Newport Central Catholic 3 Beechwood 2 (25-27, 26-24, 25-10, 23-25, 15-12)
Didn't want to interrupt the announcer from his duties. Most important job in the gym.

I got all that, plus .50 cent popcorn! Win-Win!

Tates Creek 3 Newport Central Catholic 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22)
Tates Creek is no slouch and I have to think that if NCC can have that kind of game against Beechwood at home, they will win.

Predictions: Beechwood at NCC Thursday 8/27
OK you sold me, I'll go. Honestly, curious to see what Beechwood is doing so well that they are undefeated. I thought Beechwood would be a rivalry game for NCC, considering Beechwood knocked NCC out of the All-A last year, and there seems to be some football history between the 2 schools. Too bad more students won't go and support.

In girls volleyball, the one thing for sure is, nothing is for sure.

Predictions: Beechwood at NCC Thursday 8/27
Beechwood travels to NCC. Will NCC students pack the gym and make some noise? Will Beechwood ever lose again? Will NCC's gym have air conditioning? And most importantly, what are the specials at the concession stand?

Beechwood 3 Cooper 2
Again, it's all about expectations. Where is the bar set for Cooper Volleyball? I've think there are 4 kinds of programs: Win - and fun! Win, but no fun. Lose, but have fun Lose, and no fun Cooper seems to be losing and not having any fun playing. I've seen volleyball teams lose a ton, but they tried their best, have fun playing, and keep trying. Not getting that vibe out of Cooper right now.

Beechwood 3 Cooper 2
Cooper looks very uninspired. It's early, but Thursday vs St. Henry is kind of make or break for Cooper's season - not from a win/loss standpoint, but from a "has the coach lost the team" standpoint.

Notre Dame Academy 3 Mt. Notre Dame (OH) 0
25-19, 25-18, 25-16 according to live scoring on NDA Volleyball website. Pandas defeat defending Ohio State champ and #16 ranked team in the country.

Notre Dame vs Sacred Heart - Thursday August 27th
I think Mt. Notre Dame on Tuesday is a tougher challenge for Pandas. If Pandas can play well on Tuesday it may give them momentum for Thursday. I think it's all about playing clean and cutting errors. Newspaper said Mercy had over 40 errors against SHA. That's giving away the game. With a very tough schedule, ND will lose matches this year - just like Assumption and Mercy already have losses this year. That's what happens when you play at a high level against the nation's best.

8/25 Ryle at Scott Predictions
Ryle wins 3-0. Team W-L records mean nothing, Scott's schedule is way easier in the 10th.

Silver Grove cancels volleyball season
According to Twitter, Silver Grove has cancelled volleyball for 2015, citing lack of players and a coaching departure. I feel bad for the students forced to attend this outdated independent school system because civic leaders with stubborn pride refuse to shut it down. There's nothing romantic or nostalgic about attending a school that is ranked at the bottom in state test scores, has no academic resources, and frankly isn't preparing anyone for the future. When the last train left Silver Grove years ago, it took the town with it. Time to shut it down and move on. You can get that close knit community feeling in plenty of other schools that are thriving, both in the classroom and athletics.

9th Region KVCA Coaches Poll
Hey I'm fine- leave it the way it is. Just know that a small school, or a public school, or a school outside of Louisville/NKY is never going to win it. Why do I say this? Because it's been 35 years, and it hasn't happened yet, and I don't see the gap getting smaller. Heck only 1 time in 35 years has a public school ever made it to the Championship, and that was because of the luck of the draw, and it was just a few years ago. I also say this because in volleyball, you have to be 7 to 8 players deep to win. It's not like basketball, where you can have 2 superstar players and tell the other 3 to go rebound and play defense. There's no "hiding" volleyball players on the court. Your weakest player will cost you games. Yes, public schools like Ryle and Henry Clay are getting better. But for anyone to win State, you have to be better than Assumption, Mercy, Sacred Heart, St. Henry, and Notre Dame. 5 legacy volleyball powers. And you have to be better than all 5 of them on any given year to win State. It's just not going to happen.

9th Region KVCA Coaches Poll
The reality is only teams from the power regions have a shot at a title. That's a function of not having classes, and having private and public schools together, not the set-up of the State tournament. But there are schools like Ryle, Henry Clay, and a few in Louisville that if they were included in the State tournament would have a legit shot at winning it or at least upsetting one of the "big 4". The tourney would need to expand - 16 Region winners plus 6 at-large. OR, redraw the Regions for Volleyball to only have 8 Regions - with top 2 in each Region going to State. It comes down to what you believe the State Tourney should have - the best teams, or a geographical representation of the State. So far, it's been the latter.

Notre Dame 3 Cooper 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-12)
This has been said many times...there's nothing stopping public school kids from starting to play club volleyball in 3rd grade, or even 2nd grade. And the "Catholic Schools start in 3rd grade" excuse is getting old....people, have you ever seen these 3rd & 4th grade private school leagues? Short season, equal playing time, usually coached by someone in college who used to play or a parent that used to play. Not exactly the training ground of future Gatorade All-Americans. Club is where the real coaching and training is at, and club is available to anyone year 'round.

Notre Dame 3 Cooper 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-12)
Yup. Assumption and Sacred Heart are 2 of the top 20 teams in the nation, but only 1 will go to state. Stupid. and only 1 team between Ryle, St. Henry, ND will go. Meanwhile, rural Regions of the state are sending whoever. Watch the early rounds of the state tournament matches online - the level of play is terrible.
-
Notre Dame 3 Cooper 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-12)
True. Guess I should have specified most lopsided girl's sport...or most lopsided "team" sport, ie a team playing together, not a team score derived from an aggregate of finishes in individual events.

Cooper 37 Highlands 13
Highlands has a very high bar. By Highlands standards, how is this team "great"? and what is the threshold for "fine" by the Highlands faithful? State Champs? Runner-up? 2 losses? 5 losses?

9th Region KVCA Coaches Poll
I posted this in the other thread, but it also seems appropriate here Volleyball is by far the most lopsided sport in the state and in need of the biggest reform. It's dominated by 5 schools, all private, 3 from Louisville and 2 from NKY. No public school has ever won the Championship, and no school outside of Louisville/NKY has ever won won either. All the best teams and players are stacked into 3 Regions - the 5th place team in Region 9 could beat the Region winner from at least 10 other Regions with ease. The KHSAA thinks every sport can be set up the same way as basketball. Well, it's just not working for volleyball. Redraw the Regions, go to classes based on size, or public/private, or both. Expand the State tourney to 16 Region winners plus 6 at-large bids, so that talented teams from the really deep Regions get their shot at State. Do something.

ND website says they play 3 of the top 20 teams in the country next week. Region 9 aside, it will tell if ND is for real or not on a state/national level. I also don't remember any team in any sport from NKY ever facing 3 top 20 nationally ranked teams in 1 week.

Providence (IN) beats Mercy
Mercy is ranked #50 and Providence is #49 , so technically, this is not an upset.
