, I don't know.

Bingo. Unlike X, Moeller, Colerain, Elder, etc., LaSalle doesn't just re-load; they have to re-build. Looks like Grippa has a talented frosh class and is going to ride it and endure the bumpy ride this year, in order to have a very, very good team in several years.

They got beat by Lakota West this past week. If you believe what is said on Yappi and what my Buckeye buddies tell me, that should never happen. Lakota West is not considered as a powerhouse Cincinnati program. La Salle is starting 2 or 3 freshman on the varsity team; one of which may be the QB. The frosh QB played in the Lakota West game and actually had a pretty good night. Still, starting that many frosh is not a good sign for a GCL South team. Defense played very poorly against Lakota West I was told. One friend who is pretty close to the LaSalle program is predicting a very, very long season. He's hoping that by the end of the year, as the frosh and other young players get experience, the team may end up not being too bad. But he's expecting rough times before then.

Bingo! Because Pendleton County will not compete for a state championship in football, they will not be in a district and accordingly will not be forced to play any district opponents. They are still in the KHSAA and the decision concerning football will not affect any other sports at Pendleton County as it relates to the KHSAA or competing for state championships.

The problem Friday night was caused by the Jumbotron wiring from what I was told, which makes sense since the Jumbotron isn't used for Freshman games on Thursday, is it? While the PA guy for Friday nights undeniably makes mistakes, he didn't cause the problem Friday night. Neither was the PA system itself the problem. It was replaced in 09 as was mentioned previously. It's a good system and wasn't cheap. I'm not an electronics guru so I can't explain exactly what happened. Somehow the wiring of the Jumbotron interfaces with the wiring in the press box that runs the PA system. I know that they had people scrambling over to the Jumbotron electronics box during the game to try to fix the problem. Evidently that didn't work from what I've read on here. I too stand in a position that doesn't allow me to hear the PA system even when it's working perfectly. I didn't even know there was a problem until someone brought it up on here. I do certainly agree with you about Jac. He sounds almost exactly like Cris.

Kind of silly, isn't it. The silliest of all is someone telling Henry she needs to pony up. There are very, very, very few folks who have ponied up more for Highlands football than Henry and her family. And most of those folks complaining haven't contributed a nickle, other than buying a game ticket, to the football program. Oh the funny irony of it all. Personally I could care less about the PA system. I didn't need to hear my sons' names be called when they made a big play. I was happy for them as it was. That was enough for me. But to each their own I guess. Birds played well. We seemed much more aggressive on defense. That might have had some to do with the type of O SC ran. We did tackle better. No doubt we still have a lot of work to do before we play CovCath. Offensively, we ran the ball well. We've got to get better passing the ball and become better balanced. All in all, I was pleased with what I saw Friday night. The bye this week will allow the coaches a lot of time to work with the kids on what the coaches have seen the last 3 weeks. We have to use the next two games to fine tune our execution so that when we play CovCath, things are working smoothly. Looking forward to the trip to Western and then hosting Mason Co. Lots of respect for David Buchanon and his Mason County Royals.
