I thought Slone played very solid this weekend, he is playing on a team of good players, so it is harder to stand out sometimes, but his defense is very solid, he showed a lot of explosiveness to the basket, and his ball handling was solid and his rebounding, He is a hard nosed kid that always gives great effort. He is going to get some d-1 offers

Portwood, (along with Jordan Smart at Catholic) are the two best "zone busters" in the state! Portwood averaged 1.04 points per shot last year, Mackey averaged 1.03 points per shot last year. The reason you heard so much about Mackey (and Walls) is that they controlled the basketball. Didnt leave that many extra shots on the table. In the meantime, Tyler has developed his defense and his ball handling. You will see him playing at the next level (which not many Kentucky kids can say)

Ds East is in the semifinals against the shining stars after beating Team Kentucky, Northern Kentucky Royals to win the pool and the DS West team in the quarterfinals. Competition sunday should be pretty good, finals at 1pm at KBA if anyone is interested in attending. Also interesting to see Elliot County beat a much bigger DS east 16u team in the quarterfinals tonight. Got to hand it to the Elliot county team, they will be the only school team still playing Sunday:thumb:

Hicks is a Jekyll and Hyde. I have seen him act extremely nice and then act as far as you can get on the other side of the spectrum. But as recently as this years Russell game, he refused to shake hands with the Russell team after a tough loss and then was arguing with his own fan base after the game. I don't think those are "signs of improvement" and did not represent the Greenup County program in a favorable manner I think Hick's has a passion for the game and loves what he does, but he has no one to blame for his current predicament other than himself

I hear there might be some "surprises" on the team Thursday may be interesting

Haddix is a competitor, he is a difference maker and I'm not sure that there are more than about two kids in the state who can keep up with him

I understand Rodney Haddix has been invited to try out. He would be a great selection and add a great deal to the team. He is probally a top 3 player in the state although he is just coming off a foot injury

Interesting that 5 of the players from the first team come from the Derek Smith Program, including Mr Basketball Pettigrew, along with Proffit, Van Hoose, Beckham and Brooks I agree Austin Hill was "underrated"

People don't realize how hard it is sometimes to juggle all that talent and keep everyone on the same page, give credit to Coach Hicks for playing the toughest schedule in the state and coming out on top:thumb:

Hard to believe the #1 team in the Region only had one player on the all region team, if thats accurate, you have to give Dodd Coach of the year then

Is it one vote per school? Coaches vote? If so, that could be an interesting contrast to the kabc vote and probally change some things

ELLIOT County was flat out the better team tonight, especially after the first quarter . Shelby Valley fouled at lot at the end to throw the fouls out of whack, The ref's did not decide this game, Elliot County did, and Ferguson had a big second half. Elliot was just more athletic than Shelby Valley and in better shape The Lions will have their hands full with Warren Central

I just noticed Kansas has a 24 year old junior named Kaun playing today, and I don't see Meeks, Jasper, or any other 19-20 year old Kentucky player whining about it I doubt if Kaun gets player of the game :sleep:

For all the people calling and asking, here it is Jon had surgery this morning at Cabell in Huntington. Dr. Giagarra did the surgery and said everything was normal. Surgery was only an hour and 45 minutes and he is saying Jon will be 100% in 6 months and should be good to go for Evansville when they start practice in October. I would like to thank all the coaches,fans, players who have remembered Jon in their thoughts and prayers. Pretty humbling when guys like Coach Humphries and Coach Flynn who are not even in the region take the time to send Jon a personal note. Also to the entire East Carter basketball team who sent a card, that was very classy:thumb: Of course there were a lot of fans from various teams around the region that sent cards and best wishes, and the various posts here on BGP. Jon had a great career in the 16th, and although it ended a little different than what I would have liked, it was a great ride. Going to be hard next year on tuesday and friday nights to find something to do. Jon's new coach at Evansville also called last night , Marty Simmons seems like he will be a great coach for Jon and seems like he will be able to energize the Evansville community around the purple aces. They are already talking about a crowd in excess of 10,000 people for the opening game next year (and thats up there in OJ's range lol). So while Jon gets ready to enter a new chapter of his life, I am sure he will do well and be fine. It remains to be seen how I will handle the change. I guess I will have to figure out where the college posters hang out, and while college may be "bigger and brighter" I'm afraid that the charm of high school basketball is behind me. Good luck to the boys at Elliot County at Rupp, they play the game the way its supposed to be played- they leave it on the floor. May have to get out next year and watch them battle it out with Rose Hill. A new era is about to begin in the 16th region. The baton has been passed God Bless

Drew is a great representative of some of the best things about High School Sports, look for Drew to have a good career at Georgetown. He has always been a winner, and I will proudly claim the distinction of being his first aau coach where we were runnerup in the state as 5th graders and he played a key role as a 4th grader! (Of course after he dumped the coaching baggage, he was able to improve to State Champ for the next 4 years lol) I bet those Tar Heels still have dreams about him:thumb:
